I was getting a lot of questions about how I am painting my terra cotta pots, so I thought I would throw together a video on how I paint them, as well as some fun pairing techniques!

There's actually a sealer for clay pots that you can buy and spray on. I do several coats letting them dry between coats. Then I paint mine using acrylic paints. I like the folk art paints best. I paint flowers and leaves on mine, sometimes a bird or something lie that. I seal them again after painting with acrylic or polyurethane sealer depending on if they will be used outside or inside. I used to sell painted flower pots in my Etsy shop.
I paint my terra cotta pots too! I add lace, ribbon, gravel, sand, recycled jewelry beads, gauze, whatever I have around! Love the whole creative process. Your pots came out great 🙌

I actually painted a bunch of my terracotta pots this summer as well. I used black chalkboard paint- so I can pencil in plant information and requirements.

I bought some off white terracotta pots that turned to golds and browns after being used and I love how they have aged. Something about the natural state of things appeal to me, and I’m learning that not all plants love terracotta even though I do.

I now know what I’m going to be doing to all terra cotta pots I buy in he future. A great idea for the cold dreary days of winter. You're such an artist! I used to do so many crafts like this, with paints, wood, and all sorts of stuff. I've honed it down now to mostly fabric related things, but I loved watching this. It reminded me of craft days with my sisters.

Is Modge Podge the best to use? 🤔
I’ve been using Krylon Cover Max paint spray/sealer for the base . Then once my creative painting is all dry, I seal that with Rustoleum 2X ultra cover semi (or gloss, or matte) to seal it all.

Can you use regular Mod Podge to seal it before and after the paint if you plan to use them indoors?? I’m trying to paint some for my sisters bday in a week but am having trouble figuring this out😅
use a lazy susan when you paint your saucers and pots therefore, you don't have to hold the item in your hand. i also use a can to elevate the object if it needs height to not touch the lazy Susan. happy painting.

Hi, this video is amazing! So helpful.
I have a quick question. I paint pots and saucers as well. I use a primer and sealer on the terracotta pot as well as the saucer. It seems some of the pots stick to my saucers and the paint comes off when I try to detach them. Why is this happening?? I leave the plates to dry fully all the time so I’m not sure what it could be!
Paint has to cure as well as dry. It could take 2 weeks - or more, if you have high humidity. Could that be the problem?
🎨 🖌 enjoyed watching, I did a few this past spring but.....I didn’t seal them and water ruined them. But I figure if I seal them first I should be able to paint over them, will that work? Also wondering if just spray painting them would work as long as they are sealed?
Also what I’ve tried on some of my outside planters, I used spackeling compound or anything that will give you some texture. You can do some really nice things with that, I’ve also used the spray on stone texture, that looks really nice if your trying to cover something up. I sprayed a pot probably 8yrs ago and it’s just now starting to chip off, but that lasted a long time I thought.🎨🖌😊
Yep, that will absolutely work. I've done that as well.
Spray paint works as well and I may have done that with the base coat but I have nowhere inside to spray and it's a smidgen chilly outside at the moment. Lol

Yes it does for sure. I still water all the way through, as we should, but the properties of the terra cotta aren't there anymore to wick the moisture away. So I just need to be extra careful and make sure I only water when they are dry.
Doing this same thing right now. I guess Winter shut in minds think alike. Anything to keep from going stir crazy as I stare out my window at my greenhouse covered with snow. 🥶❤️💚✌️🌿🌱🍃🌵🌈🎨🧽🐲🤷🏻♀️

Hi! Your pots are lovely! As well as your plants! I have a question.. a while back you talked about how much you love your grow lights! So I purchased them and ended up purchasing 2 more sets.. absolutely love them! In the same video you mentioned you have grown lights in all you fixtures as well. (It could have been another video.. dont remember) so the question is I want to put grow light bulbs in my home fixtures also! Can you suggest which one you use?

These are pretty! I don’t have the patience to do all that sealing. Have you ever used patio paint? Also, I know you have more control with a smaller brush, but I think I would use a thicker one. Again, lack of patience. I enjoy watching your videos. Thank you!

Hi from the uk. Please can you help me I have some BIG terracotta plant pots with no glaze on I am going to paint the outside of the pot but I was told to seal the inside of the pot to stop the pain pealing off when the water goes through the pot. I have been to my DIY shops and they are still scratching their heads. When the pots are finished they will be outside all the time. Please can you help me again thank you.

May 2023: Two questions. (1) If you use brand new terracotta pots, do you have to wash them first? (2) The pots that I got from the dollar store seem to have small cracks in them, especially the inside. Will the indoor/outdoor Mod Podge take care of these cracks? Thanks for the video. :)
Question: Have you ever used a spray varnish? To seal them and to finish them?

I have in the past, but usually I would use those in the spring or summer when I'm able to do that outside.
Why wouldn’t you use a bigger paint brush or a sponge brush for the mod poster application?

No, not as much. So this is definitely something you'd want to do if you don't use terra cotta for the moisture wicking properties.
I missed something. What kind of paint are you using: acrylic, oil, chalk?
Some chalk and some acrylic. 😊
Does this prevent the water from being wicked through the terracotta?
It does yes. It gets sealed and basically makes the terra cotta react the same as ceramic.

With the Mod Podge Matte are the pots sticking to each other?
Idea for part 2: A repot with me with the painted pot
The regular mod podge doesn't stick as badly, but I would definitely let them dry for a while before using them. In retrospect, and if I had of had more time, I would have liked to wait a week or so before using them.
Which would you say works better chalk paint or acrylic???
Both work well, it probably depends on what type of look you want, but I use both all the time.

Sometimes, yes. My Thai constellation for example was definitely one of them.

DID YOU PRIME THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE POT?.... AND ALSO, WE REALLY SHOULDN'T USE SOAP AND WATER BECAUSE THEY ARE SO POREOUS RIGHT? IF THEY AREN'T RINSED PROPERLY, THAT COULD BE AN ISSUE WITH PLANTS. CORRECT ME, IF I'M WRONG.❤
Isn’t there a danger of that label on the bottom that you painted over peeling off although I realise it won’t show if it does.
I wouldn't think so. It's quite covered and doesn't get touched a whole lot.

Okay, I thought the point/purpose of terracotta pots was for the way they let moisture out and keep plants from sitting in water. Since you’re sealing them, they’re just becoming a “regular” pot, correct? So, why don’t you just get a bunch of inexpensive plastic pots and paint them?
Again, no disrespect being meant - just trying to figure out why you are stopping the terracotta from doing what it’s usually meant to do.

I’ve seen another person on CZcams use a sealer for porous surfaces. It was supposed to keep it porous but prevent the paint from bubbling.

Lol I've gotten this question a lot actually. If we are using the right type of soil and the plant is getting the proper amount of light, the type of pot doesn't much matter. My soil is very airy and my plants are getting good light, so I just need to make sure my plants only get water when they are getting dry and all is well. When you think about it, we only water when the soil is dry or getting dry anyway, so these sealed pots won't really make much of a difference. If any of that made sense. Lol

Isn't sealing the inside of the terracotta pot defeats its purpose? Mostly people use it BECAUSE it can absorbed water, if needed.
Yes it does. But I've learned what my plants need at this point, so I tend to not rely as heavily on terracotta. :)

Doesn't this defeat the purpose of a terracotta pot. Do you paint all of them? Even the plants that need to dry out?
It does yes, you just need to adjust how often you water and make sure you're using proper soil. If you're using the right soil, and the plant is getting proper light, the type of pot doesn't matter. :)

I actually was able to remove some of them easily, but others were more bothersome to remove. Lol Painting over them wasn't a problem at all, and you don't really see the bottom anyway so it all worked out. :)
