      This Wyatt guy was so inspirational, I loved his spiritual narrative in the show, it was mesmerizing to watch. You two are so inspiring, Alone is my favorite show on Netflix season 10. Particularly, was fun and inspiring to watch! I am a teacher, so I was ruling for you on day one, and I cheered for you when you won!!! Thanks for the teaching!

    Love that you hung out with Wyatt. I hope he was monetarily rewarded in some way for his efforts. It really looked like he should have won the competition, but then you came out on top. Probably was the way the show was shot to provide suspense

      Great question. I was introduced slowly; I had 10 days of re-feeding and talking with small groups of people before going home. It was quite smooth, nothing too shocking. I did notice I was sensitive to noise and large groups of people for a few months.

    How many more days do you think you had in you before you would’ve had to tap? Also, how come they didn’t tell you that you won until day 66 when Wyatt tapped on day 64? Lastly, thanks for a great season to watch and congratulations!

    • @alantenta9825
      @alantenta9825  Před 15 dny

      Great question; a lot of people miss that there was an extra 2 days. The reason is they had had to get my wife up there. She arrived at base camp on day 65, but they waited until day 66 due to weather. I had 2 or 3 pieces of fish left, so at least 2 or 3 more days. After my wife told me I had won, the safety team said my good fishing spot was thick enough to walk on and fish….

    Hello, Alan. Thank you for this video and for season 10.
    My question is: As a teacher, do you have any concerns about any of the messaging that survivalism sends?
    Certainly it brings many inspiring messages, but there are other implications that concern me.
    I'm not an outdoorsman. I've watch a lot of Alone, including your season, and have a great deal of admiration for the hard work, dedication, and skills involved. I wouldn't last an hour. So in that sense, I have nothing to offer here.
    But the show is also about the human spirit, and we can all offer an opinion on that subject. And I notice that a good deal of the mentality that some of the contestants report over and again is something like "You have to push yourself, you have to prove yourself, never quit." Which itself seems to me problematic, in that it suggests that one cannot be complete just being still. That a person who isn't fighting for every inch is failing. That we are not worthy unless we catch the next fish, build the next shelter, fight off the next bear.
    This view is of course prevalent in city life as well. It all seems to me to lead to a permanent sense of dissatisfaction and negative self-judgment, rather than acceptance. For example, on season 10, the amount of despair Mikey seemed to feel for not winning is heartbreaking. And multiple contestants reported the ways that they experienced suboptimal upbringing, and have always tried to live up to someone's judgment of them. There aren't enough fish in the world to catch to make up for that feeling.
    And is there not also a risk of a glamorization or fetishization of survival itself? For a million years people managed living off the land, or died, because that was necessity. They weren't trying to test themselves. At this point in our history, few people need to attempt to fend for themselves against or within nature. Yes, that can be viewed as an opportunity, to be in nature and learn from it and test oneself. But it can also be viewed as a way of saying "Only in the woods can you be a real person." I don't think that's true. City life has its flaws but so does every experience. So what does someone who is trying to manage in difficult urban life, who watches the show, meant to think? That they ought to sell what few possessions they have and move to the North Pole, or else they are leading a meaningless existence?
    Much of the narration that the contestants provide is about poverty -- about growing up poor, about still being poor. To my mind, that is a social problem, not a survivalist one. I won't go on a soap box about what we as a society can do better, but I'm not the first to say that we need to take better care of those in need among us. And what I worry that survivalism sends as a message is the idea that if a person is poor, that's their fault, they need to get to work finding berries and snaring hares, because no one is coming to help. But is that what we as a society should be doing -- telling poor people "there's a mouse out there somewhere, go catch it, don't expect a handout?" That doesn't seem right.
    Food for thought.

      Thank you for the comment; there is a lot to digest there! I focus on the positive aspects of survivalism, but you definitely raised some interesting points!

    • @alantenta9825
      @alantenta9825  Před měsícem

      Great question. Moose would have been very difficult until it got cold; I would have stayed up for multiple days smoking the meat. If it was still hot, there is no doubt meat would be lost with only one person processing and smoking. I was hoping for a bear; it is small enough to process and smoke over several days before spoilage.
