My dad has a 2014 Patriot Latitude 4x4 and my mom has a 2013 Compass Limited 4x4. They both love them so much.
I am glad I drive a Liberty, tough little SUV. Only downside is it's a bit overweight for its size, mine clocks in around 4,300 lbs with my skid plates.
Joel M that issue has been resolved, the put a pretty beefy metal bar around the tank with a hitch on the end. I've been rear ended before with issue, the spare tire bore the brunt of the impact. I can see it being an issue if you are driving a lifted Liberty, or you don't have your spare on the back. Either way, it's been fixed.
Now put these in the new small overlap test and see what happens ha.

News flash: the Patriot failed the small overlap test.
The WK2 Grand Cherokee (passenger side) and Patriot flunked the test.
My mom was in her 2007 Liberty at a stop light when a truck hit her from behind at 60KM/H which caused her to hit the car in front of her and the car suffered very little damage. She was fine apart from a little whiplash.

The Jeep KJ Liberty/Cherokee is very strong. Also very heavy as a result. I have two of them. One with the 2.8L diesel and the other with the 3.7L V6 gas engine. I wouldn't trade the Liberty for any newer Jeep.
JeepCollector91 Doesn't feel heavy. I would get a newer Jeep but still keep the Liberty. Pulls a 4500lb trailer perfectly and has better gas mileage than anyone would have thought.
We are just concerned about the recent recall (and a news report I watched) Were the trailer hitch can poke into the gas tank and cause it to explode. Surprised ours didn't explode.

The KJ Liberty was almost 1,000-Lbs heavier than the XJ Cherokee that it replaced.
As for the recall, the hitch wasn't the problem. The exposed poly fuel tank is the problem. If you don't have the receiver hitch or the fuel tank skid plate, the fuel tank can rupture a little easier than most vehicles in a rear end collision. Usually when the vehicle that rear ends the Liberty is lower and ends up going under the rear of the Jeep and the cars damaged front end digs into the Jeeps poly fuel tank which results in the fuel pouring onto the hot engine of the car resulting in a nice big fire... And when rear ended by a large vehicle or at very high speed the fuel tank can get squeezed and rupture on impact, again resulting in fire. If that impact is severe enough to deform any of the body seams in the floor resulting in a gap, the fire can then enter the vehicle.
For the recall, they will have you bring the Jeep in so they can check if you have a hitch. If you don't then you will get one for free so it can help protect the fuel tank. You can usually find the optional fuel tank skid plate at your local U-Pull salvage yard if you want the added protection.

+MJ16Othman Older cars were very dangerous. Just because they were metal and only dented when you hit something doesn't mean you were safe. You could suffer fatal head injuries and major whiplash, plus the fact that seat belts didn't need to be worn until the 90's (or 80's or whatever) means you could go straight threw the window. Plus no airbags.
The reason why cars are mostly plastic these days are because it lessens the g's on impact.
And these new cars are safer!

Yeah, I knew the IIHS rated it Marginal because of it (and it deploying late.) I guess it is alright overall including both the NHTSA and the IIHS together. But I was primarily talking about the rear crash testing, it looks like it performs quite poorly, did it?
