- This video for Carnival of Rust by Poets of the Fall, came hotly requested! Thank you @Starlingus @kimstalfors6372 @osclhelp @iina6106 and many others!
This is such an amazing looking video! I love the stylistic choices the filmmakers made - from the carnival sets to the colors. And did they use miniatures for some of these sets?! Join us in the comments for fun discussions! We’re gentle folks around here so please play nice.
P.S. sorry for the lack of videos during the last week! I have been on set for an Amazon TV show, and I thought I could do both but two of my videos were flagged for copyright in a row (one for Knocked Loose and one for Bring Me The Horizon) and I just didn't have the time to edit new ones!

Hi - I was the DoP and also VFX sup on this one (so, double hats).
Again, an old video, and 720p was pretty much the absolute maximum we could practically do at the time. The video was actually shot on a HDV camcorder (Sony HVR-Z1 if i remember correctly), with a 35mm adapter, so even the camera original was not much better than 720p really, even if it nominally was HD - the footage was "semi-progressive", de-interlaced from 1080i.
The video was shot in a green screen studio. The ground concrete, the booth of the fortune teller, as well as the ball throw booth were actual practical sets, but everything else is CGI. Using 35 mm adapters and shallow DoF were all the hoot back then, and on this we took it to as extreme as we could, to make the set LOOK like a miniature, even if it was not. I guess we succeeded ;-)
As far as the colour goes, you were actually watching a remastered version of the video. A film student whose name unfortunately escapes me right now made his final thesis by revisiting all the VFX work we had done for the video, and spent additional time (months i think) in fixing and enhancing the admittedly sometimes a bit rough work we were able to do under the time restrictions we had.
The original colours were more on the warm, brown side, less teal. Another noteworthy change he did was the addition of some anamorphic lens flares - I'm still not 100% sure I agree with that decision ;-)
There actually was a Creative Cow magazine article about making this. It's not online anymore, so i uploaded the issue on my drive here (our interview starts at page 8): drive.google.com/file/d/1B60sArIcEje-4Y6B_qCKntofq3p5DSN7/view?usp=drive_link
Hi Halsu,
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing all of your insights and experiences, this is incredible! Thank you for sharing the article too, I would love to read it, but I can't access it - I think you need to make it available publicly. The amount of work you, Stobe and the rest of the team have put into these videos is truly awe inspiring!
@@manondereeper Thanks for your kind words - the article link should work now.
All of their videos are pieces of art adding stunning visuals to their poetic lyrics and beautiful music. What’s even more impressive I think is the fact that they’re an independent band who have been creating and financing their elaborate videos out of their own pocket for the past 20 years they’ve been around. It certainly helps that Marko, their singer, used to be a graphic designer before he formed the band and decided to become a full-time musician. They’ve also done many projects with Remedy Entertainment over the years, so they had help from knowledgeable people with expertise in creative design. There’s no making of, but I know it was directed by Tuomas Harju (Remedy Entertainment) and produced by Finnish film company Nitro FX. Btw, thank you for this great reaction, I particularly love to watch reactions by vocal coaches, lyricists, or film makers, because it’s interesting to hear their analysis. As I said, all of their official videos are worth checking out, but if you’re looking for ”creepy vibe”, I’d recommend ”My Dark Disquiet”, ”Choice Millionaire” (that one has a short making of), or their latest one ”Requiem For My Harlequin” next.
Thank you for this!! I had no idea they're independent, that's truly remarkable and good for them!
Maker of this video is actually the same guy , Stobe Harju, who has directed that Nightwish ”Noise” music video, which you were already reacting to, plus some other music videos. Also he has directed the Nightwish’s ”Imaginaerum” movie. This Poets of the fall: ”Carnival of rust” song, came out in 2006.
Considering how small country Finland is I'm not surprised there are not that many world class music video directors.
There are many great videos for poets: hearbreaking "Dancing on broken glass", wild "Daze", amazing "Requiem for harlequin" and more ❤
This is a very poetic song, and this great video won some prizes here in Finland. ⛄👍
The moon made me remember a homage to Melliet's voyage to the moon in a Smashing Pumpkins video called "Tonight, Tonight", it was so inspired by that film that live they used Melliet's film as background for this song.
Thank you for you thoughtful and warm reaction. If you are more interested about the band, there is so much to go and listen. POTF got so many good songs, like Lift, Angel, The sweet escape, Myd dark disquiet and so on... And there is also The Old Gods of Asgard, their pseudo-band that lives in the Remedy-games universe. Please start from this: Old Gods of Asgard - Herald of Darkness (Alan Wake 2 | Official Music Video). And the go on with whatever song that band has developed. You could be surprised! Poets are like... Poets. Old gods are like 70-8´s retro progressive heavy metal band. :D
If you wan't "horror" and metal, make sure to check out "Lordi". They have a lot of music videos and make their own costumes.
BTW, kids in 🇫🇮 usually start with music like "Hevisaurus", a bit different kind of childrens music. 😂
Hevisaurus - I never heard of this before but I love it!!! Amazing.
Official the "War" music video is great too, as is the "Late Goodbye", especially music vise too 🤘😊👍
Hi! Really liked ur reaction to this masterpiece. If u liked references to old movies, then ur gonna love this one: Kotiteollisuus - Kummitusjuna. It is a low budget video, but u got some famous finnish ppl in it. There is also a making of -video of it. Oh yes, and there is also a connection to Nightwish, too!
Did you read the ticket that came out of the Singer/Mannequins booth wall: Latin "Cor Cordis"
(heart, intellect/judgment, mind/soul/spirit, souls/persons (pl.), sweetheart)
At 14:48min in this vid? They sure made details, like hidden objects to find in all new views.
I missed that!
Good that you made a MV version. Live one is good too, but this video is pretty good considering how old it is.
I also love Singer's voice. He announceats word's very well. And show's techniques that he has in his repertuar.
Everyone interpretens those lyricrs in their own sences, but I think you're on the track.
If you did like this video...
The Old Gods of Asgard
is a fictional band based on same people and also have strange things happening!
;)
Maybe not visually as interesting than this, but still those videos also are interesting to watch!
Finnish Rock and Metal bands' music videos tend to be on the slow spaced side rather than fast edit ones. Here are some you might find interesting: "Kotiteollisuus - Kummitusjuna", "ORANSSI PAZUZU - Uusi teknokratia (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)", "22 Pistepirkko - This Time", "Viikate - Korutonta | English lyrics", "Viikate - Alakulotettuja Tunnelmia (video)", "SENTENCED - No One There (OFFICIAL VIDEO)", "VORNA - Tyhjyys on tyyni (official video)", "Kaunis Kuolematon - En Ole Mitään", "Kaunis Kuolematon - Tuhottu elämä", "Swallow the Sun: Don't Fall Asleep", "Shade Empire - Anti-Life Saviour (Official Music Video)", "INSOMNIUM - While We Sleep (OFFICIAL VIDEO)", "KORPIKLAANI - Henkselipoika (OFFICIAL VIDEO)", "Kaunis Kuolematon - Palava Maa", "Kotiteollisuus - Kruuna/Klaava", "Funny Finnish Hard Rock Video with English subtitles - Smartass by Kotiteollisuus", "TURMION KÄTILÖT - Sormenjälki (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)", "Shade Empire - Ruins (video edit version)", "TURISAS - Stand Up And Fight (OFFICIAL VIDEO)", "Kalmah - Blood Ran Cold (Official video)", "Kalmah - Take Me Away (Official video)", "Velcra -- Memory Loss", "MOONSORROW - Suden Tunti (OFFICIAL VIDEO)", "Before the Dawn: "Deadsong"", "Rytmihäiriö - Koska Saatana sanoo niin", "Rytmihäiriö - Spurgurituaali", "Kissa: Estonian Stallion (Official Video)", "ROTTEN SOUND - "Hollow" (Official Music Video)", "OMNIUM GATHERUM - The Unknowing (official video)", "Wolfheart - The Hunt (Official Video)", "Vorna - Yksin (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)", "Jonne - Pimeä On Oksan Taitto", "Black Royal - Pagan Saviour (Official Video)", "Verenpisara - Sinun tyyneytesi vie voiton kaikesta ", "Oranssi Pazuzu - Hypnotisoitu Viharukous (Angst)", "Wheel - Vultures (Official Video)" and "Apulanta - Zombeja! Musiikkivideo (OFFICIAL)".
There are the “making of” photos on the internet. The tarot appears in a few of their videos.
Not sure if you know. The singer in the fortune machine is also the same person in the booth.
If you want to do a deep dive to the symbolism of this excellent music video, watch "Carnival Of Rust | Song meaning and symbolism | Music video explained bit by bit" by the channel called Learn A Logic.
What I find a shame is how focused you are on the video. It's a MUSICvideo. You have not said anuthign about the music itself. And Yes I understand you are a Filmmaker, but you cannot exclude the music from this.
