A California Golden Trout would be really something. Your painting skills and eye for extreme detail would really make it spectacular. Glad to see you back at it. 👍
HE LIVES !!! I was actually worried that we would never see another Mikko Okkonen lure-making video. Since I consider each one to be a valuable gift, that was an awful thought. As always, this prototype is beautifully crafted, start to finish. And, you have provided us with more than usual detailed explanations of your techniques. Thank you for that. As for the action of the BAIT (like you I see nothing wrong with this term), I agree with you that it needs further development. And like you, I was surprised that the hinged tail didn't perform more like the paddletail on a one-piece soft-plastic swimbait. But, that's why they're called prototypes! PLEASE keep up the great work.
It’s good to have you back,Sir. The no nonsense approach to lure making you provide makes it much easier to follow along and incorporate your techniques into my own lures.
Gotta thank you Bro- I got interested in making lures 8 years ago when I first saw your videos when I was stationed in Japan. Its been a great Hobby and I still enjoy watching to see what you come up with next.
Love your videos , gives me ideas on baits to make LOL I just got done hand pouring custom plastic Paddle tail baits But mine were from a mold I made A 5" long paddle tail lure with a short length belly 2" deep I put a 1/2 oz of lead on a home made wire hook harness So I can hang a single treble hook behind the belly from the wire hook harness I put the treble hook on so I can stick a hook into the tail before the paddle tail
Teckel has the silicone tails you can put on their frogs. I bet if you mad a larger version of that, it could make the tail really pop!! Or, doing a much thinner version of the the tail you currently have. As always a great vid, I always learn a ton from watching your process!! Now to learn how to carve like you😳!! What a gift!!
SUPER GLUE & BAKING SODA! I only say this because, A: It's funny sounding, and 2. I remember you taking a light hearted shot at another lure artist by saying "super glue & baking soda is used by beginners" (or wods similar to that). I got a good laugh out if.
I actually tried it and it does not work for lure type such as this. If the tail section was not so tall i think it could work with just one hinge connection. With my lure cos of the height the tail section gets stuck so i ended up using 2 connections.
Great video, beautiful paintjob too! What happens if you would attach the tail with only one skrew with little larger eyes, giving it more freedom to move? Maybe that would give better results? And maybe make the tail a little bigger, little out of proportion. And make the tail a little flatter so it gives more resistance in the water. Would love to see you work more on this kind of lure. I like the idea!
I did think about it. I think because the tail floats it would not work well in a single screweye connection cos it wants to move up when the lure is sinking.
@@SolarfallBaits Aah true, you could put some weight in the tip of the tail to drag it down a little and force it to take on the water resistance, this will also force it a little in place but it would have more room to "dance" ?
@@lureblanks that could work i initially thought about making a semi rigid tail but then i figured wooden one would be more interesting for me personally since i never tried one before
15 hours? It would take me 15 days…per side. It’s remarkable looking. I can give you a hint about the tail because I have done similar. Don’t go straight up and down. Tilt it some. When you see the soft plastics the tail hangs down like you have it, but when they start running the tail goes out on an angle…..almost to horizontal. You need to reproduce the running angle. Check out the commercially available Rapala Weedless Shad. It’s a hard bait like this….used for pike.
I've recently bought a book on fish of the Okavango delta (Botswana). Even though I love fishing, I enjoy the beauty of these creations in its own right. Keen to make lures of those Okavango species (many threatened). How about making lures of species that are endangered?
@@BrownBaitCo i think my issue was that the tail section i did, the cut the body was still too high so the tail wanted to just lift up and bind into the body and also the fact that tail portion was floating probably didnt help.
Yeah to be honest i wasn't 100% satisfied with action. So i was happy to learn That modification i chose to make for the patreon video improved the action quite a bit from what it was here.
What should i make next?
A crawler style bait with your style would be really cool to see.
A California Golden Trout would be really something. Your painting skills and eye for extreme detail would really make it spectacular. Glad to see you back at it. 👍
smallest bait you can make
I think another salvage fly like the surfboard you did a while back would be badass
or a boat as a lure, so the fish eating it is a monster
Don't go away again! We need a friendly comp between you and Marling! This could totally get you guys a million subs!
The soundtrack for that would be interesting.
No competition, Nates great but Mikko is on another level. 🤘🏻

It's not about who is better. Both are amazing artists / bait makers that have their own techniques. Mad respect to both.
They should make the same bait in their own style. It would be so cool to see how they reach the same goal

Beautiful bait as always. This is the inspiration I needed to start my next build. Looking forward to some more content from you!
Good to see you back man!
Great work, yet again. Thank you for persisting in sharing your passion and beautiful work. Inspirational stuff.
Man your work is great!
Welcome back, love seeing the process of hand making lures and how they turn out at rhe end. A sanding wand or pen
Great video Mikko. I always enjoy seeing what you come up with next. Keep up the good work my friend.
Just made a mullet a few months ago with this exact concept, good to see I’m not completely simple 👍
cool build! love your videos you are SUPER talented!

Very nice. Try using only one screw eye for the tail joint. This will give you what you want. This is how the Japanese lure makers do it.

@@SolarfallBaits Ok. I should have figured on you trying different things before reaching this design.
Always interesting...maybe the lure action/tail would have more action if the wood was less dense... maybe cedar instead of maple.
Great detail !!!

you just need to put one pivot screws connecting the tail that will give it more freedom to move up a little
