    Those friggin Ti DTS chips. The biggest plague in the Onkyo AV receivers' HDMI boards and many still believe it's the BGA soldering. Nope, it's the chip itself.

    • @peppino5413
      @peppino5413 Před 2 lety +3

      You are so correct. TI had a manufacturing plant that got flooded due to bad weather, however production continued with contaminated chip manufacturing process. Some of those DTS/ HDMI PCB's are NLA too so BGA / SMD reflow process may be the only option, then fit heatsinks and fans like I did.

    I'll either have to leave it on or get rid of it and start the research of finding a similar style amp without these issues.

    I ask about a clock Crystal as I had a Denon recently, stuck in over current mode no shorts on the amplifier though. The DSP Ic pretty similar part to this one had some weird readings on its local Mlccs, when heated at 440 the Ic would work and the amp would turn on. I decided to heat the whole local area and narrowed it down to a 22mhz clock Crystal near by, when heated would work when cooled it would die. Replaced it and the amp lives have a check around before writing it off.

    I have two RX-A830's one has the same issue. The other has been going strong since new.
    It's definitely a IC issue not a BGA issue etc,
    The only fix is a new chip. I did manage to get the software online. To programme it through USB. But getting the chip isn't easy. A authorized dealer near me has them. But refuses to sell to public.
    These will be the last Yamaha receivers I'll own. And I'll be avoiding those DSP chips.
    We ended up pulling them off the shelf at work. We just had so much comebacks. And the repair was a replacement board which conveniently stopped being available after the warrantees expired.

    Hi bro, had the same problem with an Onkyo from 2011, I poured flux around the chip and blowed some hot air till flux boiled. I throughly cleaned up and added a thermal aluminum to dissipate heat, plus a fan connected to the +12V rail… still works fine. Other than that, sue Texas Instruments 🤣

      Awesome.There were a large amount of faulty DTS chips made by TI..... I did the same thing except I have a thermal conductive silicone pad from a computer fitted to the DTS chip PCB underside and then used neutral cure high strength RTV sealant to secure the heat-sink on the edges to the PCB. I have added four 12V DC brush-less fans powered by external 12V power supply to the top of the amp so the suck hot air out all the time while amp is powered on. Oversized high mass copper / Aluminium heatsink on top of DTS chip also !! Grazie, e Salute. Giuseppe.

    It's such a large package and i wonder if the (significant) thermal expansion/contraction cycles of a typical class ab receiver get mechanically amplified through the large area chip package, and eventually stress fracture the die (or its pin wire bindings) .

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  Před 2 lety +3

      This IC does have a thermal pad on the bottom approximately 3/4 in square that is soldered to the board for heat dissipation, Obviously it was not enough. Possibly a finned heat on the top would help if it has not failed already.

    • @yeliab814
      @yeliab814 Před 2 lety +2

      @@norcal715 makes sense .
      the soldered pad probably further contributes to an overly rigid situation: a giant square of chip encasing epoxy that has thermal expansion 2to3 times that of the copper pad and the pcb, and 4 to 5 times that of the silicon die . years of baking hot cycles eventually take their toll

    Check the DAC i believe the older ones used the DAC to split / create all the channels to the surround inputs on the amp section. the dsp may only do the effects and give one digital out and one regular direct output however the dsp may have something to do with activating the speaker protection relays, unless it's the processor that controls those, i'm not sure on that one and also check the clock signal with a scope if possible, some suggest changing the crystal. Check small caps around the IC's

    I’ve been noticing a similar, but slightly different issue with my RX-V385 that I bought a little under a year ago. For the past month or so that whenever I play a Blu-Ray through my Marantz UD5007 the movie will start with what sounds like crystal clear music and sound effects, but once people begin to speak it sounds like their mouths are covered with a wrestling mat, muffled to the point of near nothingness. This issue seems to be rectified by simply “opening up” the sound a bit, basically pumping the volume up until the bubble pops and you can hear everything just fine. Is there any way to correct this issue without resorting to this kind of cheap hack that I do? FWIW it’s only seemed to occur in the time since I’ve added an RCA cable to the back of the Marantz for AV usage, but I’m always watching a Blu-Ray on HDMI1 so i’m not sure if that’s material in this equation or not.

      you can take some 2mm or 3mm copper wire and form it into a square that covers the pins of the ic. Then use one or two soldering irons after adding solder all along the wire and legs, the heat travels around the wire and the ic should come loose after around 30 seconds at 400C. 2 irons will help to melt all 4 sides quicker if you are careful.

      Yes I’m having this exact problem, I have a V385 yahama and it’s been doing this for about a month. It’s only really happening with my HDMI1 blu-ray connection. I’ll throw a movie on and all the music/sound effects will sound fine but voices are impossible to make out. Swapping sound programs works as well as my trick which is just to pump the volume up until the bubble bursts and you hear everything. I’d like to have a more direct fix for this, but I can’t find anything about it online. All the connections to my speakers are fine (I’ve had that issue before).
