Transport is one of the toughest possible sectors to be in, the amount of regulation can be overwhelming. It’s good that you have such enthusiasm for life, you’re going to need every ounce of it. Don’t keep too many eggs in one basket. Try to find a niche. Understand the accounting and watch your cash flow / overheads. Don’t undersell yourself just to get work, anyone can be a busy fool (many are). You can’t compete on price with larger operators, so don’t try to - you don’t need to. Don’t restrict your pricing just to a mileage rate, look at all the variables. Be reliable. Good customers recognise and value it, more than paint jobs. I think you already know that you’re starting on a shoe string budget, £10k for diesel might get you rolling but you’ll be burning through more than that in no time at all. The numbers will get bigger, so can the risks. Be careful. Think about work life balance. Oh, and if your partner has just done the TM course without any background knowledge at all she already deserves a medal and will be doing incredibly well to pass (ten out of ten for even trying).

Yep its not an easy game to get started in. But ignore all of the negative feedback. Because you can make a reasonable living if you do your research. And you seem to have done that. The only thing I would say is do not spend money on things that will not make you money. So the truck is the most important part of the journey. keep it well maintained. But the one thing I would not have done is have such an expensive paint job done. It does not earn you a penny more, and could have waited until you had money coming in. I also for the first year of operation only paid myself the minimum amount. As the rest went into the business. But you have a good attitude so just get dug in and work like hell until you have recovered some of the initial outlay. Best of luck I really mean that, it take's guts and determination to go it alone...

You also need a clean driving licence we'll be four you even purchase a hgv Truck and trailer and you must have a medical to make sure you are well enough to become a hgv driver and you need to remember about the fuel and CB radio cost and CB Ariel and your own business name stickers cost cost of a new bed mattress for your truck and a new. Fridge and freezer new taco machine and cards over night heaters and a bedroom light to read and storage cupboards which you can get from truck scrap yards from trucks that are due to be scrapped you can ask the hgv scrap yards if you can purchase parts off old Hgv trucks it is well worth doing its helping to recycle old storage cupboards and you some times can purchase replacement hgv mirrors if your truck has broken mirrors or broken seats and you can even purchase the fridge and freezer from old trucks and you can some times purchase the water radiators if you need them and you can even purchase truck bumpers if your bumpers are broken or missing and you must make sure your registration details for your first truck are right and in your own name you can even purchase some Suzie's for your truck and trailers and you must make sure you have spare ratchet straps and that your trailer lights work and your trailer curtains are in excellent condition or you can get sore curtains for your trailer from other trucks in the scrap yard as long as you have got the tools and permission

The company l drive for treat me like a king l have no problems with any of the business bosses as l am really a self employed driver while l am away in the truck l know that my bosses can see me on the icer tracker but l don't care they know that l all ways get to my collection point and get loaded and get my paper work signed and l close my curtains and l strap them down and l don't let my trailer curtains wave in the wind you must all ways tie your curtains up really tight so they don't move and you must make sure your king pin is all ways fastened at night and you must check that your curtains are not broken or been slashed and you must make sure that no migrants have broken into your trailer or hiding in your trailer if you are due to go on a ferry other wise you will get stopped and punished big time by border agency and by the police and by the hgv licence team l work for the red and green trucks from crick in the west midlands Eddie STOBARTS WE ARE ALL WAYS SHOUTING OUT FOR DRIVERS
