Cyrus Chestnut dazzles with his rendition of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. The only problem is you don't want it to end. Recorded at Pwop Studios in New London, CT December 19, 2008
Yep - My son and I just saw Cyrus here in STL together with Billy Williams on drums, John Faddis on trumpet, and the lovely Ms. Linda Oh on bass. Wow....just, wow. They played two nights at J.A.T.B. on Washington, as well as several high schools. John gave a quick lesson to my son on trumpet. Not only brilliant musicians, but just fantastic ambassadors, role models, and teachers to our young people. They are definitely "passing it forward." Thanks Cyrus, John, Billy, and Linda !
The word "ambassador" definitely defines Cyrus and his friends. His piano playing is a major influence on my brother, Jay. He's completely schooled in jazz, but he knows how to groove! Cyrus is da man.
your arrangement is the defenition of "less is more" love how your playing has such tasteful restraint and leaves room to breathe. grooves so hard and you make it feel effortless.
I agree, Cyrus is a major talent worthy of any discerning pair of ears out there. I searched for his version of "The Christmas Song" which is hands down the best I have ever heard. Merry Christmas Cyrus and to everyone in range as well.
First stumbled on his album version (from the album Soul Food, I think) when it was played on Jazz FM here in London UK (in 2001) during what used to be called 'Dinner Jazz', which used to come on the radio (yes back when a lot more people used to listen to radio) at weekday evenings between 7 and 10pm if I remember right; they used to play mainly solo, duo or trio jazz tunes; pretty much all ballads and slow tempo tunes during those three hours; gorgeous mouth watering tunes. I discovered so many great musicians through that station. On that evening when I heard Swing Low Sweet Chariot start over the radio, I didn't even know what it was, but the first few chords grabbed my attention immediately, so I dashed for an empty cassette as soon as I heard the start frantically trying to press the record button on my cassette player which was also a radio, and I got all but the first 20 seconds maybe; I was mesmerized by that tune. I spent several weeks trying to learn it note for note, painstakingly rewinding that cassette and listening through my headphones over and over and over again for every note I could get; and by the time I finally had it down reasonably well I was over the moon. I played it many times over the next 10 years; Haven't really played it since 2011 so it's disappeared from my muscle memory (as they like to call it). For those thinking this version is a bit 'too jazzy' you might like the album version; he is much more laid back and sensitive in that version; you can find it on CZcams as well. It amazes me that 20 years ago I didn't even have access to a thing called internet and spent most of my evenings listening to the radio, keeping an open ear for beautiful ballad solo, duo and trio tunes that I could get mesmerized over and attempt to learn. I kind of miss those evenings.
Un grand merci pour votre couleur musicale. Vos accords sont superbes. Thank you so much for your musical color. Your chords are wonderful. vielen Dank für Ihre musikalische Farbe. Ihre Arrangements sind schön.

Cyrus is a monster piano player this a beautiful arrangement
It´s really amazing. Although being a soloist myself, I´ve never heard such a great version of "Swing Low" before!
Perfect intro for today's England Wales rugby match...

I'm working up an arrangement for my church and enjoyed studying this version, thanks for posting!
Pure class. One of my favorite piano sounds.

Yes, it is a little jazzy, that's why I just love it. It's great!
This is fantastic. Oscar Peterson would have loved this version (but added 10,000 notes to it!)
Wow wonderful version
