This video clip shows his childhood friend talking about his pain to the Abay (Nile) because she said she did not know him when she returned from abroad and she inherited Western culture and hated her country's (Ethiopian) culture.
    key words
    - "ማዕተብ"/maeteb is a cross around the neck according to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.
    - The Abay is known in the world as the Nile. (It is known that the Nile originated from Lake Tana in Ethiopia.)
abraham belayneh was last year's winner of the Afrima Music Award by this music.

The area is in Amhara region, the water fall is Abay waterfall where the nile originates from. The story is about a girl that was raised with him the rural area , his childhood friend and first love that left to the city Addis and came back different. He was excited to see her back, but when she returned she didn’t know who he was and even forgot his name. He is singing about their past and how it is killing him to see her forget him and the promises they made to each other, when they were young, most importantly to see her forget her tradition and the simple and beautiful way of being in the countryside. Throughout the story you see her changing back to the old girl that she was. The end of the story she starts remembering her past, their past but no clear indication of whether they’re back together. The entire song has a lot of riddles and sayings used in our tradition. The stick is usually used by shepherds and farmers in the region to help them walk as the paths can be steep it helps you keep your balance they also sometimes use it to, heard sheep. The word “Aye” is almost equivalent to "oh no” a sigh of disappointment, if you hear people say aye it is never a good thing as it shows disappointment or sometimes if you say it short it can also mean no. The entire village are sighing in agreement with his disappointment and the sad narration of their story.

Hi guys I really appreciate what you are doing, loved it. To answer Sally's question ''what is the stick for''? It's a Ethiopia's rural men tradition to hold such thing. Young children use it to shepherd their cattle, adults supporting themselves for a long distance walking and sometimes for self defence if they encounter any danger.

The story is like, there was this girl with whom he (the singer) grew up with playing and all in the country side. At some point she left the country side, became a town girl. After long time she happened to come back to the countryside to visit..., and as soon as he (the singer, her childhood friend and may be lover) sees her and tried to greet her she sort of shrugged him off in contempt, even pretended she forgot his name... something like that. There are many other things going on in the clip, symbolizing identity, tradition, culture etc, in that specific rural area....So, in the song, the poor singer, who is still a shepherd, is expressing his disappointment how his old friend and lover forgets him, not just that, how she abandoned her neck-band (he noticed that), which is a sign of Christianity (Orthodox), in a way her identity. The whole music is metaphorical for people trying to change their identity. The ostinato "...Aayii..." is a sound of disappointment or frustration in Amharic and many other Ethiopian languages.

That stick u mentioned is like a must have accessory for people that live in rural parts of Ethiopia (Geter, we call it), its used for gathering the heard, for u to lean on whenever, a handy weapon to use incase of a fight.... its for almost everything there.
The "Ayy" part they say, its meant to express their sadness to what happened in this scenario, Like for this story on how she forgot her roots and her promise of love to him.
And lastly the whole song is about how he is telling Abay, the Nile (that beautiful waterfall) on how the girl he loved and waited on became a new person that have forgotten her roots, culture, religion (A the othodox , the love she once promised him so on... ( if only u understood amharic and how beautiful the words of this song is crafted. Its just amazing!) All in all his expressing his sadness on the love he waited on for so long came back to be a person that has forgotten her promise of love to him.
