Rap doesn't need to speak about drugs, sex, girls or even weapons and dance parties, Rap is a message, Rap is inspirational! Rap is Macklemore!

Shame that Macklemore hit it big on Thrift Shop rather than the songs that he was the most passionate about. Don't get me wrong, I love Macklemore, I just wish he got recognition for the songs he cared about like this one.

Its because he's unique. You need to be part of the bullshit mainstream to get anywhere these days. As you say he's so passionate about his songs. I personally think he's one of the best.

Totally agree, but again he's from the north west. His views were already different to the rest of the country at the time. He kept marching on to the beat of his own drum though. so lets hope for the best.

Shag Swag To be honest I don't really care if he writes them or not. What matters is he's making songs where he expresses himself, songs that matter more to him. I like but can't appreciate his songs like Thrift Shop but I love his songs like Otherside, Hold Your Head Up, Jimmy Iovine, Neon Cathedral...the songs which actually have a message that means something to him, not just something that sounds nice and you can party to.

My parents were divorced. I'd get three weeks at dad's house in the U district. My grandpa dutch visited for one week that summer, so my dad could keep my brother and I an extra week after work vacation was up . I was 8. We watched every Mariner game together Dutch and I . Dave Niehaus's called the wonder magic unfolding before me, ballgame included. Grandpa would say...."its the 7th, get us a couple more beers! " Of course i'd have a rainier for him and rootbeer for me. We had just 3 of those summers before he passed. Every time I heard Dave Niehaus's voice I'd think of Grandpa Dutch's voice , smile and brilliant blue shiny eyes with a crinkle at the corners. I will truly miss you dave, more than you'll ever know. Love you grandpa.

I’m 39 and grew up living this EXACT childhood in Seattle. When I first heard this song, I cried thinking about how many good memories I have playing baseball with my dad. When I hear this song now, I cry thinking about how many good memories I’m making playing baseball every day with my 6 year old son.
Now we just need a decent Mariners team to rally behind. We love them anyways, but come on M’s!

My name is actually Griffey. I was named after, of course, the baseball player. When my mom was pregnant with me, my dad bet that if Junior got a homerun, they'd name me Griffey, since he was my dads favorite player. My mom accepted, and hey what do ya know he got a home run. I'm only 15 now, and my mom sadly passed away a few years ago in '10 so this song which is sort of a goodbye for Niehaus, I like to consider a goodbye to my mom

I have so many memories in the Kingdome. Numerous Mariners games and Seahawks games. Even had the pleasure of catching a few Sonics games back in the early 80s when Jack Sikma was still there.
My biggest memory was playing for the state championship in football December 5, 1987. Tumwater vs. West Valley Yakima. They were #1 and we weren’t even ranked. We won 21-14. Will never forget that day. Sure miss the Kingdome. And miss Dave Niehaus. RIP 🙏

Know I'm late on commenting on this, but had to add my piece. Coming from someone who's not that big a baseball fan, for some reason the A's and Mariner's have always had a special place in my heart. It started with my love for Griffey Jr's game, then extended to Ichiro. After watching the Griffey long enough I started picking up on the announcer, Niehaus finally selling himself to me with the line "Break out the rye bread and mustard this time grandma, it's grand salami time!", I was suddenly hooked to watching Mariner baseball.
The joy and sincerity in this song is great and I believe does justice to a man who manage to transcend not only the M's, not only Seattle, but the sports world itself, right up to when God waved him in. RIP Niehaus, much love from Cali, and thank you Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for this little reminder of Seattle's own little piece of heaven.

I was at games 3 and 4, both friggin incredible games, but my favorite memory was flying down my stairs and bolting through my front door flailing and screaming when Edgar hit that double and suddenly having a moment when I could hear people in the distance all around me doing the same thing. I'll never forget that! Amazing how a fleeting moment of pure joy can bring up such emotions after all these years. I only wish Dave could be here for this moment as well. In my mind there is nothing harder than hitting a baseball, you have a 30 something inch long bat that at the barrel is around 2 inches wide and you need to hit a ball that's 9 inches in diameter, all while you have about 0.4 seconds to react to it. And baseball is designed for you to fail, you are one person and you need to beat 9 others to reach base, I love baseball because it's the only sport when you can fail 7 out of 10 times and be considered great and don't forget, 1 swing of a bat can change everything. Thank you Macklemore for bringing us into your childhood and shedding light on how amazing baseball is, and thank you to anyone who took the time to read this

Dave Niehaus was an amazing sportscaster. As a child I would listen to him announce the Mariner games on TV till I had to go to bed. In the summers it would still be light out around 9 PM but I would stay up listening to Dave on my radio while fighting the urge to fall asleep. I grew up with the Mariners my whole life and Griffey was my idol. I even mimicked him, played centerfield, wore number 24, taught myself to bat left-handed (I am a natural righty), and tried perfecting his batting stance and amazing swing.
This video gives me goosebumps. Thinking of the '95 season STILL gives me goosebumps. It was an epic year for Seattle and something I will remember and be proud of my entire life. It's so bittersweet watching this video as a Yankee fan. That loss utterly destroyed me as a 12 year old boy. It felt so brutally twistedly painfully unfair that they could possibly blow that 2-0 lead and that Don Mattingly's career had to end like that. I wanted to run to that pile and punch that stupid smile off Griffey's face. (Of course, what good would that have done?) Hadn't they just removed all doubt about who would win the series just a few nights earlier on Leyritz's home run in the rain in the 15th inning?
Here you see how that same moment meant so much to Macklemore, what it meant to their city, how it saved baseball there. I kind of already knew this inherently. But you kind of have to see it memorialized in art form to really appreciate it. Our loss is their gain, and sometimes the gain of the whole sport. It's a part of what makes sports great. Great video Mack.

God bless baseball so cool to see a hip hop song about it. It really is the best sport of all. There is no time limit. It challenges what a human can possibly do with a stick and his body, against what another human can possibly do tossing a ball. It was designed to break your heart, and yet time and time again their are insane victories by the underdog. There is no sport in the world like baseball, and it's so emotional. So in-precise. They measure everything in baseball by numbers and complicated math these days and still the unpredictable and impossible happens. A game of heroes, a game of villains. A game of redemption and regret. The national "pastime" and yet a game where time seems to stop during those wonderful moments you will remember forever. It's a game of contradictions and timeless truths. It's a beautiful game. Long live hip hop, and long live baseball.

This song is my personal anthem. I hate baseball. But this song entirely captures, how I feel about my home town, where I still live, work and raise a family. I work in first response, the overlapping memories of my childhood, my children’s childhood and the historic natural disasters that I have played a small part in is overwhelming to me at times.
This song is medicine. Work hard and be proud of where you are from and then where you are from, is worth working hard for and being proud of.

Isn't he the best rapper ever? I mean i don't usually listen to rap music, but he really does have sth to say, great messages. Not violence, hate or sex. It's refreshing

When I first heard this song the day it came out, I wept. Dave Niehaus was my hero and the reason why I am pursuing a career in sports broadcasting. I was one year old when '95 happened. Baseball is how I identify myself. This is my favorite song for so many reasons. This song quite literally moved me and changed my life. I still get teary eyed whenever this song comes up. R.I.P Dave and thank you Macklemore for giving me this song that helped me get through the death of my hero.
