John Leyton Interview - The Great Escape

- Back in September, Sam Drayson Le Tissier and I got to take a very special trip to Austria. We had been invited by the lovely people at Triumph to witness for ourselves a recreation of one of the greatest moments in movie history as Guy Martin attempts to jump not one but both fences made famous by the legendary Steve McQueen in The Great Escape.
During our trip we were lucky enough to meet John Leyton who starred in The Great Escape as Willie 'Tunnel King'. Now 84, he still remembers shooting the movie like it was yesterday. We had a wonderful sit down chat with him which you can see below. He recounted how after filming was done, he was taught by Steve McQueen himself how to ride a motorbike and even completed the jump over the smaller of the two fences. It was a huge privilege to chat with him about his amazing memories of the movie and what it was like to return to the iconic location that he spent 6 months filming.
We had the most amazing day in Austria. Thanks so much to Triumph for inviting us along, to North West One for putting together such an iconic event.
Tune in to Guy Martin's Great Escape on Channel 4 Sunday 8th Dec at 9pm.

Great to see John Leyton again who is now 86, besides him & David McCallum 89, William Russell Enoch is still alive & acting at 97, soon to be 98 on the 19th November. Happy Birthday Russell.
I grew up in the sixties and lived in Great Holland near Frinton on Sea. My parents were friends with Tony Leyton, John's brother, and his wife Joan. I was also friends with John's nephew, David, aka "Diggi". He told me some interesting anecdotes about his uncle's film roles. ☺
Great interview, The Great Escape is my all time favorite movie of all time. Love James Garner, Steve Mc Queen, Charles Bronson, so many other great stars at the time. They don't make films like this anymore !
Great to see someone that not only survived the plot of a movie I've seen so many times, but the many decades since.
I met John in a doctors surgery in Suffolk where he lives now , lovely chap we spoke about The Great Escape, and Von Ryan’s Express , then he was called in to see the Doctor, charming chap .
Where does he live in Suffolk?
@@marcuslilley8491He seems to be back in Frinton now. He's been spotted.
Great interview. Thank you. John Leyton sang the 'Great Escape March' and he also did it in german. 😊👍
David mccallum passed away yesterday leaving John leyton the last remaining cast member of the great escape
What a nice man, great interview
John's looking great. Sounds like a lovely modest man.
So nice to see John Leyton doing well . Yes only him and David M left
My whole family has saw the film and it's all one of our faviourites.
Yes. Great interview. WHERE is the location this was shot? It looks like the location where McQueen first pulls off and ducks behind the small barn, ready to make his last stand. That would’ve been nice to include in the video if that was indeed the precise location! Where was the interview recorded?
I have always enjoyed this movie...and your interview is AMAZING....it's so interesting to listen to the INNER-WORKINGS of the movie...thx for your interview...
That was a great interview...what an amazing story. Good to hear about the film from John Leyton first hand, and great you just let him speak without interruption. Cheers, Steve
Seen him in concert with Marty Wilde back in 2014 ...wonderful man
I also saw him with marty wild in Worthing West Sussex
Oh man, i grew up watching that Film over and over again (and still pop it in today every once in a while). Brings back memories, thanks for uploading this!!!
Lovely man , was still singing a few years back with Marty Wilde, John came from Frinton on sea in Essex.
Was a good singer
I loved the relationship he had with Charles Bronson in the movie.
Thanks for sharing this great movie it’s my favourite movie.
Happy Birthday John, Have a great day !!
isn't he a lovely man!
John Leyton is now the only one still alive. RIP David McCallum😢
What a beautiful interview.
What many younger people and Americans don't realise, is that John Leyton was very humble as he talks about working with big star's.
I expect John leyton was glad to get out of England and film abroad during 1962, because at this time he'd have been chased down the road by teenagers, his name was all over the papers, he was being heard regularly on the radio, In Britan he was at that Time a major pop Artist.
A short 10 minute promo film had been made about him in late 1961 called "The John Leyotn Touch" this was shown before a movie at cinema, a kind of short infomercial, by the end of 62 the hits had all but dried up
Wonderful interview! A real treasure. Thank you!
if i met him today i would know straight away who he was..little older but thats life hes looking good..
This guy is the last man standing of that iconic cast
Karl Otto Alberty, the german actor who arrested Richard Attenborough is still alive, so too, is David McCallum
@@benhur1959 Karl Otto Alberty died in 2015.
William Russell is still alive and recently had a cameo in Doctor Who, though he sadly has Alzheimer's at 98y.
This is fantastic...
The title of “Tunnel King” belonged to Canadian Wally Floody. In the film, Tunnel King was Charles Bronson, as Danny
Thank you for posting that.
Also with the Canadian contributions from a couple of books I have read in the past. The Scrounger was from Calgary and I believe the Surveyor was also Canadian.
Wally Floody wasn't given a credit as an advisor for the movie. He was on the set from the start with Sturgis to get it right.
To be fair, the end credits of the movie names two "tunnel kings". So officially there are two in the movie.
Great stuff!!!
Is that possibly the shed that Hilt's hid behind from the germans after propping up his Triumph against it?.....Cool to think that wooden structure would still be standing....
It is still standing!
Not the shed in the movie. Have stopped by the one in the movie a few times on trips riding through Fussen over the years. 4:09
Nice bike in it's day
Bronson was my boyfriend and I was only 10 at that time thanks for the post
What year / and when was this?
@@classic_movie_buff 1964 when I first saw the film on tv
That particular model's production run didn't start until after WW2.
Only him and William russell of the main cast left. Others like extras and crew still alive also
Please upload this film
0:50 Wow he looked really good, like german Siegfried Rauch ( Eagle has landed) godfather of Steve Mc Queens son
08:14 James Garner was Scrounger.
Cool interview sadly the man bun is a killer..lol
I agree with you completely! Stupid hair cuts make you look stupid.
