- Beyond the funds raised for cancer research, Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope left another, less visible legacy: a profound impact on the lives of the thousands who crossed paths with the courageous young runner. These people remember Terry, not from television or newspaper reports, but from personal experience. For most, it was an unforgettable meeting. For many, it was an encounter that changed their lives forever. Terry Fox Remembered is their story.
I grew up in Northern Ontario and I remember my parents bringing our family out along the Hwy one rainy Thursday morning to watch this young man with only one leg run past us ...all in an effort to raise money for cancer.
It's etched in my mind for Life because of a couple poignant reasons.
The first being this, as a dumb kid who didn't fully understand WHY we were standing out in the rain , for what felt like hours, just to see some guy to run past. And I actually remember my less than excited feelings ( before seeing Terry ) of being Cold and Bored, as my parents mingled with the other families who had gathered.
BUT .... what I will NEVER forget on that cold dreary day, is seeing Terry Fox , with his small entourage , slowly come into focus about a half mile away. Suddenly I wasn't bored.
And I remember watching him get closer and closer... as the crowd cheered louder and louder, until finally he was right there, running past with his now famous "Fox trot" , but what I will never forget is the expression on his face of both determination.... And agony.
And just like that ....he was gone. Completely vanishing over the hill he was tackling.
I remember the feeling I had, even as a child, of knowing that I had witnessed something rare. Something good.... really good.
Of course this was the only thing everybody was talking about for the next several weeks and I was always SO HAPPY that I got to see him in person. Still am.😌❤
Sadly, the other thing burned in my memory. .....is my Dad telling me months later 😢 that Terry Fox had died.
As a kid I couldn't grasp this, I had JUST seen him.?!?
But I'm sure my parents would have explained to me Why he died ....and why what he did was SO AMAZING.
THANK YOU TERRY FOX.
Your legend will never die and your sacrifice will always be one of the Greatest single acts of courage by anybody, healthy or ill.
Love ya mate..❤ 💪💪
That's one heck of a human being. A great soul.
In the world today we have a lot of "heros" who spend an awful amount of time on their knees. In Terry Fox we have a young man with only one leg who spent the remaining time he had on his feet. A true hero.
I was 8 years old when Terry passed away and deeply disturbed for about a year afterwards. Terry haunts me to this day and I love him. What really gets to me is Terry being in pain each day, yet remaining determined through stretches and stretches of lonely highways, often in unpleasant weather. He is the indomitable spirit personified, a true Canadian icon.
At school we have a terry fox fundraising link and so far we have raised four thousand dollars for cancer reserch
Nice work! Terry would be so proud, no joke!

A real hero
I was his age at the time. Superhero.
You are dumb 🤬🤬
@@Turt_and_birb Strange and meaningless comment.
I was born in 1961 and remember clearly, when I was 18, here in the UK, frequent news reports of this person who was the same age as me doing this epic run across Canada with an artificial leg.
Your unpleasant words speak volumes about your intelligence
He's truly a gem and has done a lot for cancer research and people suffering from it. ☺well done Terry fox.
Power of determination and power of one man.

I hope he is born somewhere to fulfill all his dreams and goals.....never seen anyone in my life with so much determination.....so much will power.....If only he was given a second chance to live life to the fullest...to see the change he bought about!!!

A true Canadian hero
northern ontario (HWY 69) he was just starting out on his days run, and right away facing a very steep uphill part of highway 69 just outside of the city, at that time terry was still 10 hr 47 min (1,001.2 km) away from thunder bay ontario , where having to stop just outside of thunder bay. that day vividly etched in my memory forever.
