Join me for a tour of the York Galleria in York Pennsylvania. This mall opened in 1989 and is full of pastel colors and neon lights. Its a real gem of 90's era mall design.

As a York native, thank you for shining a Ray of light on such an underappreciated town.
You're welcome!
Hell ya
This is my local mall. I've been going there all my life (I'm currently 29 years old). This place used to be full of stores, with so many food options, and crowds of people every day. Christmas was my favorite time to go here because the food court would hang these huge colored strings of lights on the ceilings, wreaths would be all over the mall, Santa was always in the center of the mall with a long line of kids waiting to have their pictures taken, etc. To me, this mall was magical. It's lost a lot of its magic over the years, but at least it has found ways to keep it going. I'm happy I came across this video. I wish you could have seen it in its prime.
Thank you so much!
Wish it was still like that. With ruby tuesdays and the water fountains. I remember when the hollister was put in and you couldn’t even walk through it would be so many ppl inside the store
This is my childhood mall! I was fortunate enough to grow up with this mall, especially after West Manchester mall closed in 2014. And I'm lucky that it's still around today. It's missing a lot of stores, including the Ruby Tuesday's, that we all loved. And the food court is sad. But I'm more than happy that it still has the same beautiful aesthetics. Sitting in the food court in the evening under the neon is an amazing experience 👌 Awesome video!
Thank you! I'm glad you were able to see such a good mall in your childhood
Oh wow west manchester mall closed?
@@jonscott4090 Yep. It was redeveloped as an outdoor mall. They turned it inside out and it's just not the same
My hometown mall as well. There was a time this place was pumping. The food court back entrance when the arcade was there. Was the this mall in its peak 99-02'
@@cuddlesthetiger-mallsnmoreI remember when Walmart closed its entrance to the West Manny. We had to go around to get in then. 😅
I live near this mall! I remember by mom taking me to Sbarros, pushing me in my stroller, and playing in Tumble Town as a kid!
tumble town was the move
Surprised to see a tour of my local mall in my recommended haha. It used to be much more full of life when I was growing up, and yeah the planter on the bottom floor used to be a fountain. We would throw coins in it as a kid. 🥰
i remember that it was always what i looked forward to when we went and my brother and i used to beg my mom for coins
I NEED to go back! I miss the old McDonald’s with the original neon sign in the food court 💔
I'm sad that I missed the McDonald's sign. This mall is such a gem and I hope you can make it out to it soon.
This is my local mall and it's so sad compared to what I remember from the mid-late 2000s and early 2010s. If only I was into '80s fashion and architecture then 😭
This was my childhood mall in the late 90s / early 2000s. I remember when it was so busy and full of life, it's hard stopping by now and seeing it basically barren.
Excellent job, Ray! When I was seven years old, this mall was my FAVORITE place in the entire world. I'm from Lancaster, so we usually went to Park City, which I always enjoyed. But traveling over the river to the fabulous York Galleria was a real treat! I loved the colorful decor, the glass elevator, and the incredible skylights. I haven't been there since Boscov's was renovated. As much as we'll all miss the retro aesthetics of that store, I'm still glad that Boscov's will still have a place in that spectacular skylit masterpiece for years to come!
I am so sad that they updated that Boscovs. But I really think this is a beautiful mall
Thanks for giving me a new appreciation for a local icon. Sometimes we take for granted the gems right under our own noses. Will have to visit it again soon to see it through your eyes.🤓🤩
Places like this are great because they're like walking into a different time!
As a 90s baby I really loved the feel and energy of this mall
I moved to York in 88 and this was the 'new' mall that we would later drive across town to shop at. It was amazing to see in it's day. I've gone back a few times to visit, it's amazing how many things stayed the same. Thank you for taking the time to post this video - you really captured the feel and vibes well :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have lived in york all my life, still do, and the memories i have of this place will always be important to me ❤
Its an amazing place.
In my 28 years of life, I've never really took in all the details of the Galleria until watching this video. The Baltimore Orioles Store was my favorite place to be, and had so many other stores like Deb's, Pac-Sun, Hollister, Aeropostale. The food court had Taco Bell, Sbarro, and the space next to the Spanish restaurant used to be McDonalds, which was never not busy. Thank you for this video, I appreciate you highlighting a childhood memory of mine
Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed it
Sad to see it so empty! I remember it ten/eleven years ago still being filled with shops and much more people
I used to live in York and went there all the time.
We would drive by the mall on the way to Lancaster back in the early 2000s and it was always packed.
Its a lovely little mall. I live about 15 mins away. It would be nice to see some fresh stores and new life in it! Keep this mall alive!!
Fun fact. When its windy you can feel the second floor move. Been that way since it was built.
Many people don’t realize this, but there was originally an enormous fountain in the center of the mall, under the giant hex sign. It only lasted about a year (maybe not even that long), before they tore it out. They removed it because it was incredibly loud. I worked in the mall and remember it well.
That's correct! I came across a picture after I published this video
I have a very vague memory here, that I'm hoping someone can corroborate. If you were around for the fountain, maybe you remember, sometime around the time the movie 'The Lawnmower Man' came out, I believe, they actually had an event where they brought in one or two of the really early VR sets. I want to say it was from the company 'Virtuality' (image of one of their units is linked below). As I recall, you got in the circular base, with a headset, and a handset controller. It was early stuff so it was REALLY janky and blocky (think like the sledgehammer music video of the 80s), but you could look 360 degrees around you, and walk around and shoot things with the controller).
As I recall, I believe they had it set up in the center of the mall, probably either near the compass area, or near the planter thing where the fountain once was. I'm guessing it would have been sometime between 93 and 97 ish, since I was born in 80, and I want to guess I was 13 or 15 at the time. I think it was about 5 or 10 bucks for as many minutes, which was about all you could stand anyway because it gave you a massive headache before long.

@@kyraeus I vaguely remember that as well. Generally, stuff like that was set up very close to where you’re thinking, but in front of the JC Penny entrance that was across from the Bon-Ton entrance. They seemed to erect a lot of stuff in that area.
This mall was so fun in the late 90s! The Baltimore Orioles store used to be Nature Company (or something close) and it had all this fun random stuff. Its also really nice to see someone admire the details the locals generally take for granted
Thank you so much from a York native
Glad you liked it!
I used to love going to this mall, always thought I'd be going here when I was a full grown teenager. Much older now and I still come and go due to family!
I am a life long resident of York Co. I saw 2 different videos featuring York, very cool. I have not been in this mall probably in 10 yrs as I live in the West end and The Galleria is in the East End.
i live not even 5 minutes away from this mall, have for the past ten years, and watching this mall become a dead zone is so sad to me
Wish we had Boscov’s down South. They always look so aesthetic ❤
Boscov's is a thriving brand, and they are still expanding, just at a slower rate. However the newer stores aren't as cool
Boscovs started in Reading, PA area. The owner put a restaurant in that Boscovs. Just like the old Kmarts used to do.
Oh man ending on the Boscov's candy counter. I instantly wanted fudge,
I've never gotten Boscov's candy, I should try it one day
@@RayOutThere it was an 80's childhood treat. I doubt it's up to the same standards now but there isn't a Boscov's near me to quality control.
As a native of York it was interesting to see someone talk about the galleria. Growing up that was my childhood mall and like other people have said it is sad to see it without many stores. When my family found out that a storage place was going in where the Bonton used to be it kinda upset us because York already has a large number of storage places and we were hoping to see something different go in.
This is the mall that I go to! It’s about 5 mins from my house. I always thought it seemed a bit run-down and in need of a face lift. After watching this video and seeing the nostalgia that people have for the 90s style designs and they way you shot the video makes me look at the mall differently. I can respect the fact that they have maintained the look for the last 30+ years and is more like a 90s mall model in a museum at this point.
Nice video. Omg the neon lights! So 80's and 90's. lol
It really is!
I truly miss Mall days, before online shopping this was the place to be and though it was crowded at times, it was always so much fun during Christmas with all the decorations
Me too!
You might want to do a video about Park City Mall in Lancaster, PA, along route 30 East ..Malls are going by the wayside, it seems
I stopped there once, I hated the layout!
This mall has NOT changed at all since it opened in 1988. Its actually still not a bad looking mall, but its definately dead compared to when I was a kid and this was the place to hang out. Except for Boscov's, it lost ALL of its anchors. Boscov's will never leave, they own their space. At least Sears and Bon-Ton have been repurposed so it will get some more life out of it.
It seems like they're doing their best to keep it alive
love this mall. used to get my haircuts at mastercuts. scrape those heavy metal green chairs across the food court floor. i still get my eye exams at the lenscrafters.
Lots of people from York go the orioles games. It was nice as you could buy/exchange tickets there as well as get team merchandise.
I live in York, and I've worked in this mall twice in my life; my first job after high school at the frozen custard place, and later in menswear at Bonton on weekends from 2015 until the chains closure in 2018.
Honestly I love that this place is still rocking it's purple and teal.
Love the shot of the mirrored ceiling over the escalators! This is a beautiful mall which I got to visit shortly after it opened. The Sears was almost as nice as the large one at King of Prussia Center.
so many friday nights at that mall...never noticed the dutch design and compass as a teenager of course. cool stuff
I remember coming here when I was a student at York College of PA!! Wild to see it's still chugging along
As many other commenters seem to be, I'm also a York native. You pointed out architectural designs that I never even noticed in all the times I've been there... It's wild that it took your CZcams video to make me appreciate the mall that I grew up going to. Granted, I was a small child during most of the time I went there, but still, thanks for doing this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
do you guys remember when they had a game stop on the top floor and an electronics boutique right under it? What was nice was if one didn't have a game they would call the other store so you didn't have to walk to the other one. Man, real customer service!
I go here all the time, I love this place
That Boscov's neon ceiling is dope!
Right!?
My old stomping grounds! I worked at the Pac Sun from '99-'04 when I was in my early 20's. I spent a lot of time hanging out there on Fri and Sat nights when I was a kid, .... it's crazy how it still looks the same. Thanks for posting this.
Glad you liked it!
I remember shopping with my mother here as a little kid and trying to walk only looking at the mirrors on the top of the ceiling in the Boscovs! Amazing to see somebody online reviewing it lol
Its a beautiful place!
Mirrors, neon and geometric designs. I _love_ that Boscov's, and I really wish these design trends would come back, far more interesting to look at than neutral carpet and off-white drywall!
Thanks for showing our mall off. In the 2000 it was where i hung out at
Head south to the mall in Towson. That mall is super alive and has that fountain you wanted.
I have been living in york for 23 years, i remember when it was alive with huge crowds flowing thru it. Sad to see it slowly dying like this. I hope things will turnaround sooner than later.
This is my hometown mall. Excellent video, so happy to see this in my recommended list. It’s tragic to me how abandoned and apocalyptic it looks. I don’t understand why the mall owners aren’t doing everything they can to keep their mall alive and thriving? If they’re rent is too high, why won’t they lower it to fill the stores again? It’s greed, pure & simple. The owners won’t change with the times until the mall is completely gone. So sad.
Used to go here when I attended York College back in the day. Place has hardly changed since 1996.
Oh man, I haven't been to this mall in years. I would go to Sears to return stuff from Lands End when that was a thing but probably haven't been in the actual mall since the early 2000s. We used to hang out here all the time as teenagers in the 90s. We got our iced coffee concoctions at Gloria Jeans, shopped for clothes at the Gap, sniffed candles at Yankee Candle, bought CDs at The Wall (I still have CDs with the Wall's lifetime music guarantee stickers on them, lol). I don't remember spending a lot of time at the food court but there used to be a Ruby Tuesday (I think) upstairs.
This mall used to be LIT!!! It’s like a ghost town now. We also had the West Manchester mall but it’s gone now
I really enjoy the mall's interior design. I like to visit here after my appointment at Dental Dreams.
another york native in the comments, phenomenal video. thank you for your help in archiving the galleria, especially the boscov's
Well documented sir. Cant believe the Orioles shop is closed
Thank you!
You helped me to appreciate the York Galleria. I never really looked at the uniqueness of it. Next time I'm there I'll take it all in. Boscovs and Marshall's are the main reason I shop there.
Yeah, its a retro gem for sure!
I helped put in the Casino there, and I was just there 2 weeks ago for the candle place and I bought sunglasses from Sunglass Hut
I'm from Maryland, but I used to be in the York/Red Lion area almost every weekend back from like '08-2016, and back in the earlier days, this would be the spot where we all would meet and find partied to go to. Those were the best days, and we adored that mall. I still go up there a couple times a month, but haven't been to the Galleria in a while. Time to go back!
I remember when this mall opened. It was the death of East Mall and West Manchester Mall. I remember cruising through the mall as a teenager for something to do….
Thanks for taking me in on a trip of nostalgia! Grew up in the area and now live down the road. Been to the gym over the years and even the casino once but haven't been back inside the mall for years. Seems 20 years ago was just yesterday when I was overseas reading emails of friends hanging out there. A lost past time.
I always used to go here when I was a kid it's my favorite
Wooow, I was so shocked to see my city's mall on here.
Is that the mall in PA where they made the Night of the Living Dead . Plus there were twenty-five other movies in this mall. I'm not sure if this is the mall or not but it looks like it is. Nice video
Thank you! You're thinking of the Monroeville Mall near Pittsburgh. They filmed the original Dawn of the Dead at that mall. I made a trip to that one and I will have a video out for it sometime in the future.
I live 3.5 miles from the Galleria. So you were pretty close. When you were in Breezewoid I'm shocked you didn't do a video of the Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike. You were so close
Great video man! I think this place is a lot better than it’s sister mall. I need to get here soon! Glad they are finding new uses for former tenants!
Thanks! I hope you can make it out here soon, Its a great mall
I very rarely shopped at this mall. I always just went to Park City in Lancaster.
I've been in this mall a million times but never noticed the neon in the cafeteria lol. Thank you for this video. York Galleria, West Manchester Mall (rip) and Cap City will always hold special places in my heart
Harrisburg East mall where Bass Pro Shops is or was is being demolished
As teens we hung out at The York Mall, before Walmart was there.
@@dianehunsberger2271, yes! Fashion Bug, Ormond’s, Spencer’s, McCrory’s, Jack’s, Bon-Ton (formerly Hothschild Kohn) in the center, fountains at either end of the mall . . . .
My two other favorite shopping places in East York were Hill’s and The York County Shopping Center. I loved Roger’s Toy Store and Rocky’s Pizza! Also, my mom used to take us to Thom McCann for shoes.
@@spitfire_2where was the York county shopping center? That where Red Lobster is?
@@jeremydedrick4054 , yes, but it looks so wildly different now compared to how it used to.
Thanks so much for showcasing my childhood mall!! I still occasionally go shopping here during the holiday season. What's crazy is that I never really noticed the amount of neon until seeing this video.
Ive worked at this mall for 15 years and I watched it slowly change and decay. Im not sure how much longer it will be around. Also the d Boscovs is being remodeled.
Great video Ray!!! I love your pizza slice and the neon lights now that architecture and yes, I get sad about the fountains too!!! 🤗🍕🏢☹️❤
This was my childhood, right in my town. I miss when it was busy and packed, it’s pretty empty now.
I grew up going to this mall❤❤❤❤
I used to go here all the time when I was younger. My parents would always hype me up by telling me and my siblings that we were going to TumbleTown, an indoor kid’s play area which I think used to be in the location you walked by on your way to Boscov. Also, with you pointing it out, I do believe that planter was a fountain if my memory serves correctly.
The Boscovs has a small room titled the auditorium that has clearance items. I have no clue of the original purpose of this room but it definitely has an entrance to the back rooms
Bro I used to hit up tumble town EVERY weekend
So I moved York in 2019 and when I got there the Arcade was a Gamestop.
Too bad the mall has been dying a slow death. I've heard the rent is sky high so stores can't afford to open in there. Park city is heading the same direction, a slow death. Not as many people as there used to be. I remember how the parking lot for both malls used to be packed full all the time
i work at the rutters in wrightsville pa, go there all the time. FYE is the only store i really see people in but the mall serves as a nice shopping outlet. just wish it wasnt so annoying to get there!
I believe what you thought was a fountain was/is a stage. They used to have entertainment sometimes in the malls around that area. I grew up in Hanover, PA just down the road and went to the Galleria all the time.
Santa Claus used to sit at that stage, and the kids of all ages loved it
It used to be a fountain many years ago, but yes the stage was for entertainment
From what I remember from my early 2000s childhood, it would be a fountain in the warmer months and then change in the colder months to just a stage and at one point, they never reopened the fountain and it has remained a stage for a long time
Wow, thanks for getting some great neon shots. It is pretty cool that the mall has a casino, hopefully that will keep shoppers coming for years to come.
I feel like this mall is doing what it can to survive
The problem with this is the casino is closed off to the mall, it’s like it’s 2 separate places. The only reason I still go is my eye Dr is there and they may not even stay
We’re I live our mall is called Mesilla valley mall built in 1981 remodel in 2006 used to be a lively mall with brown tile and fountains now it’s so boring
I hate when they do that
This is my mall!!
Hi Ray
That was great!
Thank you!
I remember when i started seeing a bunch of stores closing down, Hollister especially since i used to shop there when I was in middle school. I only really ever visit the American Eagle, Hot Topic, and Spencer's there now, and thankfully those stores seem to gather enough business
5:26
I vaguely recall that there might have been a fountain there when I was very little, but I may be thinking of a different mall in the area. For most of my life though it has always been a little platform that used to sometimes be used for advertisments but was usually empty.
Probably thinking of The York Mall
I miss the 1990's when the Galleria Mall was at its prime. But I miss the York Mall during the 70's and 80's the most. But sadly it's not even technically a Mall despite still calling it the York Mall.
Nice looking mall. I really liked the food court.
I like that the local baseball club had a store there. Normally the souvenir stores would be by the stadium. Well, they are here in the uk.
I agree, the LED's don't look as good as the og neon lights.
Cheers, buddy.🙌
Thank you!
Used to be able to get tickets to the Baltimore Orioles baseball games there. Spencers Gifts is gone too, I would imagine
One of the Baltimore Orioles birds (the mascot) worked at the store, possibly the owner.
I remember going to the food court with my dad and more than half of the seats being occupied. Now most of the seats are empty. It’s cool to see my home in my recommended regardless. I think the reason this mall isn’t completely dead is because of the casino that opened there recently. Also tumble town slapped when I was kid that place was awesome
Used to be a nice coin fountain this mall used to be great but its now just a place for elderly to walk indoors for exercise and teens to walk around texting
I've lived here my whole life and grew up in this mall. But haven't been back in ages. Thanks for making this video. I really thought the mall was in decline, even from before the 2008 recession.
Were the bronze-looking statues of a man, woman, and child still there at one of the smaller entrances?
Yes, I forgot to include them in the video
I remember this mall in its heyday ca 2003
remember when there was a coffee shop and two games stops?
You should check out the Park City Mall in Lancaster PA
It’s so odd, the York mall is always dead but the park city mall is usually very active only 10 miles away.
The whole issue with this mall is the owners are overcharging rent. I talked to some of the small store owners and they had to close due to not a lot of business and rent overcharging
If that's true, makes you wonder how a storage facility can occupy a section of the mall. Imagine high rent retail space being used by a storage rental. Just doesn't make sense how that is plausible. I know storage space rent is (in my opinion) high for customers. But I wouldn't think high enough to rent retail space for it.
cool
This mall is my childhood I grew up in York and Galleria has really gone down especially since it opened and losing the main anchors js what did it…..Bon Ton used to be there and Sears and JC Penny and it is not a dead mall yet and hopefully it doesn’t
I wouldn't call this mall dead, I would say that its adapting to the times by finding new uses for the vacant anchors
I got to this mall monthly off and on and you had to have been at this mall on a wed early am
lol haircuts there when i had enough hair lol.
havent been there in years, didnt know about casino.
bought rare ps2 games from the eb above & below.
wonder what christmas season is like there these days....
I've always said that the Galleria could be used to film movie scenes in because of the 90's decor.
