Dad killed dear yearly with his old Remington in 300 Savage well into the 1990’s when he stopped hunting. With iron sight he fire it once at a soda can behind the house a week before the season. One box of core-lokt lasted him years. Miss those days.

Lkts of the old timers considered a box of 20 to be 20 deer. And they were usually right.

Yup uncle had an old lever action .308 savage. Iron sights we went bear hunting these tools were heckling him on him using a .308 and core lock. Well a bear come inn my uncle shot him through the front teeth out the back of the head. Racked that old savage and shot one in the side of the head as he walked forward epic! Them tools shut there mouth then! He was the only one at camp with a Bear!

I had a beautiful Rem 700 BDL in .243 Win when I was a kid and it was fantastic. But nowadays there is no reason to purchase a Remington, the shell of that company is really pumping out some low quality product right now. Now, if your just talking about the action, then by all means buy a Bergara or build your own. But there are so many better options then just grabbing a Remington now a-days. We have so many good push feed rifles now it's a shame that we can't have more good Mauser action CRF rifles. I'm shooting a CZ-550 American in .270 but sadly CZ switched from CRF to push feed many years ago.

My go-to deer rifle is a Winchester Ranger chambered in 270 Win.
For those that aren't familiar with the Ranger, it was a "budget" rifle from the 1980's. It had the model 70 barrel, action and trigger but shortcuts were taken on the blueing and it had a poplar stock.
Overall, it has been an excellent hunting partner. Never a failure from the rifle. It groups my hand loads sub-moa all day long...

Fantastic video. I really have to say thank you. My whole family shoots 270. My wife 1985 ruger m77. Father in law Thompson center. Myself remington 700. We farm/live/hunt deep woods Canada this last winter was a harsher winter we've had in years so it gave me ample time buy and load all sorts of powder and bullets ( which cost a small fortune these days) long story short we all got drawn this year for something and Myself I managed to to moose after 10 years! I was scrambling to think I should go get a 300 mag of some sort for the upcoming hunts and this video and a previous video you did really brought me back down to earth reassuring Myself that the Ole 270 will always have that place in our safes. Thank you sir.

Mr GunBlue, it’s always nice to see your choice of scopes. I like the fact that you choose not to mount a Hubble Telescope on top of your rifles!
After the past two decades of Nightforce ads and every gun writer selling the virtues of shooting deer at ridiculous distances, it’s nice to see a common sense, reality check every now and again!
I know of only a handful of CZcamsrs who express the need for ethical hunting distances while the majority are pushing the newest super bullet in custom rifles, topped with overpowered scopes for the 1000yd+ shots the hunters are going to make…
    Again, it’s refreshing to see a 2.5-8x on a 270Win! Great video!

Evening, ive used the S&B 150gr on kudu last year and on gemsbuck this year works really well both distances were 250m and less and they destroy bone , hit both in bone and they really do the job, shooting out a Mauser 270, luv the weapon, use 130gr on springbuck due to long shots and less drop.Ive watched lots of your programs must say you give a lot of info talking from experience, truley enjoy your posts, way out here in South Africa, ost of the guys use everything except a 270win i use it because i think its an excellent calibre, God Bless.

Always love your comments regarding lower velocity for woodland hunting. Living in New Brunswick, Canada I realized many years ago my 3006 factory 150 created too much hydrostatic shock/blood shot damage compared to my 308 shooting 180 round nose. I always consider the slower velocity the key to less hydrostatic shock less damage. I now reload my 3006 with the lighter bullet at lower velocity for deer. Cheers from NB, love the channel

My brother (almost 80) still has my father's (long since gone) pre-64 Win 70 in .270. Shoots as well today (little over.28 MOA using my dad's original 4831 handload formulation), as it ever did. I literally laughed out loud when I saw GunBlue using the same powder in his own custom loads in the "new" Fabrique version, though our homebrew shoots quite a bit faster, AND with larger projectiles, (like the movie, some 'guns' "LIKE IT HOT!" :) I nearly spit out my coffee at the 4100 fps call out by his chrono tho LOL.

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  Před 2 lety +3

My western loads for our former Sako .270 rifles produced accuracy with velocities of 3,210 with my 24" and 3,160 with my wife's 22" using 130 grain bullets and that same jug of powder. They were compressed loads. Even my current load at 2,900 is unnecessarily fast for shots inside 200 yards, but it's a fun target round, especially with hunting grade bullets. With match grade Sierra bullets, I suspect the accuracy will be stunning, if I can ever find them.

PS: and yep, I'm from the west where shots are waaay out there or you don't get a shot, so I figured you also had some 'hotter' loads for your fine rifle in your back pocket somewhere:) In fact, your 3210fps/130 loads are even 40-50 fps. faster than my dad's :)

270 ? great caliber you'll never have to hunt to hard finding ammo . (Recent dearth hopefully was just the periodic ammo shortage )

.270's been my go-to hunting rifle since 1971 when I bought a very accurate, pristine pre-64 Super Grade M70 Fwt monte carlo from Cale's Gun Shop in Alton, IL. When the prices of rare configuration M70s went to the moon, I traded it to a CA collector for a 1954 Monte Carlo combed, standard .270 Fwt, keeping fingers crossed I hadn't traded away accuracy. I needn't have worried; if I do my part, it'll regularly put 3 shots into 5/8". I use a 2.5x8 Leupold w/Leupold dot in Conetrol mounts. From deer to antelope & elk the combination has never failed.
Coincidentally, when I got this rifle, just as FN, I glassbedded the recoil lug area & the tang. The barrel free floats except for sight upward pressure ~2" behind stock tip.

My first. 270 was a Ruger M77 it was very basic but a sweet rifle then progressed to Model 700 Remington .270 Mountain rifle used it for 30 years now I'm shooting a Tikka T3X .270 love my .270's shot my buck at 340 yards in Colorado this year and it did the trick as usual can't wait to use my 7mm-08 and 6.8 Western next

Your 130 Hornady Interlock flat base sounds like nearly the same load I used to get my first deer. Always had great success with the Hornady Interlock flat base. Sellior&Bellot ammo is great stuff. I get it whenever I see it available. For me and woods hunting I try to keep to no more than 2500fps. Just worked up a 30-06 150 Hornady flat base load that duplicates the 30-40 Krag. My shots here will never be over 100 yards, probably much closer.

I love my .270. 3 whitetails, 2 black bear and a timber wolf all one shot, all down within sight. I've used Winchester's Ballistic Silver Tip and the PowerMax bonded.

The 130Gr Hornady SST did very well for me One Buck At about 425 yards only went 50 yards on another hunt doe at about 370 yards went 75 yards .I was using 53 Grains of IMR 4350

@@jjgriffin3275 The .270 Winchester made its reputation on deer. The light 130 grain bullet has the same terrific sectional density as a 165 grain 30-06, but can be driven at least 150 fps faster, with a flatter trajectory, and far less recoil, and usually is more accurate. Anyone who says the bullets fall apart is either using the wrong bullet, or has never used one on deer. There are frangible bullets in most all caliber rifles. High speed loads should never be used for whitetail deer hunted within 200 yards.

😁 When I heard that Leupold was discontinuing the Variax 3 - 2.5x-8x, I went out and bought an extra one! I may just use that when I buy my 3rd 270 Winchester (My first two are Saco 75 and 85 Models)! I was thinking about getting a Winchester Model 70 in the Tigerwood Maple Stock (but, time will tell)! I also have a pre-64 Model 70 Featherweight, chambered in a 30-06 Springfield! I Wish I was at the range with you! 😯 Deer season is just around the corner you know! 🦌

Very nice 👍. That model 70 really shoots well. I've watched many tests like this by different guys and it seems their rifles shoot really good with some and really bad with others from sub moa to 2' to 3 " even a high quality Seiko that I saw recently had some bad groups from certain ammo. it's really impressive that yours stayed so tight through such a wide range of ammo. I think Winchester must be getting some really good barrels and just the rifle overall it's just as you put it "really done right". I'm really planning on getting a model 70 trying to decide what caliber. I like the classic 270 280 Remington 7 mm 08 and the 308 all great cartridges. All of them will serve my purpose. I may go with the classic 270. Thank you 👍
