    In November at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, PG’s Rig Rundown team got the inside guided tour of the gear that’s melted a million faces. Richard Fortus and Slash’s and Duff’s longtime techs, Adam Day and Mike “Mcbob” Mayhue, tell all.
    In 1987, Gibson enjoyed an enormous jump in sales when Guns N’ Roses released Appetite for Destruction. To show their appreciation, Gibson gave Slash this ’87 Les Paul Standard, the first of many endorsement guitars. This battered ’87 LP has been broken, burned, and abused since the first tour and remains one of Slash’s favorites.
    Duff McKagan started out with a Japanese Fender Jazz special he bought with his record advance money. That bass, now stored safely at home, served as the model for the Fender Custom Shop Duff McKagan bass models. Duff tours with several of his Fender signature basses; the primary is a mid-2000s model
    Richard Fortus tours with a large arsenal of guitars, too many to cover here, but let’s start with a few of his Gretsch guitars, including a Gretsch White Falcon and Black Falcon, both Players Edition models upgraded with Arcane pickups.

On one tour, it was a UK made Ashdown (Hayden) Celestion V30 loaded 4x12, a little while later, Ashdown took it back and put it up for sale on Reverb as B-stock. I went and bought it. It's use by Slash was officially confirmed by Ashdown and John Henry's Ltd. Great buy. :)

    Richard Fortus rocks, saw them play last year and I was blown away with his playing, perfect in the context of GnR, and his passion on stage just shows. And how awesome it is that he is so humble and knowledgeable about guitars and gear...

    I have to say that Richard explaining his guitars and setup was like seeing a kid entering a candy store.. before clicking this video, i thought that this would be the least interesting part of the video, but boy was i wrong. I have seen GNR twice here in Europe within the "not in this lifetime" tour, and his playing was on point, which had already impressed me then, but this video has definitely put him onto a new level for me. All that while he seems to be a humble and very down to earth guy.
    I might have to look around to try out some of the pedals he has mentioned.

    Richard, you are so appreciated by guys like myself who will never get enough of your tech talk and amazing guitar playing and god-like guitar tone.
    Slash is one of my favourite players on earth and it just makes GNR so much stronger with you in the band. I met you backstage back in 2006 and prayed you' would be the guy to be still standing when Axl and Slash put their stuff to rest and here you are. You were just as enthusiastic talking about gear and guitars as you are in this great interview. God bless you and I wish you every success brother!

  • @ericscottstevens
    @ericscottstevens Před 5 lety +3

    The Chris Derrig '59 replica was the unique signature sound of Slash that was never duplicated. Derrig died of cancer in 1987, some say because when he boiled his homemade recipe of lacquer over heated source for the finishes on the guitars inhaling the smoke byproduct. Twenty or so Les Paul copies were created in his short run, some have been identified and are in private ownership because they are highly coveted. More of his guitars are probably out there in existence without the owners knowing the extreme value. That Slash owned guitar along with the studio space they recorded the AfD guitar parts separately in a small booth. Taped the speaker to the floor at a certain angle not to bump it off it's mark, calculated the humidity, and used a rented Marshall amp (Slash ended up keeping and returned to the rental business by mistake).That very same Marshall rental amp was used earlier by George Lynch on Dokken studio albums.

      I mean Slash and Duff have custom made instruments, either exact copies of their 80s instruments or signatures designed by them and probably free. So technically they still have their first ones. But it’s just a cool thing that Richard can do, he doesn’t have to be “loyal” to a sound for 30+ years and he definitely exploits it.
