I met Taker and Paul Bearer when his Undertaker character was still in its infancy. I grew up in Memphis and Lawler and Co were still going strong even after WWF pretty much ended the regional territories. Vince had a deal with Lawler and Mid South Wrestling to send some big name talent down here, I could be wrong but I think it was the only deal like that. Vince didn't send talent anywhere else. Every Saturday morning at a small Memphis TV studio there was a 1.5 hour wrestling show, it was free and all you had to do was send in a stamped return envelope and they would send you 4 free tickets. The show was ran by Jerry Jarret and was story focused rather than focusing on big budget effects. It led to wrestlers putting their best out there, they had to. My uncle was a wrestler so I went to a ton of shows. Saturday mornings were wild. It was live to whi h was rare and shit went down every week. The Saturday TV show and Monday Night house show at the Coliseum were must see for decades. To get back to Taker, I saw him wrestle Sid Vicious at the Monday Night House show. It was a memorable show. I loved wrestling then, the product today is nothing compared to those years.
The Rock was atrocious on the mic. He used third person and as a crutch, constantly repeated himself as he built a corny joke and then just said a bunch of dumb shit. The audience eventually ate it up and that built his confidence. He was horrible.
