Itâs important to add that freelancing often also involves extra headaches and frustrations because when you donât work at a company, you canât fix their broken processes and they often feel like they can treat you bad because you are just a temporary worker. yellow flags in a manager are red flags in a client. You gotta be SO picky with your time and energy. Learning to walk away and leave them in their mess is hard, but it's like trying to fix a messy ex - just a waste of your time and energy.
I am a trained actress, and while in school ohr professor told us that as an actor we must be good at freelancing, because there's rare cases that an actor is guaranteed a job after each gig. And when the professor saw all of us get incredibly anxious about the idea of "not having a consistent job" she smiled and said "Freelancing can be a scary endeavor. But in truth, it means that if the working conditions are bad, if the director is being horrible to you, or any other major issue - you never have to 'endure' it - you can demand better and you can always leave. There will always be another gig, because this business is endless. Freelancing allows you to advocate for yourself and never fear losing a position or an opportunity, because you'll always know there's going to be the next one, as long as you do it right." I'd love to know how you started finding clients to work with! Did you seek them out through job listings or did you market yourself so well that they found you instead? thx!!
They are only write offs if they are legal deductions which are actual expenses directly related to the income. So if youâre deducting unrelated expenses to benefit your tax return, the IRS would like to have a word with you.
Stop being so dramatic, things like coffee, doughnuts, a comfortable office chair, no lap top, work clothes and car are all needed for work, directly for work, so that's totally fine.
They're pretty lenient... There's no need to be so stringent. They just don't want you buying luxury items and claiming it's tax deductible. There's plenty of legal things that can be deducted, and if you make a mistake it's not the end of the world. Just keep your receipts.

I am glad you mentioned the last two things. Itâs like that in Canada too that we need to manage our own healthcare and retirement plans when we freelance. But much of healthcare is covered by the province and people may be covered for other things from their spouseâs insurance if that spouse works full time. Otherwise there are individual insurance plans which are a great option for freelancers who are single and you can pause it and go back on it too.

Yes! I freelance edit regularly. Look especially for American marketing companies who hire people from the Philippines and other countries to manage the content⊠they often prefer to have American writers and editors, and often those are freelancers.
My biggest question is this: I have a film degree and I did a bunch of projects during my time. Donât forget to schedule some time off and do your budget accordingly. For example, instead of using 52 weeks to calculate- maybe you can budge 50 weeks per year, that way you automatically give yourself a two week vacation per year.
Sites like fiver and upwork. The issue is its harder to get entry level jobs into the niche so youre going to want to make a small portfolio of evidence to showcase your skills
You have to network like crazy to be honest. If you don't know a single person in your industry to at least get you one or 2 gigs it's going to be very difficult to branch out.

Hi Erin! I love your videos sm! Iâm still in school, but are very interested in this subject. Can you make an extremely long video of every single video with explaining extra money, Roth IRA, retirement, investments, stock market, and more? Thanks so much! â€
Hey! I started watching your content based off your corporate interview vids but when I found out you're an editor (LIKE ME) I got instantly intrigued. I started freelancing on UpWork every now and again and I charge a low rate because I'm young, in my first year of uni and I am only skilled in DaVinci Resolve. However I've been improving my Resolve skills and learning colour grading and sound design, and my degree (in Film and TV) has given me access to the full Adobe creative cloud, where learning Premiere is a possibility now. I wanted to know personally from you, how do you seek out jobs from companies? How do you show them your work, through a showreel or through a resume? Thanks and have a lovely day
If you're covering your own medical AND retirement AND taxes, $100k doesn't seem like very much. Feels like you'd need to make closer to $150-200k to be comfortable. Is that reasonable?
As a self employed person, you can deduct biz expenses from your taxes (and other qualifying expenses) which can save you much more. Remember that I was at $100k while only working 17 hrs/week. Imagine if it was full time!
Taxes/write offs/all the stuff-employed business stuff seems difficult to understand - video please? Plus sometimes the freelance clients can be...difficult in my experience. I think it's mostly because they don't understand the regular processes of the industry (even though my emails have outlined and explained everything).
Like can u please tell me what you do and what freelancing can get you atleast 100k and go upto 300k in future and what skills you need for that activity
Iâm definitely gonna be a freelancer one day, might have to get a normal job first though just so I can afford good quality programs and stuff (Iâm an artist)
I have many years experience in my field as a consultant, however I have a very specific job description. I work in oil and gas as a geologist and have done my own freelancing in that industry. But when oil takes a downtown I'm always left looking for where to apply my skills. I understand the hustle and bustle of freelancing but not sure how to transfer my skills to other positions.
There are a lot of big write-offs for freelancers. For example, if one of the rooms in your home is your dedicated office you can claim a % of your mortgage as a tax write-off.
iâm an esthetician and would love to own my own freelance business one day traveling in a van. could you make a video on what i would need to ensure my start up has all the safety features it might need?
I'd like to try this on a smaller scale but with photography? What could I do, it where do I start, what do I look for? I have pro level gear already and about three years experience with that gear
You forgot to pay yourself for the two vacation weeks and 7 federal holidays that most employees get. And besides incomes taxes, you have to pay both halves of social security--and there's secret way to deduct them by writeoffs. Your healthcare and average retirement funding can be killer. Also, you must have a good rep and client base! These days most corporations won't hire freelancers, they hire agency temps so the tax and labor depts. can't argue that a contractor should have been an employee. And then the writeoffs stop and the agency takes over 1/3 off the top. Great that you can make it, especially in today's market.
How do you determine what is a good thing to freelance in? I have an interesting background that could definitely turn into something freelance in multiple industries, but no idea how to label my services or which service would be appropriate for freelancing.
I have tried setting up freelancing work as I find myself skilled in relatable temporary labor, and have a decent work background, but can never land a job since the skills are not covered at my jobs, and I don't have professional experience doing the freelance work. Any tips on how to get your foot in the door with no "experience" but you know you're still good at?
Iâm a dentist from India and looking into freelancing. Do you have an idea on any medical, dental related freelancing fields? Kinda struggling here with student loans. Looked into freelance writing jobs but they arenât panning out

For example, instead of using 52 weeks to calculate- maybe you can budge 50 weeks per year, that way you automatically give yourself a two week vacation per year.

Meeting a new Client and the client's brief of the work...
Genius!
Tone of voice makes it sound so easy. Me taking notes. Wait. What?!
Definitely not easy, but totally realalistic. Will take years and yeas of work to get to her level though.
How do I get started? I get nervous trying to figure out how to get gigs and get ppl to hire me since Iâve just finished up college.
How do you cover your own healthcare and retirement plans. Any recommendations on resources?
Brilliant đ
How do you find clients? Do you send cold emails or cold call offering services ?
In the beginning cold emails, now just word of mouth. Come to my free freelancing 101 webinar! Iâll be going through that: advicewitherin.com/freelance
I would like to learn more.
Hi Erin! I love your videos sm! Iâm still in school, but are very interested in this subject. Can you make an extremely long video of every single video with explaining extra money, Roth IRA, retirement, investments, stock market, and more? Thanks so much! â€
How do you acquire your clients? Do you go through an agency?
Thanks and have a lovely day
Do you think you can begin this before you turn 18? And how much of your own money did you invest in this before you turned a profit?
Here's how freelancing ACTUALLY works: the client hires you to do something. They love the work you create for them then they never pay you.
You need to be actually part of an industry, I know multiple people making 70k-100k doing freelance.
Untrue. I freelanced for 26 years ($200 hourly rate) as a training consultant and always got paid.
@@josekirchner4040How do you pursue a career like this?
What does a video editor do and how do you go about becoming a video editor?
Most people work 40+ hours a week and donât even make that much!! Omg
I would love to learn from you. Do you have classes?
As a person that has done this plan for the rest of your time being devoted to finding that new business.
Imagine if it was full time!
thanks
Taxes/write offs/all the stuff-employed business stuff seems difficult to understand - video please? Plus sometimes the freelance clients can be...difficult in my experience. I think it's mostly because they don't understand the regular processes of the industry (even though my emails have outlined and explained everything).
I recommend chatting with a local accountant about that stuff, they might know more specifics about that sort of thing than she does
Come to my free freelancing 101 webinar! Iâll be going through that: advicewitherin.com/freelance
Like can u please tell me what you do and what freelancing can get you atleast 100k and go upto 300k in future and what skills you need for that activity
What is your favorite video editing software?
Soooo many crazy tricks, and self employment income tax is also already a little less.
iâm an esthetician and would love to own my own freelance business one day traveling in a van. could you make a video on what i would need to ensure my start up has all the safety features it might need?
I'd like to try this on a smaller scale but with photography? What could I do, it where do I start, what do I look for? I have pro level gear already and about three years experience with that gear
How do you get the first clients?
I'm an insulin dependent diabetic. I was told many years ago that I would never qualify for health insurance that wasn't employer sponsored đ
Show us how to write offs the taxes
Do you have any nudges how to attract more clients? I have one client, but itâs not enough to depend on each month.
must be nice to be smart and lucky
How do you edit videos?
Basically gig economy
Yeah, but not like uber or others that take advantage of how all that works.
How do you determine what is a good thing to freelance in? I have an interesting background that could definitely turn into something freelance in multiple industries, but no idea how to label my services or which service would be appropriate for freelancing.
What if you like, really bad at setting up these system, but you wanna be a freelancing animator/artist
What do you do for health insurance since most people get it through work?
You are smart. I like you
me wishing i had talent to do any freelancing job... where's the free training? ugh... sounds like a dream!!
Looked into freelance writing jobs but they arenât panning out
How do i start learning video editing?
What are the best ways to sell your freelance services and also how do we know what we can freelance doing for a good amount of money?
question is, where do we even start (wspecially from europe)
How did you learn that skill?
