@@carloscastrovargas2732 What other ways would you suggest then? You've learned 4-6 languages apparently, you must have an incredible source if Duolingo is so far below you. Plus he also said in the video you can get *conversational* with Duolingo, which is like A2 level. He mentions Dino Lernt Deutsch, Dark, Clozemaster, and generally immersion, TV shows, and books on top of Duolingo, which I think is more than enough to reach A2

To be fair, they didn't have the privilrge and advantage of having a lot (and by "a lot", I mean THOUSANDS OF NATIVES) of foreign-language speaking people surrounding their circles and environment.
An american learning a language that learned his/her 2nd is just as impressive, if not more impressive, than other people that learned languages naturally and didn't work for those languages that much.
I.e A Japanese that is conversationally fluent in English as his/her L2 because he/she worked for it very hard without the luxury of having of an "English environment" is more impressive than a European learning his 4th language, and that 4th language is prolly mutually intelligible and just needs a bit of tweaking

When he said "it really helped me when I went to Australia" I almost died but then he said German vloggers
There are lots of old German towns here in South Australia actually where Germans migrated to many years ago. Places like Hahndorf and Lobethal. A lot of the German towns' names were changed during the war but few have been changed back. The Barossa Valley is full of German heritage (and vineyards) and historical places like the Herbig tree, and it is a famous winemaking region with all different grape types including Riesling. We have Oktoberfest here too (it's said to be the best in Australia) and Schutzenfest (basically a beer festival), but our longstanding German Club in Adelaide closed its doors in the city recently after it sold its premises and it moved to the suburbs. We have old families here like the Henschkes which is also a winery and Wintulich's which makes mettwurst. Colin Thiele was a famous childrens' writer here and he wrote a lot about the Barossa area. We read his books in school and I met him as he presented a literary award.
Food companies like Menz are a South Australian icon, and no other state makes fritz. It is slightly different in those states and they call it devon or polony there. Also schnitzels are everywhere here: they are a pub staple and we have places where you can eat out and have a good schnitzel like Schnithouse.
I went to school with families with German surnames like Wilksch and Schwarz. I don't know how much German is still spoken here as a first or second language: my uncle learnt it at school. No-one I know got the option to learn Spanish in school. Here common options are Indonesian, Chinese, Japanese, and French. Actually I think my younger sibling learnt German in high school come to think of it.

Evan!!

My experience with Duolingo:
I am learning German, French and Japanese using this app. For both French and german, I did not complete every leason ( until it hits the "gold" color) because I already learned some german in highschool, and, since I'm a native portuguese speaker, the initial french lessons where too easy ( I was using the english version when I started, there was no portuguese version of the French course).
Its helping me a lot to write and read, and I can already read some philosophy books in German. I also use other methods outside the app, like Tandem or just writing a good old daily journal in french and german ( my grandmother told me about this method, she speaks german and french).
For japanese, or any other language with a different alphabet, I would not recomend the use of Duolingo alone. Japanese has three sets of ideograms, and Duolingo does not put the Furigana over the kanjis when you are practicing, so, you are going to get stuck at some point during the course. There are some apps that teach you how to write japanese letters, however, one is called "write-it", and the other is called "kanji study". The first I use for Katakana, and the second for kanji. Hiragana I'm learning using only Duolingo. Lingodeer has a better course of japanese than Duolingo, but you can only make half of the basic course without paying a subscription, so, I would recomend a mix of these four apps to learn without having to pay anithing. I would also recomend the Deustch Welle podcast for training german ( there is a special, slower podcast, for german learners) and ther is also some news in slow french here on youtube, on a channel called "lingua360" if I am not mistaken.

About the subtitles, I wrote subtitles for a series once as a sidejob (in German) and they actually had a maximum amount of characters I could use per fragment shown on the screen, since people seem to speak faster than you can comfortably read. So the rule was, make sure you can read the subtitles as fast as possible and you get the meaning, otherwise shorten it as much as possible.
Also, if you are learning a new language, get in contact with native speakers. Make sure that they know you are still learning and don't mind being corrected if you say something wrong. Also, dare to speak and dare to make mistakes, otherwise you won't learn.
Why Me Makes sense. I also thought subtitles are mainly for deaf/hearing impaired people, so it doesn't really matter if the sounds and subtitles match!
Exactly. Broadcasters as well as streaming services have their own subtitling best practices which usually means a max of 40 characters per line and 2-3 lines per segment. There is also a minimum standing time for subtitles, meaning short subs like "Hallo, Evan." have to be visable for at least one full second, whereas two-liners have to be visable for at least 4-5 seconds. Since German words (esp. compositions)are freakishly long and some Germans talk freakishly fast... you sometimes have to adjust the sentence structure or the wording to retain the content but reduce the number of characters. Also: A German translation of any English text is on average twice as long as the original... so... long story short: Subtitling and translating is hard af, so stop complaining Evan ;) That being said: If you've got access, German public broadcasters like ARD, ZDF and NDR are usually a save bet when it comes to good subtitles. I've subtitled for the NDR before and they usually try to keep the subtiles as close to the audio as possible.
May I ask how you got that job? Because I'm super interested!😄
I communicate with an Australian girl and it helps me a lot :) I love the English language and I got more confident since I started writing with her :) When it comes to speaking I’m a bit weird. Short videos on Snapchat are okay, but standing in front of somebody 😬
And I actually like Subtitles :D But I saw a movie which was in german (I think it was a dialect or sth like that) and the subtitles were completely different and that makes me angry even though I can understand it and speaking it fluently;) (I’m Austrian btw). I mean the subtitles were correct, but in proper/ standard german or how this is called 😂🤷🏼♀️
Thank you for sharing !
I just wanna avoid my Spanish teacher. My family and I are Honduran, so I already know Spanish. She thinks that she is better than me, and that she's gonna teach me. Her accent is wack, and her grammar is decent, at best.

Learnt German in school and remember quite a lot. Will try the app and pick up the language again 😊
8386charlie I’ve started to do the same with French as I was forced to take it for 5 years in school, but never bothered too much as I thought that speaking German (natively) and English (quite fluently) would be enough, but now I miss learning a language. I’m quite proud that I still remember a lot!
You've reignited my passion for duolingo! I'm going to go back to it and apply these newly learnt skills! Thanks Evan :D x

About the subtitle thing you talked about: That is a big part of how I learned English. My family hated dubs so they watched/made me watch every foreign show or series with Turkish subtitles. I was way ahead of my friends in English when I was a kid just because of that.
But I get that since aren't used to reading subtitles it may be hard to adjust to that. It's like second nature to me since I have been using subtitles for years.
thank you for putting captions !!! :) and for the tips!!
There's also a Netflix series called "How to Sell Drugs Online, Fast" (I think) and it's in german as well c:
Ooh, i actually watched that one. I thought it was english but it being in deutsch was a pleasant surprise!

Thanks for the tips. I literally JUST signed up for Duolingo today to learn Korean (not German I'm afraid). I'm half Korean and have always wanted to learn my mother's language so here I am trying it out! Hope I can get a Duolingo streak as high as your in the years to come. :)
rmussman1 hey I'm learning Korean toooo!
I started learning Korean recently too. I thought it would be fun! So far it is.
hey! im learning korean as well. a tip from a fellow learner, while duolingo is fantastic for a lot of languages, its not necessarily great for all of them, so keep that in mind! (and personally ive found korean is one of those, at least on its own anyway). korean is fairly new to duolingo so they havent had much time to perfect it where they have with common ones like german, spanish, etc.. if you find that duolingo korean isnt right for you, i would recommend lingodeer (app specific to asian languages, for casual learning, vocab, or reinforcement of knowledge), talk to me in korean (podcast great for grammar and explaining nuisances of the language), and memrise (app i find helpful for vocab, as you can skip to certain levels specifically for what kinds of words you want to learn). once again, this is a personal preference but i thought id share it because these resources have helped me a lot! good luck and happy learning :)
I downloaded the app quite some time ago because a friend recommended it to me, but they didn't have korean yet, so I deleted it. Glad to hear it's on there now :)
I have been learning Korean for about 2.5 years and Grammar Haja, Rieul Korean, and howtostudykorean.net are the absolute best. Good luck on your journey!
I realy appreciate this video! I had 0 expectations as I had used duolingo once but on the mobile app, but now I am convinced and will try Duolingo on desktop mode. You're right about not using English subtitles. I heard a study showed people learning a new language using subtitles in their native language had a 0% improvement in their understanding of the language, while those that listened to a show without the subtitles in their native language improved their comprehension of the new language by around 12%.
German is awesome in my humble opinion. You have many things to motivate you to learn the language and culture: an interesting historical past; great contributions to literature, psychology and philosophy; vast technological innovation in electrical engineering, automobiles etc; beer, sauerkraut and sausages; awesome folklore, including the Grimm Brothers' fairytales, which we all grew up on; intense musicians such as Rammstein and that angry rapper guy, we love meme-ing on.

Plus they got some amazing music!! Ever listened to Equilibrium? ;D

Yo so one time I commented on one of your vids "I want to learn german so bad!" And you replied "do it" so then I downloaded duolingo and now im pretty good at german! Thanks?
I've learning Spanish on Duolingo for 36 days now (I did do Spanish for a year in school) and it's going really well so far! Being able to learn a language with my phone for free is amazing. This is what I really love about the Internet. When used right, it is a tool to make education more accessible to everyone.
How's it going?
Yeah , how is it going , also do you recommend any books in Spanish to start off with, was thinking Harry Potter but now maybe not…
Umm, to the people asking, it's been kind of on and off for a while, but now I've built up an 80 day streak again, so right now it's going well. I can do Pretérito and Gerunds. Getting into Spanish social media is good, texting my Chilean friend in Spanish is good. Don't have any book recs as of yet 😅 I'm sure the first Harry Potter would be a solid choice though.
❤❤👍👍
Awesome! Keep up the good work. Subbed
thank you Evan , it has been of great help
The best thing about this video is getting to understand everything he says. My native language is Portuguese which means I had to learn English by myself and that’s a very big step for me and now I wanna learn other languages and I didn’t know how to start (weird huh? considering the fact that I’ve already learned a new language before). Harry Potter is perfect book to read for studying Foreign language. When I learned English Harry Potter was so easy to read for me! So try it out, put yourself to a challenge.
yeah that makes sense, because Harry Potter was originally written in English. Reading Harry Potter in German means reading a translation... it sure can make sense because you know the story. But it's not ideal in my opinion. It's probably better to grab an original German book for that :)
yeah, grabbing German book is always better option. I just wanted to say that is has simple language.
Another thing you can do is read a german book which you've read in translation.
I don't totally agree on the fact that it is simple language. It always depends on which vocabulary you are familiar with. We had this discussion during my time at university, when someone suggested to read children's book to learn a language and it turned out that they are not necessarily easier to read.
I believe what makes Harry Potter easy is the fact that you already know the story and can easily understand new words in context. Agreeing with what you said, it's a good idea to read a book in German that you already know.
I think Harry Potter is good if you are around B1 level. But I had B2 lvl and started to read LOTR in English. Yes, it is very complicated. I wrote down at least 15 new words per chapter. But in the end I felt more fluent. I think the best way is to read something that is suitable for your level but also has new vocabulary and phrases as well.
I also use duolingo in English which helps me learn new language and maintain my English skills.
Thank you so much for your tips on Duolingo desktop version and simply taking the free version, Evan.
I’m learning Danish on Duo and for the same pain I could’ve shot myself in the foot

I've been using duolingo to learn french for just over a month and honestly I know more french than I do Spanish or Chinese (both of which i took two years if in school) I don't know if it's that duolingo is better than what I was being taught or if I'm more involved in it but I highly recommend for a good base to learning a language
awkwardsity C’est très bien, j’ai commencé à apprendre l’Espagnol, je suis vraiment content.
I have tried to learn German but I couldn’t keep up, it is a bit hard to be honest.
awkwardsity ç’est vrail? pouvez-vous mener une conversation?
It’s involvement - people tend to reject things they were forced to learn as soon as they can stop doing it, whereas when you willingly choose to learn another language in your own time you become more involved in it and pay better attention.
been learning french for the past 3 months on duolingo and I'm really involved with it but I'm afraid of not getting as advanced in it as I am in english (that's how I ended up watching this video). I've learned english for at least 5 years of my life and even though I can tell from experience that interest is the differential, I don't know if I'm convinced that you can have a nice level on a language without classes
edit: also, it breaks my heart that I can't pronouce the "R" in french like they do :/
Das wär so cool :) Ein ganzes Video von dir auf Deutsch 😂😊 Wär echt mehr als cool :)
That was great! I didn't realize there was a desktop version.. AND that it was harder. Awesome. Loved the German grammar joke LOL. Great energy!!!!
You are so funny! Good video.
I love Duolingo, I feel like it deserves more credits. In the field of education it's a revolution.
Duolingo is good for basics well depends on the language. I would recommend to use other methods and apps to learn a language. I would try to find things that are comprehensible input for me and learn some vocab and some grammar and watch films.
Looking forward to your full video in German!
Great video You helped me so much 🙌🙌🙌🙌
I had no idea about the differences between the app and desktop versions. Thanks for making me aware of that. Checking out the desktop version right now.
I can recommend also Memrise. It's a free site where you can learn a lot of things actually, not only German and not only languages. It is structured in a similar way as Duolingo but, I think that using them both at the same time it can make you learn more words, also because after a while of using the same app I get kinda bored so in this way, switching apps, I can study more time without feeling bored at all.
Francesco Giannone are you sure it's free? I wanted to study Arabic on memrise and only the first 3 lessons(I think) was free. After that, you have to pay.
It sounds really weird to me. I've done several courses (not Arabic though) and I never paid anything, maybe it depends on the specific course. I don't really know.
Hamza Hassan really? i just got done learning swedish and i did about 5 lessons and didn’t have to pay
goth gf Jag pratar lite Svenska. Lär dig med Duolingo.
Been learning for a month now, so still at the basics, but I’m learning and having fun with it. It definately helps! Lycka till med att lära svenska!
I used Memrise to learn Russian, it was very useful for the vocabulary, although not inherently enough. It's a bit tedious because of self promoting ads, but very efficient and a bit less forgiving than Duolingo. And I never paid anything after months of using it.
