Early Genesis was such a big part of my early life. I would listen to Selling, The Lamb, Trick, Wind and Seconds Out and say to myself that this music is the most special piece of work that I will ever experience. It made me even feel special when I listened to it while my friends couldn't comprehend. That said.....Pink Floyd had another dimension. They had a battered heart and a sensitive outlook that Genesis couldn't come near. So many wonderful layers of being.
I can soooooooo relate to what you're describing. I was around 15 back in the mid-70's when I discovered Genesis, plus I was learning to play drums at that time too, so Phil's playing was so out of this world for me (and I came from a very good musical training). I think as we grow older we get less sensitive but I will never forget how when I was 15 and I'd listen to Genesis and the music would tug and tear at my heart like nothing else. The feeling I'd get from that music was so intense it would make me feel like crying.....
Seriously? Have you ever heard Genesis pre-1977? Almost every song they did was exactly what you described - keyboard/guitar solos, difficult time-signature changes, songs over 7 minutes long. Genesis are considered to be one of the flagship bands of early 70s prog-rock (along with Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, and ELP), while it's debatable that Floyd should even be considered prog-rock at all. I love Floyd, but they weren't nearly as progressive as Genesis were in their heyday.
You, sir, understand the formula that was early Genesis. When Duke arrived, it's like they threw away that tried and tested formula for success and traded it in for commercialism.
Jez I AM ever heard turn it on again? classic genesis masked with pop. You need to understand genesis didnt sell out, they evolved. Phil became a much stronger songwriter and tony didn’t want to write the same songs over and over again lol
@@Jez2008UK You've clearly not listened to much of their post ATTW3 stuff. If you think that they completely abandoned their former self, just listen to tracks like 'Dodo/Lurker', 'Heathaze', 'Domino', 'Driving the Last Spike' and 'Fading Lights'.
No band could ever top Genesis in my book. I've been listening to them my whole life, since I was a toddler singing Tonight Tonight Tonight, the best song on THAT album mind you. Land of Confusion is probably their worst song, ever. Either that or Keep it Dark, it's a toss up. Then I went back and dug up the old artifacts that impressed and amazed me even more. No band has ever come closer to my heart. But to be fair Floyd's Delicate Sound of Thunder could be their Seconds Out.
Land of Confusion is great! Got me into Genesis at a young age. Tonight, Tonight, Tonight was good too, but the Domino suite is the center piece of the album.
What can I say? Please no war between Genesis and Floyd fans. The Music of both bands was so good. We and our children will never again enjoy such Music. We had the best Music since Mozart, Bach, Beethoven....And all is Music (Mr. John Lord).
@jtlampsu2 This seems to be everything they did together, but Paul Carrack was at that Gig as well. Paul Carrack sang Comfortable Numb, I dont know if I should upload it as well. I sadly dont have Mikes Gig on this DVD, but still... Great to see these great musicans here :)
Yea. Crystalizing moment in history. A few of those guys (waters, Clapton, Rutherford) are Mitt Romneys of Rock n Roll. I'm glad that Roger is touring, and tho it might sound like a complaint i was'nt going to drop $200 to see The Wall locally. @gideonquinn That's a good question. The Wish you were here Video on CZcams shows a big sea, with a man sailing on the sea. Maybe because of that? That's just my guess and not a reality one, because the video was uploaded after 2006... Maybe someone another knows more about it :)
You can see him doing the beginning of "WIsh You Were Here" on the right side at the beginning of the video. And for the rest of the video, the camera is focused on Roger. I don't know, how much of WYWH Mike played on this gig...
I think you're a bit hard Pink Floyd. Although I'm more a fan of Genesis, VDGG and Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd is still a legendary band. They have different styles and one is obviously a lot more accessible than the others. It doesn't mean it's better but they're still extremely creative. @illegalalien2 - PF are often hailed as the top Prog Rock band but to my mind they never progressed - people may not like the post Gabriel or post Hackett Genesis but you cant deny their music changed with every album.
@gonzataker Roger was talking about how they had become so laughable. He mentioned how good The Lamb and the Gabriel era material and expressed his disgust at what Genesis had become with We Cant Dance.
@gideonquinn - yeh - I take exception to that as well. Rutherford's a supporter of the Country Alliance as well - main people trying to keep fox hunting going.
I had the old 'Wish you Were Here' songbook from 1975, and there was a lengthy interview with Waters in it, and he dumped on Genesis big time in that too. Real condescending, stuff like "those young men will soon realize things aren't as they seem, blah blah blah" as if he was some wise old veteran, not the 3-4 years older he really was. As a 15-year-old fan of both bands I thought "What a dick."
@Chrisdrumz What was the Pink Floyd Album 1983? Was it better than We Cant Dance? I dont think so. I respect Roger Waters for alot things, but he should take a look in the mirror :D
@amirhamra Well, both bands had their early beginnings in the 60s, thats the only similarity I think, and maybe the great lightshow on stage. Pink Floyd did alot awesome songs, but I think that The Wall is some kind of overrrated, I feel the same with Dark Side. If I would have to pick up my faovrite PF Album, it would be Animals. Only because more people know about it. Only time Genesis ever became mainstream is when Phil's solo career took off and the Genesis albums that followed were more or less successful on the back of it.
@zazozung Interesting you should say that because lately he's actually been slamming himself;saying he was wrong about Dave,Nick and Rick continuing the Floyd name without him and admitting he was a bit of a bastard back in the day.
We Can't Dance was the best Genesis album in a long time. A helluva lot better than their two previous records. I have grown to appreciate the Shapes album a lot in recent years, but We Can't Dance is surprisingly excellent given the weakness in all three of their solo (and Mechanics) works immediately predating WCD. Waters is a miserable human being. Floyd hadn't delivered anything good between Wish You Were Here and Waters leaving the band.
@RaysTrack It depends on the View. About Genesis: The band ITSELF was Progressive, but NOT the songs, at least for some people. For some fans, "progressive" means to do a solo every time in every song in a difficult rhythm, in every second there should be a guitar solo. And Guitar Solos were still dominating in Pink Floyds music, if its "Sorrow" or "High Hopes"... In Genesis, many songs were just blown up "pop" songs like Domino or Driving the Last Spike, awesome tracks, but NOT "progressive"
David Gilmour didn't turn Pink Floyd into stupid pop band the way Phil Collins did with trio formerly known as "Genesis" after Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel left.
A lot of that album had songs that were pre written by Tony Banks in Genesis' earlier days with Anthony Phillips, along with new songs from Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett, and Peter Gabriel. Luckly Phil Collins' pop garbage was non existent on that album which made it such a great one.
when someone compares Pink Floyd sound to the sound of Van de Graaf generator, then this "someone" has a bear stepped on his ear, as we say in Russia. you understand nothing in music
Roger had some seriously negative things to say about Genesis and the whole WE CAN'T DANCE era. "The most disgusting piece of shit i've ever seen" is how he described the video of the song. I must agree.
Misunderstanding the worse song on the album (next to Turn it on Again) was a Sly & The Family Stone's 1969 hit "Hot Fun In The Summertime" stolen by Phil Collins. When Phil steals a song, he speed it up or slows it down to try to make a song out of it like he did with Behind The Lines on Face Value.
TOOPATHETIC ISTRASH you are really too pathetic. Phil did not steal Behind the lines. That is called an adaptation my friend. Of a song from a band he a part of and that he co wrote !!! As for the Sly song, you are again out of your mind...

A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering were great albums And then There Were Three mediocre Duke not so great. but never as good as From Genesis to Revelation to The Lamb.
Poor filming . . . . . not showing the dominant player, (doing the solo , . . .. etc.) . Of course it's Clapton playing lead, poor filming, that's why u can't see properly.
Really the only 2 cool people here are Roger & Nick. & the backround singers (who really make a show more than you think). The keyboardist who shakes Rogers hand? He sucks just for the reason of looking like an Equestrian Horse Trainer. 'Wots with the Brits these days? Grow yer friggin hair! The 2 other guitarist behind waters w/clapton, thats another image I hate: musicians just standing around. go get a smoke/you wont be missed. Imagery like this goes back to Ronnie Lane ARMS shows.
Let's clear things up, first of all Genesis would have never survived in the 80's with Peter Gabriel dressed up like a chicken, prog-rock was something of the 70's, and as someone has said before Phil Collins was becoming famous and Genesis was caught in the path, besides, the '76-'85 albums weren't that bad, Mama was their best music imho, and Invisible Touch has 80's written all over it. Regarding Pink Floyd, Roger Waters is a megalomaniac, narcissistic douche. Yes, he may be a genius when it comes to lyrics (although The Final Cut was pretty much a giant whining) and without him A Momentary Lapse of Reason is just a pretty shallow rock album, but David Gilmour makes every song listenable, whereas Mr."IAmPinkFloyd" does a great job helping people with insomnia. Oh, and guys, stop arguing about who's the best, its like that discussion between Beatles and Stones
" Genesis would have never survived in the 80's with Peter Gabriel dressed up like a chicken " --> Just couldn't stop laughing after reading this, but it's true. The transition from pure prog rock to a bit of pop by Phil, Mike & TOny was a good thing. Peter did a lot to get the attention of fans.
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is Genesis' best album to date. We Can't Dance is the most embarrasing garbage the once great band ever did. Everything about that waste was bad, the cover, so called music, producer everything!
Mmmmm, let me think.... yep, you might be right. But I liked all Genesis albums up to and around Duke, then it went very commercial and they forgot their magic formula which worked so well before that point.

We Can't Dance isn't that bad, on the other hand Calling All Stations sucks.
Fab musicianship spoilt by Roger Waters god awful vocals...Wish Gilmour had been there to sing it! Clapton is such a great collaborator and a sensitive player to what is required...always loved Dave Bronze bass playing too! As for 'Pink Floyd' v 'Genesis', in my humble opinion 'Genesis' have the edge rhythmically speaking, hence the musical arrangements have more scope and diversity...
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is one of their worst, the biggest self-parody album after the three best with Pete, they ripped off Quadrophenia with the most difficult and impenetrable story with no theme to it. The other bandmembers all say how flawed it is. The album is a disaster since they recorded the music without him, then he came back and just sang over everything. Genesis best ever period was "Trick Of The Tail" through "Duke". 1976-80 was their prime.
psychill22 I kind of agree with you... l believe that nursery crime, foxtrot and selling England is a masterpiece three album pack. And the other three top are A Trick, Wind and Duke. The Lamb and And then... are poor compared to these five masterpieces. The rest can be forgotten except for great songs on not so great albums like Carpet Crawlers, Dodo, Fading Lights, etc..

This is my Genesis top: 1. Selling England By The Pound. 2. Foxtrot. 3. Nursery Cryme. 4. A Trick Of The Tail. 5. Wind & Wuthering. 6. Duke. 7. Genesis. 8. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. 9. And Then There Were Three. 10. Trespass. 11. Abacab. 12. Invisible Touch. 13. We Can't Dance. 14. From Genesis To Revelation. 15. Calling All Stations. As you can see, I'm not a big fan of The Lamb.
Yeah, Pink Floyd were never the same after Peter Gabriel left! ;-)

Eduardo Gutiérrez Castillo ;{-
Good to see Eric Gilmour on lead guitar again

Renta2 you just dont get it
I find it funny the title is featuring only Mike Rutherford, when Nick Mason is on drums, and Eric Clapton is playing lead right behind Waters.
Grande Mike, personaggio schivo ma grande musicista.....Genesis forever
Rutherford ist als Gitarrist durchaus anerkannt....er kann mehr als er zeigt. Das macht ihn sympathisch. Als Bassist ist er grandios

Love pink floyd but to they didn't come close to genesis early or late !!
Other way round for me. Genesis were collectively far better musicians and song-writers than Floyd. Also, without Waters Floyd is empty pomp-rock.

Two geniuses of the progressive.
two very different progressives

is that eric clapton in the back on electric??

Roger needs to appear when Genesis reunites.
It happened, and he didn’t

Waters sounds horrible as usual on the vocals.
The nerve of this guy.
both massively overrated
This is my Genesis top:
1. Selling England By The Pound.
2. Foxtrot.
3. Nursery Cryme.
4. A Trick Of The Tail.
5. Wind & Wuthering.
6. Duke.
7. Genesis.
8. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.
9. And Then There Were Three.
10. Trespass.
11. Abacab.
12. Invisible Touch.
13. We Can't Dance.
14. From Genesis To Revelation.
15. Calling All Stations.
As you can see, I'm not a big fan of The Lamb.
