Why would a brand debase itself by selling on a site like this? Even if it isn't counterfeit, we all assume it is based on the intellectual property theft that occurs daily on these sites. Seems like a bad marketing move. I'd be less likely to buy them, even through legit channels.

Accountability is direct in this way maybe reasoning. Wondering who polices the fake branded make up and follows through on that process if they do that. Meaning outside of the imitated company filing a report or complaint. Dollar tree genetics carry statements that say something to the effect of "Compare to Almay...". On some products, but not often in cosmetics, and they do list product origin or manufacturer (or Both) which is maybe to comply with legal aspects of responsible party in the event of an issue, or the product is similar and not exactly the same or original name brand. Some retail carrying name brand will have a statement such as; "Made by So-and-so for Dollar Tree." Laws maybe in effect and are not followed up on depending on the company location. It raises a lot of questions and good points.

Hello! Resident Old Person on the Internet here 🤣 Shein is an offshoot of "She Inside" (so yes for those of you pronouncing it as SHE IN, you're correct) and I first came across this company while planning my wedding in 2011. Back then the planning forums were full of discussions about discount Chinese factories (Light in the Box was another popular one) who would "copy" any dress you sent them a picture of, along with your measurements. It was SO, SO, shady and I heard so many stories of heartbreak when dresses did not arrive on time, were not to order, were not the right size, or were just so cheaply made that they could not be worn. Grimly, a lot of them had little spots of blood on the stitching as well, another hint that the factory conditions were terrible, even back then.

THANK YOU for an important PSA, Robert.
Shein, like many other large online retailers, has a third-party "Marketplace" that's not directly coming from Shein but is more like Amazon, where different sellers can create a storefront and sell anything under the sun, including counterfeits. It's the same as the hubbub about Walmart "selling" Drunk Elephant and other brands not generally associated with discount stores like Walmart.
I personally think it's shady AF, and I don't think that it should be entirely on the buyer to beware, but it is important for consumers to know to check closely whether they are buying directly from the retailer or a third-party seller.

I am in Australia and just over 10 years ago it was incredibly difficult to source makeup here. A lot of brands didn't sell in Australia. Those that did had insane markups compared to overseas, and/or sold a very reduced product range, and we didn't have any large chains like Sephora (Mecca was around but it hadn't franchised and wasn't the massive online retailer it is today). Back then, Strawberry Net was a website that we would use to source cosmetics from abroad. For the most part it worked out, but they definitely sold some dodgy stuff too (expired makeup, sometimes fakes). Online forums had information for how to check if the product you received was real or a fake, as the fake cosmetics were often really dangerous. I was browsing looking for a purse I would like and found a website where a purse caught my attention and I checked if SHEIN had it, because I have found that a lot of purses from Amazon and Etsy are actually from SHEIN, turns out the $79 dollar purse was only $7 at SHEIN 🤨 I’ve also found earrings being sold on Etsy for a higher price than what SHEIN sells it for.

Same with skincare, except I got those from local and again, affordable Korean brands which aren't that hot on social media sites. I just see whatever ingredients work for me and stick to the same products for now.

I buy crafting stuff and the occasional cat toy.

Here's the thing, mall pulls out old products from shelves at least monthly. Those products end up in warehouses where people can still buy in bulk. I do buy stuff from sellers who does this in TikTok shop, they are legit, they even still have the barcodes from the mall they came from, but just be aware that these products are old stocks, not necessarily expired, but VERY CLOSE. They have at least 6 months to one year before the expiration date.

Even ordering from Amazon, I wouldn't for any popular products that are potentially counterfeit. As a former hairstylist, I had clients buy from Amazon and tell me the products didn't really work as well, or even smelled completely different. I had one bring in the product and it looked EXACTLY the same as one from the company. So I think they're out there producing some really great counterfeit products. The funny part, is that it wasn't even cheaper on Amazon, no clue why she bought that.😅

I am SO SICK AND TIRED of so many freaking scammers in this world. There are people who literally go to a job every day, a job to just scam people out of their hard earned money. It’s unbelievable! It p**ses me off so much. I hate hate scammers. I know so many people who have gotten scammed from buying things online, and it’s terrible we have to be constantly skeptical because of so many scammers. Ughh! 🤬 Why don’t they get a real job, making an HONEST living, like normal people? 🤬 Jerk-offs
Amazon is getting just as bad. There are so many fake products and fake “stores” on their website. When it first launched I never had to worry about getting fake products. Now I practically have to be a private investigator just to make sure products are legit, and place and order

It’s like when people buy brands that don’t officially sell on Amazon. It’s vendors who buy or find products that dropped off a truck 😅. Buying makeup and skincare on Amazon is too risky, unless the brand officially sells on Amazon. Check a brand’s retailer list. I used to buy makeup on eBay (don’t judge, it was in 2012-14). I remember buying a sample of Ben Nye banana powder aka someone putting it in one of those small MAC type sample containers.

I haven’t bought from SHEIN, but I would advise people to also be cautious when shopping on Amazon. I used to buy practically everything from Amazon, but I’ve become more careful. There are so many people selling junk out of their garage. It’s not necessary fake items. If you read the reviews, a lot of stuff is expired and damaged, or used and repackaged. That’s disappointing if you’re buying a pair of shoes, but dangerous if it’s makeup or food.

I was scrolling thru Shein (aka She-in) this morning, while looking at the makeup, I noticed a lot of high end brands on there. The prices seemed to match or be close to the prices at Ulta, Sephora, Amazon, and other websites. There were a few products listed on sale, but only by a few cents or dollars. Nothing drastic.
I find it hard to believe that name brands would allow their products to be sold on sites like Shein, legally, without some sort of legal contract. Otherwise, there'd be lawsuits on their hands. Nobody would allow their products to be sold by other companies without there being some kind of compensation. Shein is not a factory. They are a distributor, not a manufacturer. In other words, they dropship. They get their products in wholesale and sell them online and/or in stores. You can buy these high end brands all over, mostly online, or at Ulta and Sephora. Regardless, they're all made in China factories. So I don't see what the issue is.
