    And to the new wet shavers, There is nothing like experiencing a shave exactly like your grandfathers morning shave. You may even find a razor on line that is 100 years old for as little as $20 USD, then some how go back in time. Wet shaving is an incredible personal experience.

    When I started DE shaving about 50 years ago there was little choice, no advice no bad cartridge habits to forget. We seemed to get by based on watching our fathers. Mine was an expert in the application of toilet paper to cuts!. I have manage to get by without all these videos. But now I have risen above getting by. Who knew about the three pass shave? Who knew the lather could take more than 10 seconds and could be thick and slick. Not my father. A very useful video with what IMO represents sound advice, especially about not applying pressure when shaving. I've got a styptic pencil. Bought it last week. Never had any need - plenty of toilet paper handy.

    • @PaulHFilms
      @PaulHFilms  Před 6 lety +1

      Amazing isn't it Chris, no matter I think how long we have been shaving, we still actually learn different things or new ways of doing things, with the same products....can't beat the old toilet paper or rizla papers as my Dad used..lol....all the best and thanks....Paul.

    I would define this video as the definitive guide for everyone that is approaching wet shaving for the first time. I’ve started around 6 years ago watching Steve Faragher, GeoFatBoy and you Paul. It is true that today there is a lot more information on the web which is good, but at the same time confusing for someone that doesn’t know where and how to start. I hope that every newbie will watch this video as their first one. Cheers.

    Nice vid Paul. Its 2023 and the big changes since this video have been in brushes. Lots of wonderful synthetic brushes available. RazoRock plissoft $12, Maggard plissoft $12, AP Shave and Muhle STF for more money. No shedding, no smell, no break in period, no soaking, dries quicker, better quality control, less expensive, and no cruelty to the badger animal. Boar meat is popular in Europe so the bristles are a practical by-product.

    Like Yoda is the Jedi Master, you are the Master of wet shaving Paul! Fantastic tips to start anyone off on a good experience wet shaving. You have changed my experience from drudgery to something I look forward to and hate to see the shave come to an end. Having different scents helps to keep things exciting, and I can't say enough about Thayers witch hazel, fantastic stuff! Having a septic pencil is very handy as well, although I've only needed to use mine four or five times over a year, it really does the job. As wet shaving continues to grow, I would recommend stocking up on items that would go bad over time like blades, for supply and demand is going to drive the prices up like they have with the multi-blade razors. Thank you for the excellent video Paul! Sincerely, Ossie

    • @afrog2666
      @afrog2666 Před 6 lety

      The supply is vastly superior to the demand, the amount of choice is amazing tbh :)
      The 25-40 dollar range is huuuuge, so I don`t see razors going out of stock, and the same can be said for blades.
      But, it`s always good to have a good supply of your favorite blades :)

    I would recommend to buy an adjustable for first razor (like Rockwell 6c). It costs a little more BUT it will satisfy you for a long time. Start with mildest settings and go up slowly. If you go and buy some cheap razor you probably don't get so nice experience and will not be satisfied and you go back to cartridges which is a mistake :).

    Very well done Paul! I myself did buy 100 blades when I started out. I have since tried a few others, but fortunately, the 100 blades I got are Personna blue (comfort coated) and these work very well for me. I would also add that Omega makes an excellent synthetic brush (S10065) for $10 US. I alternate between this and Semouge boar. For me the synthetic works better with creams while the boar better with soap.

    A very useful tutorial video. Sure it is a good help for many people. I tried different ways of shaving and I can say that the wet shaving more comfortable and less traumatic than dry. it will come to anyone. And if you feel uncomfortable it means that you something doing wrong.
    When I almost bought a shaving brush from Gillette, well, I did not.
    I bought a synthetic shaving brush Omega S10065 and vary happy with it. For 6 bucks nothing can beat it.)
    But what about razor Lord, a great option for beginners.))
    I'm afraid that you can not say about the importance of the lack of pressure on the razor.) But you left a sweet for dessert.)

    I use a Parker Variant (adjustable) and I found that Astra blades work best for me. Get a quality razor- don't waste your time with cheap disappointing ones like I did. The first time I shaved with this combination I had a Eureka moment. Others may have experienced a similar effect when they found their perfect combination. For the first pass I set the razor at 2 or slightly below. Second pass at 1 and last pass at the lowest setting. I get between 3 and 5 shaves per blade. Witch Hazel works well as an aftershave but does stink. I recently bought some Pinaud and some Prorasso after shave. The Pinaud has a fairly strong scent and some may not like it at all. The Prorasso actually smells good but is doubly expensive. I have yet to try some scented Witch Hazel although I suspect the base smell of it probably overpowers whatever scent was added.

    Got a QShave TTO long handle for $15 and 20 astra blades on amazon for $20 total. Just got into DE shaving from trying a Dollar Tree one after passing it and thinkin hmm.. Just found a Shick Krona in a cluttered bathroom drawer that was my grandpas. Cant wait to give both a try tomorrow. Huge upgrade I imagine to my $1 razor (which did okay actually until the silo popped off one side).
    Next will be getting soap and a brush or if the shaves good i will stick with a canned shave cream.
    I have a beard also so I only shave my neck and cheek area 1-2 times a week so 1 blade should last a month. Im covered for about 2 years on what was about $5 in blades.. Soo much cheaper, I love it.

    I got a van der hagen, very mild. It was too mild, I got irritation from making so many passes. I will keep it but I did buy a much more aggressive razor, the Muhle R41. I am trying a sample pack of blades that I ordered. So far, the feather is the most sharp blade, next is personna platinum then Astra green. The feather blade and the R41 combo is the equivalent of shaving with something that would a cross between a cheese slicer and a chain saw, it is agressive , sharp as hell and very accurate to the motion of your hand (a little hand adjustment makes a big difference in performance). It can be mastered but you need to go SLOW, take your time and enjoy it. In addition, a pre-shave cream or oil goes along way. Im still experimenting and finding whats best for me.

    Big thanks all the way from India.
    Subscribed right after your comment about the cheap razors and brush. Bought them (way before I saw the CZcams shaving videos) and my face hurt. No kidding...worst than shaving with cartridge multiblade travesty...bought a nice Parker Variant and a decent brush and man it feels awesome. I can tweak the aggression of the variant, the brush feels way better.
    That and Gillette's recent Anti Masculinity ad confirmed that they are indeed cheap.

    I grew up wet shaving and loved it. In mid life I had a coronary event and started taking a blood thinner. My doctor had me move to an electric razor. Although it did well as an electric; never was able to get rid of some stubble remaining. I later shifted to following the electric shave with one of the new multi-blade razors and it improved, but never seemed to give a smooth skin without any stubble. Recently I bought the newly released Gillette double edge. My beard is heavy and I need to shave daily. Even after three passes I still have rough stubble on my face, but if I do a final pass with the multi-blade I get a baby bottom shave. I’d like to get solely to the double edge, but so far just can’t get that baby bottom without a final pass from multi-blade, but they are so expensive. Hopefully in time I will develop a method where I can use just the double edge. Any ideas for weaning away from the multi-blade and getting to just the double edge?

    Hello! Paul, You are very good at all times. Could you please do a video on "combinations"... for example a certain razor with a certain blade. For example, I noticed a EJ 89 is very good with a new Feather, but a Merkur 34HD with a Feather isn't as good unless it's the 2nd or 3rd shave on blade. Possibly, certain combinations of cremes and blades/razors work well together. I'm sure you can give us some of your choices for what works together. Thanks, Rob

      Hi Rob, I do say in my shaves what I think of the blade in the razor, and how it works , the only trouble with it is, what works for me, may not work for you, I find you have to use different blades in different razors over time, and the same with shaving soaps and creams....to really know what works best for you personally....I do find Wilkinson Sword, and Personna Reds work for me in all my razors, so they are my "go to" blades....all the best...and thanks..Paul.

    I am giving up cartridge shaving for D E shaving done away with 10 handles for cartridges will follow this avenue of a way to shave the cost of razors today is so expensive cartridge wise and complicate matters with many blades that don't make any difference.

    Great video Paul, while I see many of your videos and enjoy them I find that in UK some creams,soaps,aftershave etc are really hard to find. Would it be possible to add some online stores that you use and buy from in the description please. Thanks for the video.

      Creed Aventus is amazing, but a special use one....otherwise, there are many I love, especially the citrus lemon/orange based colognes.
