  • Stem cell treatments offer great hope for millions of people worldwide. In this vision-casting talk, Dr. Daniel Kota argues that it is time to bridge the gap between stem cell science and society. A better understanding of the benefits and risks of stem cell will help patients and scientists alike. Dr. Daniel Kota is a scientist at Sanford Research whose program focuses on cellular therapy and stem cell biology. Native of Brazil, Dr. Kota received his PhD in medical sciences and completed a postdoctoral training in neurotrauma while unlocking the therapeutic properties of adult stem cells across the USA at the Burnham Institute, Tulane University, Texas A&M University and the University of Texas.
Dr. Kota has a passion for translational science and his work establishes a paradigm shift in the way we view adult stem cells and how we can use them to treat diseases. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I live in Malaysia as an expat. I had a terrible pain in my knees esp at night from 1st stage osteoartritis. I ruined my stomach with anti inflammatories n painkillers. A friend had a stem cell transplant for her knee and was very happy with it. So i had it too at 62. It was cells from an umbilical cord. My surgeon told me it might not work at all, or it might work so so or it might be miraculous. Nobody knows why it is so. The cells go where they are needed.
My rt shoulder was healed completely the same day from an unbearable pain. My left knee took 8 months to heal completely n my rt knee stopped hurting at night but it still hurt during d day. That was ok as long as i could sleep at night. It cost me abt USD3,500 plus d drs fee for injecting me.

Stem cells from adipose tissue is only shown to work for conditions like neuropathy in feet and hands and nothing orthopedic, arthritic, etc. Any conditions involving deep tissue, bone, cartilage, etc., must be extracted from your own bone marrow to get the rich platelets and stem cells. A friend that lost a leg to cancer in adolescence, had his other knee and hip injected and felt so much relief, he went home and climbed the stairs four times! He said the pain was gone and his leg wasn't stiff.
Because of an accident, I'm having to consider knee replacement but I'm doing serious research into other options because of my age, recovery and actual results. I have found one thing to be true - do your research!

When you add better functioning mscs, you allow the body to repair itself, coordinated by the mscs. While the new mscs can’t live long in the toxic oxidative body of an old person, and become incapacitated like their own, the benefit is still obvious, as it would temporarily relieve eg pain while the tissues remain repaired.
I’m thinking similar benefit might be obtained from antioxidative strategies: the temporarily reduced oxidative (ros) environment would allow the body’s own mscs to finally do their work. You wouldn’t have to keep the oxidative scavenging up all the time, only until most damage has been repaired, since the tissues don’t break down again right away, and might provide relief for 6 months.
The more scalable oxidation reduction means are Vitamin C and DMSO since they can be applied in relatively large quantities. DMSO has a larger half life (12-24 hours) vs vitamin C (1h), but I don’t know how long you have to keep the oxidative environment down for some meaningful repair to take place.
Well I’m testing that strategy on my eyes right now, with diluted dmso, twice a day that should keep it level.
Since I believe myopia is caused by oxidation and concomitant hypoxia (as supported by papers), this should yield results.
Edit: using micro dose melatonin eye drops instead

Stem cell face transplants are a revolutionary medical procedure which rectify disfigurement due to injury, disease, or birth defect. As research continues to refine the technique, the potential benefits of this procedure will only continue to grow. advances in reconstructive surgery & medical technology are making it possible for doctors to transplant part (or all) of a face from donor. I don't think that scientists are good educators of society. They are good at bench-work, publishing papers and making great discoveries but lets be honest, very few have a gift of simple and clear delivery of news and ideas that can capture the short attention span of current public.. Talking to a scientist or reading scientific paper is confusing for anyone who is not a scientist. Someone needs to translate. The truth is that sales people are good enough educators; doctors are pretty good at translating science into medicine and explaining it to patients; and media loves to bring spotlight on things that are new and exciting in science. They all might be not perfect.. but they are the bridge between science and society do we like it or not. In addition, scientists are often guilty of categorical thinking with all associated dangers of it.

Assuming umbilical cord and placenta is where they get the MSC stem cells from, it sounds like a great idea. It is not certain that it wouldn’t grow cancer, but I’m suspecting a big percentage of the Panama clients are geriatrics and are likely to have some minor undiagnosed cancer, so if that were a problem they would know by now. Cancer is only a last resort because the body cannot repair the tissue cells, but with fresh MSCs that is unlikely. I do think it’s a panacea. The only downside I can see is you’ll have some foreign cells for years, but so what.

I agree that there should be caution with what stem cells you are working with for the problem you desire to fix and it’s unfortunate that the stem cells turned into different things for those people the guy talked about. But I still firmly believe that big pharmaceuticals are not friends. They and the CDC and WHO and FDA are not helpful enough and are rather well established enemies who only help enough to maintain good reputation. So I say more emphasis and effort and money and freedom should go onto stem cell research and legalization. It needs to be fast to punish the FDA and their associates for their sluggish and shallow reputation oriented “help”.

(Can you imagine the money they would have to set aside for that, and the vast coverup that would have to take place?) Critical thinking is using your reason in following the evidence and having an open mind when the evidence goes against your thinking. Defaulting to conspiracy theory with zero evidence is the opposite of critical thinking.

    • @ltspeaks315
      @ltspeaks315 Před 4 lety

@@EnglishTipsforFinns Exactly. He even said "stem cells are coming" as in WE WILL GET THERE SOON. He is simply warning us against potentially dangerous and always disingenuous clinics that profess their specific treatments have efficacy that is well-documented.
Also, big pharma would make TONS off the treatments as well. You cant patent SCs in Europe, I dont know about most other countries BUT the USA being pro-big business allowed MANY stem cell patents. In fact, if ppl think there is a conspiracy of big pharma around stem cells, it would probably be focused on having the EU acknowledge their existing US patents. The stem cells themselves dont even have to be patentable - the process of cultivating them and the equipment used to do so on a massive scale (if they are novel) can all be patented.
35 U.S.C. §101 sets out the subject matter that is patent-eligible. Section 101 reads as follows:
Whoever invents or discovers any new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof, may obtain a patent therefor, subject to the conditions and requirements of this title.
The Supreme Court has identified three exceptions to §101’s broad patent-eligibility principles: laws of nature, physical phenomena, and abstract ideas (Diamond v. Diehr (450 U.S. 175) (1981)). However, no specific statutory exemptions exist for the patentability of stem cells. The closest that legislation has come to addressing the patentability of stem cells is in the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act (AIA), Pub. L. 112-29, sec. 33(a), 125 Stat. 284, which states:
Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no patent may issue on a claim directed to or encompassing a human organism.
THIS is where it gets fascinating in a tertiary way. This of course doesnt apply to the vast majority of stem cells BUT the battle over abortion in the United States is easily the most contentious and dividing. If the supreme court rules on another abortion lawsuit it IS technically possible that a ultra conservative ruling will find that life begins at conception and therefore embryonic SCs would of course "encompass a human organism." I doubt it will matter for anything else, but it could influence how Pharma will lobby in favor for or against other types of stem cells. If company X has patents for a process to streamline the use of embryonic SCs and company Y has one for MSCs - it is conceivable that an accidental abortion ruling could take company X out of the budding stem cell treatment market and then dedicate resources to lobbying against other types of stem cells to prevent competitor company Y from gaining a more dominant position in the battle to attract the most medical investment from wall street. Random, I just thought it was interesting.

I have had only one full night's sleep in the last month. What typically happens is, I have to be completely doped up and wait for sheer exhaustion to outrun the pain that still exists even on impossibly high doses of medicine. Conventional medicine has done nothing but make me poorer and sicker for the last twenty years. If you talk to the people actually getting stem cell therapy from Wharton's jelly stem cells, you'll hear "miracle" stories. I don't accuse you of being on the payroll of of Big PH, but I do think you're completely inside the research bubble which has a sort of finger wagging view of every modality that they haven't checked out themselves.
