  • What’s so special about Anole Lizards? Kenro Kusumi uses his research and training to illustrate the extraordinary powers of regeneration of limbs in reptiles. By utilising bioengineering and manufacturing, Dr. Kusumi envisions a future where humans might be able to benefit from innovative regenerative therapies. Kenro Kusumi is a professor in the School of Life Sciences and Dean of Natural Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. He received his BA from Harvard College and his PhD from MIT. He carried out postdoctoral training at the National Institute for Medical Research in London. Dr. Kusumi was previously on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix. His lab uses the power of genome biology to help conserve and study the functional adaptations of reptiles. His study of the anole lizards have led to the first genome-scale analysis of their functional adaptations resulting in their description as the “Darwin’s finches” of reptiles. His lab has also uncovered sets of genes that are critical in the ability of anole lizards to adapt and regenerate parts of their bodies.     I noticed the list in the intro of regeneration listed several key things for regrowth, but what about bones? It was not listed and is a key aspect of human limb regeneration, especially in fingers and toes.

      We have grown frog’s rear limbs with bones, frogs got bones very similar to ours.

    Sounds like your coming up with very dangerous ideas that need immense anticipation before acting so that these ideas stay in a positive realm. -Me

      I agree with your comment that whatever is being said in the video sounds extremely risky. It's usually the case with things that are outside the scope of one’s understanding. People tend to fear what they are unable to understand. So, I can completely understand where you are coming from. However, I believe by the time these stem cell regeneration therapies will get universally adapted, people will have a little better understanding of how it will impact them and others around them. We had a rather similar experience with the use of genomic medicine, and what I am specifically talking about is the very basic part of it where it was intended to be used in fetal medicine to see if the fetus is healthy or has a gene that puts them at risk. But now we have started to see a lot of people using it and they are completely comfortable with it. What I believe helped in these ethical dilemmas surrounding genetic medicine was the use of nondirective genetic counseling to help people make informed decisions considering all the pros and cons. If we can introduce something like this for regenerative therapies, we can try and help use it in a positive way.
