  • Mark Galeotti demystifies the “siloviki” by unpacking their identity, diversity, and influence over Russian elite policymaking and society at large.
The question and answer session (Q&A) of all Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia events is exclusive to our fellows. We do not record the Q&A session.

Like this chap very much, he makes his arguments seem credible, gets into details which support every conclusion he makes.

I think the fact that so much wrong with todays society can be blamed on the intelligentsia and as a result makes the siloviki appealing as a result needs to be looked at more but Iam barely half way into this video. But you called siloviki 1940s Germans and that makes your positions and stances highly questionable at best

In Russia there is no `black and white`. In Russia there are only shades of grey. This piece bears that out perfectly.

They have a newspaper called "The Truth" (Pravda), that has been lying since 1917 ever since, so the word "pravda" doesn't mean the same anymore.

I do not wish to push this as a direct correllary, but this Siloviki seems to contain similar elements of something plaguing the West: Envy, Ego and Entitlement mentality.
The big distinction, of course, is that in the west individuals are infected, the broader society suffers from it; in Russia it seems to be more of a collective infection in which geographical neighbors (other nations) suffer the worst symptoms from the infection.

Mister, what's your motivation for investing so much in studying this Russian institution when you could have done a similar job on Russia's opposite institutions in your own country or any of the western countries? And as I'm typing this comment, I hear the way you characterise (or rather, pathologise) Putin. I'm afraid your attempts to come across as an analyst is betrayed by your difficult-to-hide animus towards Russia/Putin. That clearly disqualifies you as a scholar, let alone, an analyst. Why punch above your weight? You would have most probably impressed if you had focused on the instructions in your own country. Or better still, simply join the "free Assange" campaign. Hopefully, you've heard about this name
