As always, expect at least 1 non-English language film to pop up in the Best Picture lineup. Some possible contenders I think include ALL WE IMAGINE IS LIGHT (which won the same category in Cannes as THE ZONE OF INTEREST last year), EMILIA PEREZ etc. What do you think?

As an Indian, I pray that the selection committee this year doesn't fuck up like usual and send in All We Imagine As Light. The kind of reviews we're hearing about the film, with the right marketing it could just make it to the Oscars.

but it was directed by yorgos lanthimos, and had a ton of oscar-worthy techs
but, as a counter-counter argument, the academy nominated the florida project, which means they’re at least familiar with sean baker’s work to some extent and are willing to watch his films

Top 5 feels solid... the rest? Well, it's a dart throw year... especially with the lukewarm international slate at Cannes (so much for capitalizing on the strikes... hopefully Venice/TIFF brings some more noteworthy stalwarts to the table).

A Real Pain is being distributed by Searchlight, not Focus Features. Searchlight might campaign hard for it if Nightbitch and Kinds of Kindness turn out too polarizing for the public, although I’m still rooting for an Amy Adams and Jesse Plemons nom this year.

As someone who’s seen it, I think you might be sleeping HARD on Emilia Perez. But I could be completely wrong and biased cause it was my favorite film at Cannes

    • @LoganLikesMovies
      @LoganLikesMovies Před 3 měsíci +2

@@Sharpe1502 it’s a very ensemble based film so that’s the hardest part of it for me. It kind of alternates between Saldana and Gascon for who’s the true lead. But I kind of see Gascon as a Lily Gladstone type candidate. Just as impressive of a performance but she doesn’t have a prolific director like Scorcese backing her. Saldana and Gomez could also both make a run at supporting actress for sure.

I’m rooting for Anora. Sean Baker needs to be recognized.
    I’ll go ahead and predict:
    1. Anora
    2. Sing Sing
    3. Emilía Perez
    4. Blitz
    5. Juror No. 2 (I believe in Toni Collette and Nicholas Hoult)
    6. The Seed of the Sacred Fig
    7. Nosferatu (I’m manifesting this)
    8. Dune: Part 2
    9. Queer
    10. Nightbitch
I don’t see The Apprentice getting more than acting nominations and I kind of feel like the sheer amount of musicals being released this year, The Joker, The End, and Wicked might cancel each other out. I think Emilia Perez is the current international film front runner and it got picked up by Netflix, so that might be the sole musical getting a best pic nom.
Edit: I’m also secretly hoping The Substance miraculously sneaks in but I have zero faith in Mubi’s campaign skills.

    1. Sing Sing - which I saw at Miami Film Festival
    2. Dune Part 2
    3. Gladiator II
    4. Blitz
    5. The Piano Lesson
    6. The Nickel Boys
    7. Conclave
    8. A Real Pain - which I believe is Searchlight not Focus
    9. Anora
    10. Here - I’m putting my faith in Eric Roth
I don’t have Joker 2 because I don’t know if the academy will go for three sequels in best picture. Two from Warner Bros.
I don’t like that I don’t have any female directed films in here but I couldn’t find one to back. I’m not sure about Nightbitch. It gives me Girl on the Train vibes.
Personally I would love if no films from international feature are in this year’s 10. That way all 5 films in that category have a chance to win.

    • @Sharpe1502
      @Sharpe1502 Před 3 měsíci

The director is more well respected and the book isn’t a mystery/thriller. It’s a body horror/feminist dark comedy about a woman learning to be a better mother by not repressing her urges or instincts. The ending was the most pretentious shit ever but I could see an adaptation fixing it and having it land.

sacred fig isn't gonna happen. its entire gimmick is based on the director fleeing his country where he's wanted by the law & escaping to show it at Cannes. The movie itself is said to just be good and not great. Plus NEON will be busy pushing Anora and bury it like they buried La chimera.
