Bear conflicts give rise to new strategies in Leavenworth

Leavenworth is a major tourist attraction in the Northwest, drawing more than two million visitors a year. Also drawn to Leavenworth: Black bears, the native Cascades animals who normally shy away from people, but can become habituated over time by the easy availability of wasted food, unsecured garbage cans and other attractants.
