- One of the first two battleships in the game, and it's taken me years to finally get around to doing a review :) But finally, here we are - the mighty Yamato.

According to a Japanese naval historian, if an Iowa could close the range, the Iowa would have the upper hand, if the Yamato could stay at max range the Yamato would have the advantage. That being said max range BB fire isn’t always as accurate and the Iowa had a speed and radar advantage at any range.
@@hattrick8684 i think I knew that. The only real restriction on the Iowas were its Width and Armour Thickness in certain areas as it had to fit through the Panama Canal. They through the concept out for the Planned Montana Class. Which in my opinion, would have been a Super Battleship for the US.
@@hattrick8684 I think you got that mixed up: the Iowa's guns are made for long range and plunging fire. Iowa would be able to destroy the Yamato at long range. However at close range an Iowa would have a hard time dealing a full broadside from the Yamato's 18.1" guns.
Idk why I like listening to you talk about these ships so much haha. It's so much better than watching those tiny little 7 minute videos with no words lol.

Yeah, I'd say I'm about 50% effective at the moment. My brother in law actually took 6 months to fully get back to normal, fingers crossed that it's a bit quicker for me, but no worries, I'm doing a little better every day.

She sunk the Johnston, maybe not the final blow but the major blows. Johnston was hit with several 460mm BCAP shells, which punched straight through. Johnston was also hit with several secondary battery shells and a few cruiser shells. Towards the end of the battle HC was used to devastating effect.

By the way, the tier 3 German battle cruiser has the turret bug and the the last secondary gun on the Cleveland has it too 😢

Yama is also my first T10, I guess a lot of people really want to go for this ship, even with Colombo and Vermont around.
My very first Tier Ten BB and glad I worked my way up.
Very good and interesting review.. I enjoy alot the yama in game still being a meta bb and very impressive..

Great to see you back Terry. The unique equipment is a bit of a rip with the downgrade in turret traverse. Is that a mix up perhaps? Do you think it should be increased traverse? Definitely not worth it IMO. I still love Amagi despite the bad rep. Very hard to get used to but still fun to play
There are many ships that have the decreased turret survivability. I think this is similar in that its a different, but calculated risk to use. I think most legendary equipment is like that.
👍 You're one of the few reviewers who has the pronunciation right. It's "yama-to", not "ya-MAH-to".
👉 Nagato is pronounced similarly. It's naga-to, not na-GAH-to.
👉Akatsuki is almost always mispronounced with 4 syllables, "ah-khat-soo-key", when it's supposed to be 3 syllables, "ah-khat-ski". The "u" is completely silent.
👉Mutsuki is likewise butchered. It's 2 syllables, not 3. It's "moot-ski", not "moot-soo-key".
👉Kagero = "kah-gir-o" , not "ka-GEHR-o".
👉Yugumo = "yoo-guh-mo", not "yuh-GOO-mo".

I knew the Yamato wasn't just rusting her career away in port, but yea I honestly didn't know she sunk a CV and a DD, which the more you learn lol. But yea Yamato if I am not mistaken missed the action in the Battle of Leyte Gulf which we know Musashi was sunk in that battle and there is some saying that the group where Yamato was at, the Iowa was also in that general direction, and both were very close to actually engaging, which that would have been incredible to have seen (except if you were a crew on the Iowa). But yea things happened and that clash never happened. The Americans upon realizing how powerful these ships were made them realize that it was a good idea to just CV them. Awesome video as usual Terry, and hope for you a swift recovery.
Honestly i don't think the USN had any clue how big the guns were, or how truly massive they were til postwar. Obviously scrutinizing photos from the attack on Musashi gave the first decent intel and clues, but I dont think the USN was afraid of sending Iowas up against them, and imho, an Iowa vs Yamato battle could go either way- chance, luck, and who lands the first blows, as well as what weather, day/night, and conditions were present, rather than any overwhelming superiority or advantage, would determine a victor...
@@wheels-n-tires1846 Indeed the USN didn't know the full details until the post war period. Even tho they got a first good look on Musashi, the Americans still thought they had 406mm guns but yea they just had no clue. Yea a clash between these two would heavily depend on the weather and such. If there was good weather, then Yamato would be more likely to win but since Japanese radar wasn't too good then cloudy or other bad weather would put Yamato at a disadvantage. That and Iowa can disengage and use it's speed. Yamato was still fast at 27.5 knots tho
@@COMMANDER-wm9vr Agreed- I think the Iowas speed and radar gave an initial edge. Rate of fire helps a bit too. Of course those advantages could go away really quick after a few 18.1in hits... Unless its a night action where the Iowa has all the advantages, its really flip a coin battle I think...

Although the Japanese were known for being good night fighters too (like shown in the Battle of Savo Island) But with radar and speed yea no doubt the Iowa has a big advantage over Yamato although yea as you said a few hits will make the Iowa retreat if the Yamato doesn't get a good hit on her first

This ships first prototype also had the disgusting pagoda superstructure and the 356 in 3x3 configuration, seeing the prototype completely Hurts my eyes

I think precise aiming (and also secondary overload) increases the sigma value

This was my first T10 bb as well. I'm weird though, I enjoyed pretty much the whole IJN bb line. Of course it helps to have the legendary commander Yamamoto :). I'm CptCarryPants in game.
Kongo was great, Fuso was ok. Nagato is one of the highlights imo, I play her almost like a German BB. Amagi is rough for her tier, especially due to the turret bug. Izumo I believe actually may work as a pure back row fire support, but I have to test with an actually upgraded ship.
@@FunandGameswithTerry Very interesting! For me Fuso is one of the great battleships in the game. Just checked, my wr in her is a little over 75%, and avg dmg just over 50k.
I have the black Izumo and actually quite like that ship, but it certainly has significant quirks. One thing I think worth mentioning about that ship is the rear triple 3 gun secondary guns. In event of kiting/running from a destroyer those guns are very useful.
Too bad I can't give you my Yamato historic camo! I sold that ship when I got the Black Yamato.
Definitely on point about the Amagi. If I'm using an IJN ship in T8 it will be the Kii.
@@FunandGameswithTerry I think we have fairly different play styles :). In IJN battleships I try to avoid brawling if at all possible haha. I don't care much about turret traverse or maneuverability in those battleships. I set up for accuracy and range.
I thoroughly enjoy trying to be very tactical and strategic with how I set up at the beginning of a match so as to reduce changes of direction as much as possible.

What's different that Musashi is T9 and Yamato is T10?

Also I wanted to say that I’m also trying to get the Yamato, I’m at the Izumo. And I’m not enjoying it, especially since I put no blueprints on the ship since I’m saving it for the Yamato.
And I have Yamamoto on the ship
Stock Izumo grind has been exceedingly painful. I would have spent the blueprints if it wasn't for the turret bug, but for me, that makes Izumo a T9 Nagato with 6 guns. I ended up paying 300k free XP.
If they fix the bug, I'll do an Izumo review, and we'll see how bad it really is.

So quick question...(sad ive been playing 4+ yrs and dont know this). The citadel rate- is that XXX% times the shell damage?? Is any damage reduction factored in or is it straight shell alpha damage times citadel percentage???
Ignoring the T12 captain skill, or legendary skills, it's alpha * cit_factor * (1 - damage_reduction).
Looking at 23:03, I'm hitting a CC. Yama's AP alpha is 2299, citadel factor is 300%, and CC's damage reduction is 16.5%, so it's 2299 * 3 * (1 - 0.165) = 5759. In game, we see 5757, so they round a little differently, but that's how this works.

Well, good ol' Yamato, solid 460mm guns, armour is not terrible, maneuverability is on the meh side, trash secondaries and AA(well, historically accurate...)
The grind for her is pain tho
Izumo is entirely a shell magnet, made out of citadels.
Amagi is not really terrible, but the t8 meta makes Amagi look less competitive.
I used to love Yamato, but as time went by, she doesn't really suit my playstyle anymore.
I eventually reached the Republique, and man do I love that meme machine.

I suppose it depends a bit on your play style. I really enjoyed the grind. However, I like to sit at range and snipe/lend fire support, which isn't everyone's cup of tea.
For me, yes. I don't enjoy pure long-range fire support too much, and was pleasantly surprised how well she holds at mid range. It's a great combo of enough range to cover half the map, and enough armour to slug it out when needed. This is what Kremlin should have been, but can't play due to troll dispersion, poor pen and abysmal secondaries. Yama fills this role really well.
