  • Welcome to my first Feature Length ship guide video, featuring none other than everyone's favorite class!
I have tailor made the pacing to follow my usual How-to's so hopefully it won't be stale, since I'm omitting attempts on filler jokes so I can cut down duration (Yes it would've become an hour long if I made it the normal way)
    • Why Submarine? Because they are staying, yet no one seems interested to cover them.
    • Why an hour long video? So I would only have to do this once for the entire class.
    • Video is too long! Watch it in 2.0x speed and it would still be digestible ))
Update: I made an update video that covers all the submarine changes since this video released, link to the video: • Comprehensive UPDATE t...

04/01/'24 - New video covering all the submarine updates has been released
    =========
This comment will be pinned for things not covered in the video, either superficial things, things I forgot, and possible future updates related to submarines.
    10/13 (Video release)
    • Hydrophones does not go through island
    • Submarines cannot detonate
2:17 - For clarification purposes, Submarine on Periscope spots enemy surface ships based on their air detection value (Like how Planes spot ships)
54:34 - Another clarification, the theoretical "Radar Spotting in" indicator would appear if a Radar IS active
    • Added Submarine Spawn location (Credit to TTaro_ check video description)
    • Added Submarine Minimap Ping Locator Mod (Credit to TTaro_ check video description)
    10/14
    • @dzello pointed out that submarine splash damage hitbox comes from the shells, not the submarine.
25:54 shows airstrike ASW shatters when landing on submarine's hulll. This is patched, now it will immediately blow up like HE and deal full damage.
    12/13
    • Super Submarines are announced on RU Server.
    12/15
    • Proposed changes to submarines are announced on WG stream.
    • Main topic is addressing Shotgunning. New planned torpedo mechanic (for submarines) will be dynamic speed and damage. Torpedoes will have slow speed & damage when it launches, then gradually gained speed & damage to their normal values. This is to make Shotgunning less effective and less exploitative, but not impossible to do.
    • Another proposed change to Hydrophone, they will have shorter duration (6s). The purpose is to make it more as a defensive tool and not something to be used to line up shotguns.
    • Heavy cruisers will all get plane ASW (except Dutch)
    • Some surface ships will get Submarine Surveillance consumable
    • Submarines will get maneuverability buffs
    • Possible updates to signal, upgrades, and submarine skills later down the line
    Full proposed changes here: worldofwarships.com/en/news/general-news/upcoming-changes-to-aircraft-carriers-and-submarines/
    Side note:
    • U4501 has been released and its the first submarine that features Repair Party.
    • Also on U4501, its the only German submarine with 15s DCP.
    • I-54 on the Russian server will be the first Hybrid submarine.
    Protip: Watch in 2x speed.

    • @HarunaKaiNi
      @HarunaKaiNi Před 7 měsíci +14

      Misc. Info:
      • U-4501 repair party can only be used on the surface level and cannot be used on periscope or deeper
      • The U-4501 only have homing torpedoes, similar to British submarines
      • Alliance's slow torpedoes is an advantage on its own, so don't bother getting torpedo tubes modification 1 on the third upgrade slot as it would weaken the homing capability of its torpedo

I've said the same thing about hydrophone breaking the 'information balance' on spotting. I think that the discrepancy between periscope and surface spotting could use work as well. Overall subs can spot you multiple different ways, but the only thing you learn is "spotted" and sometimes not even that, while every other class gives far more information when it spots you. RPF gives a "you've been RPF'd" indicator, and so should hydrophone. And you should get a different spotted indicator from a periscope depth sub than from surface spotting, just like plane spotting (or hydro/radar with mods).
If ship-based depth charges cleared pings in an area (or even if the 'line' from the torp to the target was through the splash), things would be a little more balanced; ships with surface DCs would be the more defensive version. And DDs could defend their allies even if they can't push the sub by dropping DCs to disrupt homing. Might have to increase ping cooldown so it can't be instantly reapplied... but that'd probably be good for balance anyway.

    • @Yurobeat
      @Yurobeat  Před 7 měsíci +36

That's actually a good idea. Negating Sonar pings by dropping ASW. Like dropping chaff to avoid heat seeking missile.
I mean ASW were free to use already anyway, so why not implement them as defensive measure.
I hope WG took note of this (doubt) it will atleast give DD/Cruisers more chance at dodging.

The thing to remember about sonar is that it is a highly situational tool. While it can guarantee you hit a target, using it is basically the equivalent of shining a flashlight into a dark room. Sure, you may see what you’re trying to hit, but everyone else will be able to see you. The best way to use sonar in this game, to borrow a quote from hunt for Red October, is “one ping only, Vasily.”

Note for torpedo homing: they have a fixed turn rate of 2.5° per second for a single pinged torp, and 5° per second for a double pinged torp. Also, the torpedo homes in on the side of the ship closest to the torpedo, not the middle of the pinged section, which enables you to abuse it while dodging.

The only information missing, really, is the ASW splash ranges. This is important for both the sub to know, and the ASW to know. As all ASW is not created equal. This is, in part, why people think ships with ship-based ASW are far worse than plane-based ASW.
Plane-based ASW has a splash radius of 350m.
Ship-based ASW has a splash radius of 800m.
The randomness of the ping arc indicator is that it shows up ~1km of the sub's true position.
Those ranges are good to know because it points to two major things.
    1. You have to be spot on with the plane-based ASW. Sure, you can reach out 11km on some BBs, but you have a 350m radius, a 10s lead time, and the ping indicator has a margin of error 3x larger than your splash radius. Because of this you want to spread out your plane-based ASW and not bunch it all up in the same location.
    2. ship-based ASW can be launched much sooner than most people give it credit for. They'll hold rolling charges until they are right overhead. No need, roll early because you have nearly a KM splash radius to work with! Not only that but most ship-based ASW recharges in about the same time it takes to roll 1 pattern.
Finally, along with the above, is the other note I didn't see in the video. As the sub the ASW has two colors. ASW that is orange won't do damage. ASW that is red will.

Thank you for the guide! I would like to note something about homing: If you give them a large lead on an enemy vessel, they'll home in better.
So yes: shoot wide, and hit dead on.

Thanks for the extense and well done guide yuro-dono, maybe i will try to put this in practice (i have the 3 tier 6 but never played them) in the near future.
For ASW in DDs i personally like to deal with them in italian DDs (suported by my team sub) in mid tiers (5-7) bc a lot of them are still learning and are prone to over-extend. So you pop your exhaust smoke, hope your sub detects the enemy and beeline to him and throw a bunchload of depth charges while being undetected; if things go wrong (most of the times) and your smoke doesnt make it, you give the enemy team a 6 torp present and use your emergency speed boost to bail out to safety.
Most of the times the last part will be the only one to work, but is really satisfying to destroy a sub using DDs (wich IRL were the ones to do it).

5:55 the segment about "not charging on the surface" was actually not intended (or they changed their mind) and it charges on the surface now, even when active. It's the first bullet point under the "Other Changes and Improvements" section of the 12.9 NA patch notes

I completely approve of this video as objectively useful in learning about subs. Admittedly, with the recent changes this video is obsolete in parts, but the sub speed above 40 is fiction without the Sierra Mike flag, UNLESS we include the steel ship Gato. These relatively high surface speeds are unique to the Salmon and Gato, and currently the Salmon only passes 40 WITH the Sierra Mike flag. All other subs are significantly slower.

Shotgunning is not more popular because sitting in your face pinging is easier but every few matches you'll see someone, no matter the class, getting the fun treatement anyway. I also like the spotting part where basically says the submarines have all the advantage and chances are that your gameplay is over for most of the game cuz of it. This is a very good video, precisely why I don't like it, because teaching people how to play submarines is the last thing I need.

Congratulations and thanks for the effort and work put into this video. I'm part of the minority who doesn't suffer at all from 95% of subs, they are easy kills in my books, so I'm glad you try to educate the masses (Altho, unlike torps that have been spotted for an hour already, I'm sure the masses will manage to dodge a 1 hour video) AND I myself have managed to learn a thing or two.

It was a very informative video that I watch straight through. Sadly I haven't play games of WoWs since early this year, save for grinding out the birthday containers in Coop. I think it was the combination of Carriers, Hybrid Cvs, ships with air strikes, submarines and just a general disgust with the actions of WG. The burn out from WoWs was so bad I rarely play any other games.
