*English Translation of the Flower Duet*
Under the thick dome where the white jasmine
    With the roses entwined together
On the river bank covered with flowers laughing in the morning
    Let us descend together!
Gently floating on its charming risings,
    On the river’s current
    On the shining waves,
    One hand reaches,
    Reaches for the bank,
    Where the spring sleeps,
And the bird, the bird sings.
Under the thick dome where the white jasmine
    Ah! calling us
    Together!

Thank you for the beautiful translation, which I'd never before seen. But having been ignorant of the words & having never seen the entire work performed, I'd always imagined the duet to be an exchange between two flowering plants, not humans. That might seem strange to many but I was brought up to view plants & all else that's called "Nature" as being as alive as humans but with each form of life having its own way of seeing & living & interacting with others. This view of life is sometimes glimpsed in western or modern society, but English & other Eur. languages don't contain terms that succinctly or completely describe it. And I'm not sure if any other "old world" languages contain terms which describe this view that is a major part of most, if not all, pre-Columbian languages of N. Am. What can be succinctly described in classic Nahuatl or in the native languages classified as Iroquoian or Muskogean or in the hundreds of known native languages are the general ideas re: the kinds of animals & plants & the various kinds of mountains & parts of the "landscape," etc, each with their own attributes & ways, with each having its own way of living & interacting with others, with each also contributing to the whole of life we call "Nature" or "the Earth."
Somehow I had always imagined something more like the conversations found in Ravel's "L'enfant de Savauge," his opera with lyrics written by Colette. In this opera, teapots & squirrels & all else in the small child's room turn on him & tell him how badly he has treated them in his fit of temper.
That is how I'd imagined the flowers in this song, except of course that the two flowers (part of two living plants) are expressing their love & adoration for one another. In many performances I've seen online, the duet is sung by two women & in at least one recording the two women are dressed in flower costume. And in flower costume they sing & sway about in ways that look as if they are expressing their mutual adoration.
Although the actual poem is quite beautiful, I can't help but feel a bit disappointed to find the duet to be a love song sung by a human couple. No doubt the opera is wonderful & the duet beautiful as an idyllic scene of the lovers in a natural setting, but I think I prefer to see the duet as a love song between two flowers.

      @yeahaboutthatthough3656 Před 3 měsíci +4

@xil'Other people's culture as a backdrop to an out of context opera is fine" is crazy. You ought to be embarrassed to have suggested that in public.
Meanwhile on Earth one, using cultural attire as costumes in a play by non-members of the culture, specifically when that performance is unrelated to that culture itself is distasteful---whether or not you agree. This practice trivializes the deep significance of this cultural attire, perpetuates stereotypes as white women shuffle in the background like they think Japanese women must have done, reinforces power imbalances.
Moreover, it lacks authenticity and understanding, leading to misrepresentation and disrespect towards the culture and its people. Therefore, it's crucial for artists and their supporters to approach cultural representation with sensitivity, respect, and a willingness to engage with the communities they're portraying for guidance.

    • @LadyLixil
      @LadyLixil Před 3 měsíci +12

I am not in defense of the play at all. The person specifically stated that they have no idea what is happening in the play, only that the costumes were gorgeous. You were swift to want to give me a full explanation when you felt like you were trying to put me in my place, but why didn't you use a helpful approach in educating that person about why you disagreed instead of trying to humiliate them? The person already made it clear that they do not understand the context, they just wanted to make a nice statement. For all of your social posturing, you could use decorum on the internet for people who just want to have a nice day. Let that person enjoy saying it's gorgeous costumes in the context or explain why you disagree instead of just trying to put someone down.
My culture has constantly endured cultural appropriation. In fact essentially everything from the African American diaspora has been taken by everyone around this world. Still, I have enough joy left in this world to be able to let someone enjoy something and not demean every little thing that they say without being willing to either educate or just move on.
While I'm pretty sure you feel like you just had a big moment right there, I'm afraid you missed the mark. I do wish you a good day though.

Simply gorgeous... But if I remember the story of Lakmé, I'm not sure how it could be termed 'comic' in any way...

Comique is the name of the Opera House as opposed to the main Garnier Opera House. It was called that way because it was mostly dedicated to Opera Bouffe pieces with spoken dialogues between the arias, at the time it was created. Nowadays it’s mostly dedicated to French composers of the 19th century like Bizet, Thomas, Offenbach, Delibes, Massenet etc. Opera Comique is a genre but not necessarily comic.

While it could be performed at the house of the same name, the terms dates from the 18th century and really means that the work contains spoken dialogue and singing. Carmen is another great example of this.

French 'comic opera' just means that the story has spoken lines as well as song.

    Sous le dôme épais
    Où le blanc jasmin
    À la rose s'assemble
    Sur la rive en fleurs
    Riant au matin
    Viens, descendons ensemble
Doucement glissons de son flot charmant
    Suivons le courant fuyant
    Dans l'onde frémissante
    D'une main nonchalante
    Viens, gagnons le bord
    Où la source dort et
    L'oiseau, l'oiseau chante
    Sous le dôme épais
    Où le blanc jasmin
    Ah!
    Descendons
    Ensemble!
