    "House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series. A prequel to Game of Thrones (2011-2019), it is the second show in the franchise, created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. Both series are based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by Martin. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik are the showrunners. Based on parts of the novel Fire & Blood, the series is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. It portrays the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession, known as the "Dance of the Dragons"
    "Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, the first of which is A Game of Thrones. Set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, Game of Thrones has a large ensemble cast and follows several story arcs throughout the course of the show. The first major arc concerns the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros through a web of political conflicts among the noble families either vying to claim the throne or fighting for independence from whoever sits on it. A second focuses on the last descendant of the realm's deposed ruling dynasty, who has been exiled to Essos and is plotting to return and reclaim the throne. The third follows the Night's Watch, a military order defending the realm against threats from beyond Westeros's northern border."

    The "overwhelming superiority" in support of Rhaenrya was a mirage, since the three most populous kingdoms with the most wealth and resources supported Aegon (yes the Reach was half and half, but Honeywine effectively ended all Black activity there for the duration of the war). Counting the wealth of the Reach or the Westerlands or the population of the Crownlands is as critical if not more critical than head counting the 58 or something Lords that supported Rhaenerya, many of whom were from smaller lands and had smaller hosts.

    • @pg1448
      @pg1448 Před rokem +11

      Also it just comes down to weak writing. The whole Dance is full of contrived writing, but what especially irked me is that some reach houses closely tied to the Hightowers such as Costayne or Tarly decide to go to war against their own kin or liege lords to support frickin Rhaenyra and Daemon on remote Dragonstone. But at the same time Westerlanders and some Riverlanders with no ties to the Hightowers do fight for Aegon. That just makes no sense. The sole reason the whole Reach doesn't back Aegon is that a united Reach, Westerlands and Stormlands faction would obliterate the North and Riverlands easily.

      @@pg1448 Yeah I guess it's probably cause f&b was being written as a timeline of events, right. After a few major houses, George probably didn't give too much thought on the motivations and reasons for where the loyalty of a household would lie. He most likely pulled random names out of the hat and then backfilled. Which inevitably creates an issue on fielding sides for the battles in a realistic way. Personally I'm not a huge stickler for logistical realism. I'm fine with logistics taking a backseat to themes and symbolism within reason. But even I could not help notice the Army of the Riverlands when led by Kermit Tully, son of Elmo (lmao George wasn't even trying with the names) suddenly went from the historical punching bag of Westeros to this Avengers Assemble squad with insane plot armor that kept respawning and was apparently the reason for every Black victory everywhere in the map. I guess the best Riverlands commanders were born a couple hundred years too early. If only they were around for the war of the five kings.

      If we're talking books then Aemond is even less competent and suited to be king than Aegon. The writing team just had their personal favorites and tried to add depth/sympathy to their favorites, while scapegoating others like Aegon to make Aemond/Alicent look better. They pretty much whitewashed those two and then made Aegon into a cartoon villain/Joffrey 2.0 so he's universally hated and everyone supports Rhaenyra while still allowing their favorite greens in Alicent/Aemond to be fan favorites. Book Aegon is honestly a top 3 character in the dance, it's really frustrating how his character got destroyed by the showrunners. The whitewashing backfired on both sides, because I'd argue book Alicent is a more compelling character because she has agency and leads the green council in the book.

    I am slightly more sympathetic to Team Green, because Viserys being the legitimate king is based off the Great Council deciding in favour of male primogeniture, which in addition to common law would make Aegon the rightful king. Rhaenyra's obvious bastards were also certain to cause conflict down the line.
    It's kind of crazy how enormously Rhaenyra fumbled the bag despite having unlimited support of a popular king, far more dragons, more big gun houses (Minor Spoiler: Stark, Velaryon, Arryn, Tully, Tyrell vs Lannister, Baratheon, Hightower) and many agents in the enemy camp.
    Aegon is awful, but he is young with potential for change and Alicent's son, Rhaenyra went out of her way to marry a cartoon villain in Daemon, who has been laughably evil for many decades. Obviously neither side is right, but watching Rhaenyra is like watching someone lose on easy mode in a game.
    Alicent is probably my favorite green, because of how limited and conflicted she is, while still doing everything to save her family and having both a lot of reasonable criticisms of the Blacks, as well as personal hang ups. Then again I also like Larys for the opposite reasons lol.

A few more of them I could see being dispossessed of their lands though - Greyjoys, Lannisters, Martells and Tyrells are all at risk here. I'm pretty sure the Arryns, Baratheons and Starks are safe as ruling dynasties

    Aegon is naught but a usurper.. but, by the laws of gods & men, the crown SHOULD have been his. Viserys defied centuries of tradition, tradition that had made him King in the first place. Rhaenyra is the True Heir but Aegon is the Rightful Heir. Viserys should have called a Great Council like the wise Jahaerys.

      @@fantasyhaven1 Because Aegon is the first-born son of the King? Lmao Pushing Aemond over Aegon would dumb af. First because it would kill entirely the Green cause and 101 Council's precedent. Second, not noble House would support Aemond over Aegon or Rhaenyra or their legitimate sons( Jaehaerys or Aegon the younger).
      Plus,on the book Aegon was the politically smarter brother,much more than Aemond.

    • @fantasyhaven1
      @fantasyhaven1  Před rokem +3

      It wouldn't kill the Green cause - a male would still be inheriting the throne ahead of a female which is what matters.
      And yeah, if Aegon were to abdicate, nobles would absolutely switch to Aemond. Aegon willingly wants to leave. They would also accept Aemond jumping ahead of Aegon's children for pragmatic purposes - it's better to rally behind an adult warrior with a giant dragon over a child during a time of crisis.
      And yeah you're right about the book. Aemond is just a psycho in Fire and Blood, while in the show he seems to be a learner man as well as a warrior

    Team Black for me. Idk why people preach gender precedence, the council of 101 was a vote between candidates, not gender. Succession is often messy, and there was never a firm rule. Named heirs have been far more common than a lot of the characters (and fans) seem to remember. More recent to the main story Aerys wished to set aside Rhaegar and name Viserys, and prior to the dance Maegor had named the Princess Aerea.
    In the case of the dance (hotd), Rhaenyra has more Targaryen blood, and the greens tried supplanting her before her own heirs and questions about their legitimacy. If anything, prior to the green coup, precedence for succession landed on those with the strongest bloodline (that too was the named heir). In reality, succession went to the strength of arms.

    • @yusufraage8554
      @yusufraage8554 Před rokem +2

      The council was because Jaehaerys I didnt have the balls to say he didnt want a women on the throne so he yielded his responsibility to lesser men and they chose wrong.
      A king with absolute power lets lords who were conquered by his grandsir decide who will rule the realm.
      In my opinion the end of the Targaryens started with Jaehaerys I because of that council, if only he chose one or the other atleast the realm would know that the king makes the decisions.

      @@yusufraage8554 I must've missed that part in all the books and histories :S lol
      Jaehaerys (the conciliator) knew how to rule, a king that understood the power of able advisors. He had no clear heir, and indecision would have resulted in war. "Wrong" decision would have put the Targaryens offside with any number of powers within the continent. Putting the decision on the lords is an incredibly wise move - it keeps the subjects loyal to the ruling family, keeps possible threats rivals to each other and not the royals, and the decision made is extremely hard to argue with when they all hard a part in deciding.
      The only mistake in it, one could say, is allowing and trusting the maesters to collect, collate and count the votes without corruption

      @@yusufraage8554 how is that a problem, and how were future Targaryens weaker after it?
      After the reign of Jaehaerys, Dorne was briefly conquered by force, then brought into the realm with diplomacy. Multiple pretenders and their rebellions were put down, foreign would-be invaders were stopped before even treading foot on Westerosi soil, and the "Last Targaryens" (minus Daenerys/Viserys) whilst mad as hell still commanded the loyalty of over half the realm.
      If anything, the Targaryens rule was consolidated by the council. If not for the council, there could have very easily been a Baratheon, Valeryon or even an Arryn dynasty rise and take the throne.
