Keep an open mind, friend. You can fly safely, you can fly risky, and anywhere in between. In my opinion, the sport looks worse than it is. For example, if this was General Aviation (in a plane) he likely would have perished. With paramotors, there are plenty of injuries but only 6 deaths in a year. There are many GA deaths in a year, the paramotor risk should be similar to motorbiking.

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  Před 3 měsíci +70

Absolutely! It’s incredible that they are able to do so much these days. My arm surgeon feels very confident that I’ll be able to get a decent percentage of the range of motion in my right arm back to what it was. They say it might require another surgery, and that’s OK with me. I trust that they are my best shot at getting back to some sense of normalcy. All of the surgeons that have worked on me have been incredible. For that, I feel so fortunate.

To be fair, the doctor was probably just speaking to healing prognosis, and did not want to overpromise on the extent of the patient's recovery. To say, "Oh yeah you'll definitely fly again," and then the healing body doesn't like that plan, then it's a hard pill to swallow. Docs don't want to overpromise and paint expectations. They have to be brutally honest, in the gentlest way possible. It does look like Anthony will be ok to fly again physically based on his progress from what we can see and he reports, but these were serious injuries.

Cancelled my flight programs, loaded up the VR sim instead and won't be going back to aviation. Stay safe out there guys.

You shouldn't do extreme sports and hobbies if you have a family that depend on you and/or have a deep love of life.
I feel that as a human experiencing flight is one of the best feelings ever but you have to carefully consider if the risk of falling out of the sky to your death is worth the feeling.
Was really sad to hear about Grant because I really enjoyed his videos, even sadder to hear about the family he left behind.

    • @paraglidingprospector
      @paraglidingprospector Před 2 měsíci +5

      I can totally understand…
When I first started to pursue paramotoring, I too was put-off after Grant’s accident. Almost gave up right then and there. I was a huge fan of his and had really been watching a ton of TKOR’s videos too.
I put my training on pause and attended a paramotoring event here in Arizona. I met some pilots and a few trainers too. The owner of the airport/airstrip and I got to chatting and we discussed paragliding as an alternative option. He put me in contact with my paragliding instructor and I started training.
The day before my first flight, a fellow pilot wrecked his newly purchased hang-glider (a very fast and sporty wing) and he was airlifted to the hospital.
Our group was camping and training in Northern Arizona so we had our own pilot debrief around the campfire later that evening.
The next day, I had to really decide if paragliding was the right form of aviation for me… buncha crazy clowns running off cliffs with strings attached to bedsheets and no motor? 🤪
Later that day, we took a truck up to the top of launch. I stood there all geared-up… thoughts of my friend’s wreck and Grant’s death swirled around in my head, but eventually I shook off the all the negative internal dialogue and went for it.
A gust of wind came along, the perfect cycle, and I inflated my wing… I ran off the mountaintop and eased back into my harness for my first flight. I pushed out away from the mountain (an inactive volcano) and enjoyed a short sledder down the the LZ where I nailed the landing with excitement!
If you’re considering getting into paramotoring (PPG), then I highly recommend getting your P3 paraglider certification beforehand.
Paramotoring training is VERY different from paragliding training with regards to: rules, clubs, organization, and especially: continued education.
Get your P3 and take a SIV course before strapping on a 45lb motor and all sorts of camera gear. And for goodness sake folks fly with a reserve or two reserves! Yes, you can get a front-mount and a side-mount reserve nowadays! Dual reserves!
Side note: the campfire is a great place for these discussions, but never on launch. We try our best to keep things positive on launch.
Lastly, if you are on launch with other pilots, please keep your doubts to yourself. I’ve seen other pilots cast such a shadow of doubt regarding launch conditions that 2/3rds of the pilots refuse to take off. Meanwhile, myself and 3 other pilots launched without any problems and had incredible flights too. I watched 8 pilots hike BACK DOWN THE MOUNTAIN disappointed and frustrated on that particular day because one pilot was such an outspoken naysayer: “naw man, these conditions are whack. Nobody should be launching in this. I’m not flying. I’m not flying. Are you flying? Cuz, I’m not flying. I’m gonna hike down. You’d be crazy to launch in this.”
Me 5 minutes later flying over launch: 🫡
It’s important to know your own abilities and limits though. Fixed wing might be a better form of aviation for some folks.
Don’t let other people’s mishaps deter you from pursuing your own passions in life.
If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading all that!
Please find a local paraglider/hangglider launch near you and go hang out for the day! Spectate, assist if requested, and find out where the next ground-school/kiting day is happening. Then go to that! 😁🤘🏼
USHPA.org is a great resource too

Orthopedic and neuro surgeons are heroes in my eyes. Those people bring so much of someone's old life back after awful injuries, it's just amazing. My injury wasn't nearly as severe as yours, but I shattered the right side of my pelvis in a wind sports accident. About an inch from breaking the ilium all the way off, dislocated hip, cracked acetabulum, and some other smaller breaks. It's wild, but it didn't hurt when I hit the ground, it was just really loud. It hurt after because I got yanked and dropped 3 more times, but the initial part was just a loud bang.

I don’t fly, I’m 86 and still have learning on my bucket list, so I know how addictive paramotoring can be. Hear this…I’ve never flown, am old but still have the flying fever! Im very impressed with your recovery already. The fact you fell 80+ feet and are still alive is a miracle in its own right but the fact you are likely going to make a 90% recovery is unreal. I am a man of God and I believe in miracles. I will be praying for you and your family.
Lord, we thank You for Your mercy and grace over Anthony. We lift him up to You, asking for continued healing and strength in his recovery. Bless his medical team with wisdom and guide their hands in every procedure. Surround Anthony and his family with Your peace and comfort. Amen.

Man I’ll be honest I have strayed away from watching the crash purposely because it is so hard for me as a fairly new paramotor pilot. I’ve been tagged in almost every post videos of your crash. It’s these videos that really hit home for me in seeing your character through it all. You’re so blessed man and have so many great supporters!!! Much love!

I wish I never saw your video because I really wanted to fly a paramotor, but you made me see what the consequences of a crash could be.

I commented on the other video but I felt the need to say something here after wathcing this one. As someone who has died and been recessitated three times I can tell you from experience, it wasnt a dream. He was there. While I was in a coma for 6.5 months and died three times, my mother passed away and I saw her . I distinctly remember the hug she gave me was so tight it hurt. I can still feel it years later. This life is not the end, it's only the beginning for us. Live your life, make sure the people you love know that you love them. Make sure the last words they hear from you are I love you. Every one in this world has a day and time and it could be at any moment. Don't hide. Live.

I was in the ICU for 3 days after a guy pulled in front of me while going about 60mph on my motorcycle. Snapped my left lower leg, tore my right Achilles, collapsed one lung, got a major concussion and had a seizure as they were trying to fix my lung. To this day I don't know how I survived that incredibly hard impact other than God's protection. Two years ago I bought one of my favorite bikes and ended up selling it later that year, there are just too many things out of our control to be risking our lives like this, especially if we have a family to take care of. I wish you the best

So glad to see you recovering, and welcome back home!
Here in Japan when I got injured paragliding, shattering a vertebra, before the surgery they only gave me NSAIDs (and a nurse forgot to open rhe IV containing the acetaminophen anyway, so effectively nothing for the first few hours haha), and after surgery to insert the hardware the best they gave me was tramadol. For the second surgery 18 months later to remove the hardware I only got NSAIDs. It wasn't fun! Japan has a fear of stronger painkillers, and a strong culture of "gaman" (toughen it up)...
Take care and good luck on your road to recovery!

To be honest, when I first saw the video it was due to a joke that was going around because of the whole "I CRASHED MY FLYING MACHINE" thing being a bit of an outrageous statement. I laughed at the words, but not at your accident. The way you've been able to recover so quickly, the true love shown from your wife, and your dedication to telling us your story and showing us how to keep spirits high is incredible. I hope your recovery continues to be stable, quick and that you'll be able to get back to being yourself again soon. (I for one don't want you to go back on your FLYING MACHINE, but hey, we can't take away someone's passion.)

Great video. Thank you for sharing! I have no doubt that your kids have helped you get better quicker. They have a power to affect us in ways that people without kids just can’t understand. I’m glad you have such a great support system. Keep it up. Stay strong.

I'm so glad you're doing better man. I broke down when you were talking about waking up in the hospital not being able to move and being confused as to why you were there, because I can relate to that when I was hospitalized in 2020 for 2 weeks. Can't wait to see you fly again!
