      @@benzracer lol... while that doesn't sound so farfetched, they'd be making real fools of themselves to try that. look at when apple sued over the rounded rectangle shape of smartphones... wasn't too pretty... if it were actually an original design [which i doubt], that's one thing. but this basically is the common padlock and they all operate approximately the same and offer the about same level [or lack] of security. more realistic is that this would be grounds for a patent nullification.
      in any case, they have nothing to gain. hell, the lock isn't even practical besides for education because it's comically large and you could defeat it just by dropping a lit match or two on it. [among other ways that involve playing on the fact wood is easy to damage] i would hope they have at least sense enough to realize that. they already have enough trouble with certain youtubers demonstrating time and time again how insecure the average lock really is...XD

      @@ETXAlienRobot201 While i agree with you that likely it doesn't violate any patents and is widely impractical, that doesn't mean it's legally fine. He took direct measurements from a padlock to make it so him making money off it (especially if he made more of them) would be legally questionable. That said for the same reason game publishers don't go after youtubers for copyright (bad press and minimal reward) he is unlikely to be sued.

    I'd say nothing under 10k$ though it's hard to know exactly how many hours you worked on this. for art projects the best way to price is (your hourly rate)*(hours worked on the project)+(materials cost)+(shipping costs)
    never price your hourly rate under minimul hourly wage obviously.. that should give you a rough expectation of what to charge at minimum for it.
    For novelty art items such as this it should be notred that up-pricing can be a selling point to wealthy elites too.

      No! He's not selling a peace of furniture!! That is art! I would add a nother 25% to the hourly rate, and then at least double the summ based on your formula.
      And the buyer has to take care of the shipping himself.

    $10k would be my minimum price, but honestly i would set it higher. You are already at 5 figures so don't be shy. How many hours have you put into this? 500? So around $15'000 with an hourly rate of 30$ seems fair. If you wanna go for a cool number you can do the whole $12'345
    If you think its too expensive and only a millionaire will ever buy it, go with the memes and make it $69'420 and hope a certain guy sees it.

  • @andy4an
    @andy4an Před 4 lety +7

    minimum cost would be time and materials...
    * time being the total hours of planning and building together, with a reasonable hourly rate for your expertise and location
    * materials should not assume scraps, but buying new from a local store.
    did you say how many hours? if not, i"ll assume 50 hours of design at 60$/hour, and 150 hours of construction at 40$/hour, and 500$ in materials. that puts us to 9500$ minimum, and I have very low confidence in those first 4 assumptions... but that's just to get our minimum.
    assuming this is a custom commission, it's fitting that this would have a premium price to ensure that the craftsman is well compensated. I could see a quote being 12,000$-14,000$.
    but that isn't what this is. what's the demand for a product like this? this was built without a customer in mind. so the people that are interested should not be expected to pay time and materials, since they are going to offer what it's worth to them, not the cost to manufacture. it's worth is determined by what someone will pay for it. if Abus wasn't interested, and if you couldn't find an eccentric millionaire, what you can actually get for it might be closer to 4,000$-7,000$? 4k might be optimistic, but every time i see one of these videos and an auction follows, I'm surprised by the numbers I see. it seems there is actually a market for wacky and unique things like this.
    i hope someone is really excited by this, and offers a fair price.

    • @juliuslvl30
      @juliuslvl30 Před 4 lety

      ‘Wacky and unique’, this guy made an art piece to put it simple. Lock companies would easily pay $10k for this, i have no doubt

  • @sirabdullahsgroupcoaching1729

    Put it on online auction. This is not just a simple lock. This is hard work only a carpenter can imagine.

  • @superiorshooter
    @superiorshooter Před 4 lety +7

    Regarding your question of how much the lock is worth monetarily: You're thinking about this the wrong way. You should put all the ABUS branding on the lock(don't upload any of that footage to CZcams), which is the lock's manufacturer your model is designed after. Then contact ABUS and see if they'd be interested in buying it. It's an old German company. They'd probably put it up on display somewhere. Perhaps you could CNC their logo on to the key and lock itself.
    If not, switch the branding to another lock manufacturer, Master Lock for example. See if they want to buy it... Hell, this is the kind of sh*t Jimmy DiResta gets paid to do and it wouldn't even need to be functional.

      No trademark infringement here at all.
      I’d bet if you took a Master lock apart you’d see the same type of internals, so it would be impossible for a company to claim a trademark infringement.
      Besides, as it sits it has no company name on it.
