    For some of you baby geniuses jumping to conclusions: Huey needs to be alive for Metal Gear Solid 2 because he's a pivotal plot point in Otacon and Emma's backstory. His death is already explained in that game!
    Some of you guys need to play these games first before trying to imply I don't know the difference between Huey and Hal.

      +TheGamingBritShow Except you also keep forgetting that Kojima himself mentioned that he was going to retcon a lot of content in this game.
      It's obvious that this game wasn't meant to be a finale, even before he was fired, it was meant as a continuation.
      So would you stop insulting people who just want to have a conversation about this series that they cared for?
      You'd be surprised how many more viewers you'd get just by showing some restraint to your own opinions.

      +TheGamingBritShow The gameplay in this game, the mechanics, are awesome! But after chapter 1, the game goes to hell. The story and characters are crap. And I hate it when a game makes me repeat missions and bosses! That is a cheap scam. Great review, BritShow.

      +TheGamingBritShow I can relate to some of the stuff you say, but as to the matter of Huey, he was exiled, he could have made it back to the USA, and even if he died, Meryl could die in metal gear solid and she appeared in an important part of metal gear solid 4.
      Even though that, I respect your opinion you are in every right to be dissapointed, even so, one has to admit that the game did a lot of things right... even if the ending is shit without the dvd that explains wtf happened to Eli... sorry for any grammar error, I am not from an english speaking country.

      the game isn't finished and to make it longer they just add loading screens, unskipable helicopter rides,and a long and baron travel to each outpost. hell they even deploy you farther from your objective to pad out the game! i really can't see how konami put so much money into the game. like did 90% of the budget go to keither sutherland cuz it definitely wasn't worth it...I'M SERIOUS IS THIS FAR CRY 5????(oh wait at least far cry can make a good villian.)

      lol dude i'm playing assassins creed syndicate and it did the whole "manage your own army" thing 10 times better than TPP
      first they actually have you working with people who have a personality. second when you buy something can use it right then and there instead of wait on the "development time"(yes peace walker had the same mechanic but it didn't feel like something that was leading to a microtransaction.) the missions are usually not to far away and even if they are theres a bunch of stuff that you can do inbetween the travel there. they let you fast travel without having to go to a certain location to fast travel. oh and you can play as the character they marketed to you 5 minutes into the game instead of crawling on the freaking floor for 1 hour!and they fixed the amount of time it takes to climb high buildings with a grappling hook. Basically they don't waste your time.
      Assasins creed made a better open world stealth action game than the MGS franchise?

      Completely disagree. They removed A LOT of mechanics from MGS 4, other mechanics survived but was completely simplified(playing dead for example), and even Ground Zeroes did some things better than The Phantom Pain. Reflex mode has absolutely no place in the game and the same level of depth that's expected from a Kojima game isn't as apparent in TPP. Compared to other games, TPP is definitely top notch, but the bar has been set way too high by Kojima himself so I'd be lying if I said it wasn't disappointing.

      @MRGilD0 Před 9 lety +15

      +Aaron Burch it still makes it unnecessary though :P I'm not too familiar with Devil Trigger, but reflex mode simply goes against what past MGS games have done. For the first time in MGS you are actually rewarded for getting caught. Whereas before you can automatically lose the game if you get caught, depending on the difficulty, now you get a good 10 or so seconds to kill the ten or so people that saw you before they can alert their comrades to your shenanigans. I'm not gonna stop people from using it, and I may even turn it on in a future playthrough, just to see how much I can do in that timeframe, but it should have no place in MGS especially by default.

    One thing I never liked about MGSV (and Peace Walker) is how the game is mission-based. I'm speaking specifically about the fact that the way you progress through it is by selecting a mission off of a list of missions and then flying over the the start zone. I feel like one of the reasons the previous MGS games felt tight in terms of narrative wasn't only due to the abundance of cutscenes, but because of the fact that you initially set out to do something and then the game just... took off from there. Having to fly to and from Mother Base really took me out of the story. It didn't engage me.

    • @theomnigamer9177
      @theomnigamer9177 Před rokem +17

      Peace Walker had the excuse of being on the PSP. The mentality was since it was mission based and portable, people could finish a mission while on the bus or on the subway train (or any vehicular transportation). It also helped since the maps in Peace Walker were bite sized, so it helps that the missions with missions if they are shorter than others. I can’t give that excuse to V though.
      Also Peace Walker is definitively the best Metal Gear game since you get to fight Monster Hunter Bosses.

    • @REDEEMERWOLF
      @REDEEMERWOLF Před rokem +8

      It was mission based in peace walker, but it had the MGS DNA in it as the main missions would pick up from where the last left off and would all take place on the same map in Costa Rica, like a shadow Moses, or a big shell.
      MGSV is when everything became disconnected between the missions and messed everything up.

      All they needed to do to solve that problem is having BB being the only playable character in the story missions, and the MB soldiers for the optional missions. Ya the game had so much potential but they pushed it out too early. Honestly even if they gave Kojima more time and budget Idk if it would of turned out any better. All the grindy peace walker mechanics where all leading to this then you add a open world which usually tend to be grindy because it takes alot of time and money to bring a world to life. I think kojima kind of started to lose his way to peace walker like I like that game a lot but mostly for the narrative I didn't like all the mother base stuff it's a waste of time also I don't care for sponge bosses they are very uncreative compared to the rest of the series.

    • @Spillow-C
      @Spillow-C Před 9 měsíci

      some leaks says that the reason why the open world is so flat is the ps3 hardware, konami wanted more sales, kojima and his team wanted it to be a next game, a ps4 game, in order to put STUFF on screen, the game is always so empty if you think about it, motherbase is a joke too, it could have been a war game with a lot of dynamic events, the stuff and space to make it possible is all there, all the vehicles immaginable and gadgets, its a mega sandbox that is so underused.

    Don't let all the dislikes get you down. I don't see how this is the weakest review so far, when a lot of official reviews that get praised don't actually explain anything about why something is good or bad. Your review at least did. But I'd have to say that games like MGS2 aren't *that* amazing gameplay-wise, never were.
    Anyway, there is no story, it's just setpiece after setpiece of uninteresting crap, with a bunch of cassette tapes explaining historical events that are frankly irrelevant to the plot. Some tapes do explain story-related things, but there's just no interaction between characters, and the amount of superfluous and dry info is astounding. Playing cassette tapes while sneaking is just distracting... and it's no fun to be stuck listening to a tape in a menu, with no interesting visuals. There is no character development, and like you said, Ocelot is not Ocelot. I don't have any reason to like the characters, because they don't truly bond with Snake. They're one-dimensional and not likable. It's hard to find the right words for this.
    I'm not sure exactly why, but I don't enjoy the gameplay much either. I know I said old MGSes weren't epically amazing, but this is much worse. It's better from a technical standpoint, but there's so much freedom, there's no way to fuck up, there's no challenge of any kind. That means you don't have to experiment with gear either. And there's no way to really plan anything because most likely there's an enemy hidden behind a wall somewhere anyway... turning the game into some on-the-fly action shit.
    It feels like there's no atmosphere anywhere. There are no tactics involved, all you need to do is walk somewhere where there's few enemies, take down the one or two that are there, go extract/kill a target, go back the way you came, extract. And you repeat that in almost every mission. Maybe the problem is that there is no real 'level design'... each level plays the same. Many of the things you can do aren't fun and serve exactly the same purpose.
    The game's just... meh.

    • @sikViduser
      @sikViduser Před 8 lety +12

      +Chameleonard "...there is no real 'level design..." That's exactly it. • @NetherlandsFirst
      @NetherlandsFirst Před 8 lety +8

      Yeah. Anyway, it's hard to explain it all. It just feels like that's exactly why open world games are so hard to criticize sometimes: because there's no clearly definable gameplay, and the story is often broken up so much that it becomes hard to even remember what it was about, and so on. You can argue MGS5 is a disservice to MGS fans because it strays from the franchise. And I'd completly agree with you. But straying from the franchise doesn't make it a bad game, much less horrible.

      I didn't realise those games had an arch developed for them for over 30 years.. Cause they don't. Maybe that is fine for those games but MG is not that type of game. All games don't have to be the same, but Metal Gear solid (even this one) wasn't meant to be a game just for gameplays sake. Kojima tries to tell a story even in this one, it's just so poorly done.

      ***** Sure, but it still invalidates the point you made of "gameplay not being a goal in itself". A game can be great with 0 story.
      MGS V didn't do great in the story department, but in the end it was still a good game. Perhaps the worst MGS game, perhaps not even a good MGS game, but still a very good game in the overall industry imo.
      It certainly did not deliver in giving an "end" to the franchise as some were expecting. But in the end it still lets you live a part of the MGS universe and fills in some blanks. Consider it a spin-off if you must.

    I will stand by the fact that the jeep ride with Skullface is one of the most awfully executed moments in any video game I've ever played.
    Also, fans of the "gameplay" of Phantom Pain probably are mistaking the game mechanics, which are admittedly great.
    But the gameplay itself, as mentioned in the video, are so mundane and awful. 90% of the game is doing random tasks for no story reason at all, and could be in any random action stealth game on the market.

      Yet Kojima Productions created MGS5s stealth/action gameplay and game mechanics that reign supreme to this day. Therefore, saying the gameplay/mechanics could be in any old game seems disingenuous, with a lack of appreciation for what the devs accomplished.
      I love every MGS title and understand this games' divisiveness within the community. However, I'm glad they ditched the hours long cutscenes and codec calls interrupting gameplay. The main focus was the gameplay, and imo they nailed it almost perfectly. I would have loved to have seen some more linear designed levels thrown into the mix though. Overall, it is my favorite MGS game for many of the reasons people dislike it. It's one of my favorite games ever made!

      I so far have given this game a 4 out of 10. The whole MGS series is brilliant, but MGS5 was the only one that was poorly made and it sucked in many areas. I didn't feel that MGS spark like i did with the others. The game itself felt more like copy and paste. I didn't like the fact you couldn't carry all your weapons and create chaos like you could in the previous ones. Specially now that you have to pay GMP with the bandanna etc.
      The missions where not always that enjoyable, specially the 2nd part of the game, i mean seriously, the same mission, just a little updated with the difficulty. They should have given us something else. I felt ripped off most of the time because i just felt like i was doing the same thing.
      The buddies are ok, i've never used D-Walker, i don't really use Quiet that much anymore, most of the missions, it was me and D-Dog.
      Online FOB's are beyond shit. If you happen to build one and you don't play the game that much, expect someone to steal everything or kill your men. Konami should have a permanent insurance on your base so if you do end up being attacked and you happen to lose which i've lost a few, everything you had i.e men, resources etc wont be lost, they take a copy of what you had and if any of your men where killed, instead of you actually losing them, they should be sent to sick bay to recover.
      Another thing i didn't like is that if you want all the good weapons etc, you pretty much need FOB's to get to level 100, specially if you want the extra benefits under the S rank on certain platforms like medical and R&D.
      It would have been nice to have civilians on the map, that way if you see them being abused by the Russians etc, you could help them out like you get in Farcry 4 from time to time.
      I still play the game, i want to get all the trophies, after that, i will sell it. I got all S ranks on the missions, but so far, it gets very boring these days D:. MGS3 is my number 1 game, then MGS4, MGS1, MGS2 and of course, MGS5.
      I do hope Kojima is able to make another one, just improved and more enjoyable

    Worst part about MGS V is the Clash of Clans style timers to develop things. Why!? Why are these here!? There is literally no reason for these to be here, nor for them to be days long!
    Ok, so I get enough engineers in the right departments to be able to develop the weapon. I get enough materials to develop the weapon... And now I have to wait 6 hours? Save for some arbitrarily "special" items, none of the timers will tick down unless the game is open.
    When I got to that part where you save the kids, I didn't have the kid-friendly balloon. So I got all the resources to develop the balloon, then went AFK for half an hour. There is absolutely no reason for that to be a thing in *any* game at all.

      It's very understandable from a financial standpoint. MGSV had a budgeg of what, 80 million? That's the number that you'd be looking at with a remake of an older title, and Metal Gear isn't the type of brand that will earn you hundreds of millions with a new release, so why bother using all those resources in a costly game, when you can use them on something more profitable? Unfortunately it means that Metal Gear and Metal Gear: Solid Snake will almost certainly never get the remakes that those games definitely deserve.

    "You too have known loss, and that loss torments you still. You hope hatred might someday replace the pain, but it never goes away. It makes a man hideous, inside and out. Wouldn't you agree? We both are demons. Our humanity won't return."
    -Skull Face

    • @bobdotexe
      @bobdotexe Před 8 lety +8

      +kabeltelevizio it's fairly straight forward, in short. "we both have *lost* something, for me it's my childhood and my country, for you it's pretty much everything you've worked to create, along with many you've know and loved.
      so people like us often chose revenge as that may seem like the most logical course of action, you find something to * hate* weather it be the true cause of your misfortune or not, you'll be willing to do anything to escape the *pain* and helplessness that the loss has caused you. but in the end, even if you get your revenge the very pain you were trying to replace *never goes away*. and instead of everything getting better, because you decide to live only for hatred you be come bitter, it affects your mind, body, and soul.
      We both have walked this path, and have become changed by it, and there's no way for us to go back to where we were."
      It's not really a new concept, it's basically one of those "we are the same!" moment! that bosses often decide to throw out.
      But done in Kojima's trademark often overly dramatic 'cinematic' dialogue, it can take a while to get used to, but I find indirect statements like this to often be a better way of saying it, as you can to a point interpret it your own way.

    • @bobdotexe
      @bobdotexe Před 8 lety +1

      +kabeltelevizio "..but hatred replacing the pain? That should be the other way around. "
      not really, again, the revenge aspect. that can be created hatred. hatred that was not there before.
      I hate pulling the 'it's a metaphor card' but that's the only thing that would really explain it.
      I finished the game a while ago, so sorry if my quotes are off by a bit.
      But I believe he uses language and culture interchangeably. for example, I'm trying to learn Japanese, my native language is English, while leaning another Latin based language would be fairly straight forward, just memorize some words, a bit on syntax and done! Learning a Language from a very different culture is very different.
      Not just because of the vastly different alphabet and phonics, but also because the language has quite a bit of the culture ingrained into it, while we just have Mr. Mrs. Sir, etc, they actually have prefixes for people's names based on your social position relative to them, while we'd just use 'Sir' to be respectful to any male, even ones of our same age or younger, they have something called honorifics, where you would never refer to some one you met at a store with the same name suffix as your boss.
      While that may not apply to all languages, Language still a powerful thing.
      And while I'm not going to claim to be an expert on diplomatic relations in the 80's, I'd imagine more then just English was being taught. that may have been the official report, but it's also possible that they were trying to 'modernize' the places as well, introducing them to technology and other things that were more popular where the English speakers came from.
      The culture aspect works really well with the whole "convert a nation to a different tongue" thing, as last I checked most people don't forget their old language when they learn a new one.
      so it would make more sense for it to be a culture spread, then a language thing.
      So why not just say american culture? Kojima is a troll.
      ...or maybe he always saw language and culture as one in the same? :-/
      anyway, here's the final peace of evidence.
      he speaks of a language crisis, or culture crisis.
      This is likely because at a very young age when he would be developing his identity, he was exposed to multiple different cultural views "
      With each new post, my masters changed, along with the words they made me speak." And with no parents to use as a form of reference. he had no anchor to base for determining who he was. he had nothing to define him, much like snake lost everything after lousing the boss, and mother base.
      Hmm, this would actually make an interesting video, I'm gonna have to read into this a little more,
      but still keep replying with your thoughts.

    • @bobdotexe
      @bobdotexe Před 8 lety +1

      +kabeltelevizio "but his method was something someone who hasn't left his room for a decade would invent. "
      yes, kojima is no stranger to 'just go with it' in the since department, and yes, future generations may forget the language, and overtime if not used, the speaker may forget some of it, but the whole idea of conversion is to change something from one state to another "from 1 to 0" with just language the person them selves would not change they's be added to, but with culture adjustment, their very live style and customs would change, and I think the main reason he was going after English is because it's the most popular language on the planet (if you count those who speak it as a second language)
      He spoke of zero using English to unite the world (under his control) think tower of babel from the Old Testament, Buy destroying English, not only can he stop zero's plan, and kill zero, but he thinks by eliminating the language 'forced' on so many he can make it so we have multiple languages (cultures) again true diversity, by embracing out 'past present and future(?)
      he says it's "not an ethnic cleanser, it's a liberator to free the world from zero"
      basically he just wants to free the world, you know by killing billions.
      The two main things I take from this are,
      1. He wants to stop zero's plan
      2. he wants 'sans Lingua franca' no language bridge
      So I guess it is more about language then culture,
      I got more ideas about #2 on the way, but need to do a little more digging, tell me what you think

      check out 'Metal Gear Solid V - Skull Face Origins, Master Plan, & Analysis! (Ground Zeroes)' by YongYea for that.
      I spent more time working through the monlogue, and I think I picked up on a few things, in short Zero's plan is the basis of the system from Mgs2,
      Controlling the world through words, with information control. skull face plans to break countries a part by first getting rid of the common language, destroying them to a point, but when they seek to rebuild, he will provide each with a metal gear, equalizing their power. in his mind this way no country will have more power or influence then another. And he claims this will bring peace.
      He's already taken care of zero, now he sets to rest the world. not to destroy or rule it.
      Anyway there's a bit more to it then that, I just finished my video that breaks down the whole monologue if you're interested:

    The problem with mgs v is it feels like a grindy modern open world filled with padding and even mobile game mechanics *Cough Cough* mother base bs. The core gameplay is the best of the series but I think maybe they should of stuck to the roots more with the bosses and maybe made it more of a semi open world with less padding and a more linear feel. The story is also the most important part of these games and they fumbled that bad. Bigger does not mean better we have seen this countless times. I'd rather have a 20 hour game of great content then a 40 to 100 hour game with filler content. People say this game gives more freedom to do things how you want but who cares it's boring as hell. The whole point of the game is to be fun I don't want to have to make my own fun. Most people don't put 400 hours into a game like this and have to skill to do some crazy john wick run. The game feels like torture after 10 hours for me because all these open worlds are poorly designed crap. The older games were much better because they were more linear and focused. They would of been much better off just making bigger linear maps and sticking to the original formula open world doesn't make it better. Mgs V is clearly not even finished Idk why people hype shit like this up it's not that good.

    You know something? Most of your points are correct. Some, are up for discussion.
    However, I truly do NOT believe this game had mediocre gameplay.....FAR from it. You see.....
    This game is honestly the biggest and most expansive Metal Gear game out there. I never spent over 100 hours into any single Metal Gear game I've ever played. And I've played all of them. (Including the MSX ones) The open world isn't "Empty and lifeless"........ In Afghanistan, it's full of animals like sheep, bears, mice, zebras, and many more. If you just stay on the main road while roaming the entire game, then of course you won't see any animals and have fun killing/extracting them. I'll admit Africa was sort of lacking the wide variety of animals Afghan had, but it had many beautiful sights (On your first mission there, that area is so pretty in the morning, as well as the waterfall near the mansion) and enemy bases to conquer (The mansion, and other two scattered throughout the map) that more than makes up for it. Also, the game has so many weapons and things to unlock it's crazy. Let's not forget all of the customization options you got for the weapons as well!
    I am 500 hours in and only 62% complete. Wanna know what I've done for a good 200 hours or so? Use my imagination. Yeah, you heard me correctly. I never had a Metal Gear game that was so big I could use my imagination for just about any kind of situation. That's one of the key visions Kojima/Konami had for this game. To take full control of Venom Snake, and guide him through his journies as Big Boss prior to Metal Gear 1. In previous entries, the story took more control of you then the gameplay. In this game, it's the reverse way around. And I honestly appreciate it for that. I can't even name all of the fun moments I had playing this game, both during main missions and on free-roam. All the amazing close-calls I had and helicopter/bear fights I've had, it's beyond amazing in terms of scale. In fact, I still do not know the entire map by heart.
    I mean, the game puts you into a world where there are endless possibilities. The game tries to capture a sense of realism that I haven't seen in any game, ever. I mean, you are given the option to approach enemy outposts/bases in so many different ways. You could try and make it ultra-realistic, by turning off Reflex mode/Marking and use lower grade weapons, with really good camo on. Or if you have good enough weapons, put all the modes on and breeze through a base. Or even go in there guns blazing, nothing in this game is impossible. That's what I love about it. Also, I don't even mind the whole demon points thing. I actually sort have grown to like it alot. I have two individual saves for normal snake and demon snake to keep it evened out. It might sound dumb, but it's so much funner to go out as Demon Snake and fight bears, or replay old missions with him topless and that big ass horn sticking out of his head.... Riding the furicorn with demon snake is such a badass sight.
    I guess what I'm trying to say, is the game is all about forming your own story/recreation of Big Boss. Hence why we have such a huge, expansive game on our hands to do anything we want with. The overall vision of the game is for YOU to make the story out of it. It's given a skeletal structure, with the whole XOF revenge, Two Outbreaks, and ending twists. It heavily relies on YOU to take the challenge, and approach it in your own, special way. To fill the rest. For me, it was a mixture of following the story that was given, and relating my feelings into the game as well. I mean when you had to SPOILERS Kill your own men in the second outbreak END OF SPOILERS, I felt like crying. When I was playing, I lowered my gun so many times and said to myself, "Oh god, no no no", before doing the deed. The ending twist that SPOILERS You are the medic, and serve as Big Boss' phantom END OF SPOILERS didn't annoy me in the slightest. The ending summed up everything I needed to feel. Just like the medic, I may not have been Big Boss, but I experienced/seen Big Boss' missions from MGS3 and so on. And from this game, I experience my own journey since I am both, myself AND Big Boss, and am given a big, expansive world to do anything in. Just knowing that (SPOILERS)Venom Snake is supposed to be ME (End of Spoilers), makes the ending better in a sense. Because it basically means that he felt what I felt, since he's me, and replaying the story missions...... You can see he clearly did. You embarked on your own journey of Revenge, with all of the characters you came to know and love from MGS3 and Peace Walker. You made the calls on more than one occasion, and every now and then Venom Snake took lead and brought you into the right direction.
    Sure it may not have been what most people wanted, I am more than pleased with the experience I have had with this game. My story is pretty much over, but I still play to form new stories out of my own imagination... Like for instance, there was a time I just decided to kill everyone and rank up demon points, until I got demon snake. Fastest way to do that is use the motolov on every solder in the "Retake the Platform" mission... Including the prisoners who were your own men. I made Venom Snake dive into madness. The story didn't, I did, and in the end, the game delivered Demon Snake to me for doing those evil deeds. I even developed my own little story for it too, heh. Who cares if it isn't canon? It's still fun. But at the end of the day, that horn does grow out to be Demon size until it finally just comes out. (Whether that happened before MG1 or during it is unclear, it likely happened before)
    The game truly does give you a wide, expansive amount of freedom. And that is again, why I love the gameplay aspect of the game so much. I will agree that the story was very, very misleading from what we were advertised in all of the trailers. But at the end of the day, I am happy with what I got. A huge, polished game, full of things to do and endless possibilities. It more than makes up for the small amount of story given. MGSV may not be my favorite Metal Gear game, but it is definitely game of the year for me. And I will continue to play it every day as I have, for a very long time.

      I agree with every single word. The gameplay in MGS V is some of the most fine tuned I've ever seen in a video game. Everything from mission objectives that don't hold your hand to the weapon balance. I'm a fan of MGS, I started with Twin Snakes back in Gamecube and since then I've played almost all the games and I can safely say that MGS V is my third favorite game in the Metal Gear series.
      It's a complete joy to explore Afghanistan and Africa. The freedom is staggering. Like you said, you can either go 100% stealth or guns blazing. And the Reflex Mode is optional for crying out loud!
      It also might be one of the more challenging games I've played in recent years. Because of the open world the guard AI is superb and their movement really unpredictable so the tension of stealth is greater than in any MGS game I've played before. For example when I had to sneak to the mansion where the Code Talker was, I was constantly sweatting, being nervous and concentrating on every single guard movement even with DD on my side.
      There are couple of missions that felt just bullshittingly hard like Traitor's Caravan, I HATE THAT MISSION, and some missions where there were like 20 guards at one area and Snake needed to find one escaped prisoner under a time limit without being spotted... those moments caused me to scream with anger and frustration, but holy shit the feel of accomplishment when I finally did it.
      I don't judge games based on story. Even if it's one of the most story driven game series. I value gameplay over story in any game, so it should be easy enough to understand why I love this game so much. While MGS V is not a Game of the Year for me (that goes for Fallout 4) it's one of the best games I've ever played.

How much fun can you get out of that, about 2mins worth of "haha look at that I just tied a balloon to a sheep look at it fly". Sorry but I didn't spend £50 on a metal gear game to hunt fu*king sheep and mice! This game is terrible and all the pretty graphics and scenery in the world can't disguise that.

I was hopeful that MGS5 wouldn't continue down that path, but it wasn't just more of the same: it was worse. I have no idea what happened here but I honestly think Kojima got a little full of himself and started throwing every idea he had into MGS5. I never thought it was a good idea to have complete creative control over a project because it means that there's no one around to check your bad ideas. Don't get me wrong, Kojima is a visionary video game maker, but even he can make some bad decisions from time to time.

The tapes also make it so that there's little-to-no interaction between characters. Snake is heard speaking in, what, 2 of them? As a long time Metal Gear Solid fan, I have to say this video brings out a lot of good points about the shortcomings of MGSV.
    In my honest opinion, this was the most forgettable title out of the whole franchise, and the kids who are hating on this video are the ones that aren’t capable of grasping the deeper levels of comprehensive video game story writing, core gameplay mechanics, level pacing, and appreciation for what actually put Metal Gear Solid on the map.
    If you enjoyed MGS5, then that’s great! No hate there, but a lot of you need to understand WHY loyal MGS fans(I’m talking about those starting from 1998 MGS for the PS1 to MGS2/3/4 for the PS2&3) would be disappointedly in MGS5.
    If you can’t understand why, maybe Metal Gear Solid 3 should’ve been your first game........... then you’ll fucking know why. Or should’ve been Metal Gear Solid 1 as your first perhaps...........once you play those games first and then play MGS5, come back to this video and you’ll see that this video has A LOT OF TRUTHS to it.
    But it probably wouldn’t work that way anymore because MGS5 was most likely your first Metal gear solid game, so playing MGS3 afterwards probably would’ve felt more lackluster because it’s a 2004 game that feels “old” “lost with the times”. From reading the comments of the salty, it seems like most of the downvoters are the “I’VE nEvEr PLaYed MeTaL GEAR SOLid NoR HEARd Of THIs SeRiES b4 UNtiL MGs5 Bcuz it NEW and Omergerrd it’s The BEST GaME eVar BuT I doNT CaRe AbOUT tHe olDEr MGS gaMe cuz tHeYre oLdddd aNd OutdaTed ewww. ! FUCK THIS VIDEO FOR TRASHING MGS5 HOW DARE YOUU”
    If you’re a true MGS fan, you’d revisit and play the old titles even though they
    might feel more lacking in control dynamics because you understand these titles were actually revolutionary during its time.
    These are just my opinions.
    Best storyline goes to MGS1, MGS3, MGS4, MGS2, then MGS5 in that respective order.

    Nailed it. Kojima has a long legacy of horrible story-telling. Great point about not touching on Zero's involvement...they just kind of explain that away by saying XOF was a rogue faction and that Zero lost control of Cipher and went missing anyway...so which is it, Kojima? Is Zero the mastermind and this took place during some kind of weird coup within his organization? If so, then this whole game is just a side-story. All the relationships are untouched...psycho mantis, liquid, they even reference that Volgin could have had some relation to the Man on Fire...but then you never hear anything about it. Skull Face's explanation and back-story in general is just a pathetic waste of what could have been an interesting villain. Thanks for the honest review.

      I mean a lot of that stuff was cut when Kojima got fired. But the game basically makes it blatantly clear that Big Boss is not a sympathetic character. The graveyard scene in 4 is deepened by the fact that we know that Big Boss has done terrible things and that is the moment he regrets it. It also expands on the idea that Zero "lost control", which was mentioned in 4. It shows that Zero didn't turn evil, but rather tried his best to do what he believed in but lost control of everything and nearly destroyed the world. "He has no idea he nearly brought the world to the brink of destruction". So yeah, it does add to the story; but the cuts affect it deeply.

    Big Boss was never a villain. You have to look at the storyline as a whole. The Boss didn't defect, it was her cover and Naked Snake had to kill her in order to make that story and the events of MGS3 stay secret. That is why he left and rejected the title "Big Boss" and was shown respecting her at the grave because he knew she was a true hero that let herself be branded a traitor to save her country. Portable Ops was just kind of a filler by a third party trying to explain some of the other character connections (like Grey Fox) to Big Boss. Peace Walker explains how Big Boss finally gets closure and takes up the title and starts working toward the world he thought The Boss wanted and to stop Major Zero from destroying it by running a completely different interpretation of what The Boss wanted. MGSV fills in the story of Big Boss and Venom Snake which tells the story of how Venom Snake was the boss in Metal Gear (MSX) and the real Big Boss was the boss in MG: Solid Snake (MSX). That is why you get heroism points because he was never a villain, but rather just a soldier doing what he was trained to do.
    Yes, the game is short and repetitive, but I've not had any issue playing it and still enjoy it even knowing how the game plays out and ends. I had more issue with MGS4's ending of making Solid Snake go off to die than I did with the filler of Big Boss going from hero to 'villain' like the Boss had done. I felt they should have made Solid Snake should have broke the cycle by settling down with a woman and walking away from the battles and war instead of having him accept his fate and go off to die due to the FoxDie mutilation done on his body.

      Imagine the original Star Wars with Vader is the villain. Then the prequel trilogy happens that tries to explain how he became the villain, but instead treats him as a hero. Does that mean Vader isn't a villain in the original trilogy? That's the logic you're using.
      Big Boss wanted to keep the world in a perpetual state of war. He sparked wars across the globe. Then kidnapped the now orphaned children to raise them as child soldiers, only to feed them back into a state of war. He stole a large part of the energy supply putting the world into an economic crisis. He pitted Solid Snake's best friend against him. I mean for god's sake if it wasn't already obvious enough for you in those games, he brainwashed Venom into thinking he was Big Boss so he could throw him under the bus when things got hot. In what world are you living in that Big Boss is not an evil fascist tyrannical dictator? Those things seem heroic to you?
      And that's completely ignoring everything Kojima said about how this game was supposed to address his descent into madness. Straight from the horse's mouth, this game was supposed to showcase Big Boss becoming a villain.

    If they took MGS V and cut it down tremendously, gave Quiet an actual outfit from the start, and cut even MORE of the game out, it COULD be really fantastic. but they'd have to get rid of ALL the filler missions, all the chopper rides and credits sequences, get rid of all the base management stuff, get rid of the open world shoe leather, and just cut it down to maybe to like the 5 best base infiltration missions, and tie them together as one unit. kind of like how ALL PREVIOUS mgs games were, ya know. MGS Ground Zeroes is a TASTE of the masterpiece this could have been but wasn't.

The only piece of marketing I have seen was the final trailer for MGSV and it was beautiful almost made me tear up. This game has created a profound feeing in that makes me play it some more. I’m in my 5th playthrough of the game and I still haven’t get the sense of boredom. I think MGSV is a bad finale for the series if you're a diehard fan. But it's a great way to leave off in regards to the game's legacy.
      I never touched metal gear except for Revengence when I first played MGSV. I didn't know the story or the characters. But I got completely trapped in the game for weeks because of how fun and engaging the gameplay was. The story was sparse and more of a side dish to the gameplay. But it gave me enough of the metal gear flavor to have me wanting more.
      Between the gameplay getting its hooks in me, and the bits of story grabbing my curiosity, I really wanted to play the others and see what I missed.
      I normally don't enjoy retro games, but I fell in love with MGS. The gameplay was different but familiar. And the story was the main course. I ended buying a vita solely to play mgs 2, 3, portable ops, and peace walker. It was an incredible experience and now metal gear has a new heart to love on in. That wouldn't have been possible if the final outing was a grand cinematic story that hinged on points from the previous entries. Now those unfamiliar with the game have an easy entry point. And luckily a prequel to help get them ready for a trip back to MGS 1.

      As far as stealth games go this is one of the best ever made. So you understand where I'm coming from, I've played thief 2, 2014 thief, dishonored 1 and 2, deus ex, deus ex hr, mankind divided, all the splinter cells, most of the hitmans and every main mgs except for 1. I also typically ghost these games. Yes the story is flawed, but a big part of story are the themes, which this game imo has some of the best themes, and settings for a story in any game I've ever played. The game play is not tedious, in fact it's very dynamic. It's fine as a shooter but if you play it like a stealth game and try to ghost as much as the game allows, meaning no kills or knock outs, then it is very refined. The ai is great, the visuals are great, sound design is great, the controls are great, the progression is great, a lot of different gadgets comparable to a Swiss army knife, meaning items such as the box can be utilized in several different ways. There are a lot of flaws, many of which i didn't see this video address, and tbh this is already too long of response so i wont really go into it, but the lack of interior bases takes a point away from this game for me because there are typically 2 types of stealth games. Outdoor stealth games that focus on distance and camo and close quarter games that focus more on cover and routes. By not including interior environments for the most part, it limits this games potential as a stealth game because it doesn't challenge you in all aspects of the stealth genre. But imo this probably has to do with time constraints and the camera being harder to control in close quarters meaning they tailored this game for the outdoor bases. No game is perfect, I understand it can be annoying when a game gets universal praise because there are fanboys out there who can't take a single criticism of the thing they love, but this game does have a lot of merit. As for your question about the video, i disliked it because he bashed the game too hard. When you go to the extent he went, it discredits you because it comes off as more personal than objective. This was not an objective take on the game. Some of the points he made were also flat out wrong. I personally don't respect people like this youtuber because it takes a lot of money, time, and talent to even produce a game let a lone one of this quality, and it's very immature to have a take on a game like this man does, seeing as he's not the one out there grinding making games. It's like pretentious film critics. It's easy to criticize but very hard to actually contribute the art.

    Can't believe there are still so many Kojima apologists.
    Listen, I respect the man and most of his work, but he's just as much to blame as Konami for the mess that was TPP. Would the game have been better had Konami given Kojima the budget and time he requested? Yes, absolutely. But you have to realize Kojima already had 80 million dollars and 5-6 years of development time on the project, that's something 99% of devs in this world can only _dream_ of.
    Would the game have been better had Kojima kept his own ambitions in check and spent the huge amount of money and dev time he was already given in smarter ways? _Also_ yes. Besides, you can't blame Konami for the horrible writing in the game, that would've turned out all the same no matter what, and that's all on Kojima. Face it, the man's writing had been on the decline since Snake Eater, he was slowly but surely becoming the George Lucas of games.
    But of course, it's easier to just point fingers at Konami and blame them for everything (don't get me wrong though, they _are_ assholes either way), than acknowledging that someone like Kojima can make mistakes.
