Imagine being born and the top tier of travel was a horse/carriage/train.. and by the time you died.. you saw the invention of not only the car, the airplane and rockets shot into space with the very nearly complete goal of getting to the moon. Not to mention the birth of the atomic age and computers.. he got to see and experience so much.

An incredible life . I can see from some of the other comments that not everyone can understand the past and it is rather fashionable these days to condemn Churchill. However consider the alternative in 1940 .
He was a larger than life figure which nobody can afford to be today with an intrusive, vitriolic press and equally distasteful social media .

When I was a young soldier, I very surprisingly won Winstons book about WW !! in a card game organized by my unit. I was never fond of card games, but things happen, do they? In fact, nobody else wanted this book, but I did. I read it and was utterly astonished on his perception about Germany and Europe over decades. My parents for what reasons ever, never talked about their experiences in WW II. So this was how I learned about it first hand. I did much research on Winstons life and by today, I still cherish his book. It is in my bookshelf. Directly besides my desk, so I can always see it, there is the picture of Winston, also containing his words.
    "In war: resolution,
    In defeat: defiance,
    In victory: magnanimity,
    In peace: good will.”
Without him, my life would most likely have been very miserable. Today I am a free man. This is what I ow to him.
Winston and Ludwig van Beethoven became the examples of my life. This is a very fine documentary, providing much insight of a great man.

Churchill condemns himself in his own book. Over the Katyn Forest massacre. His letter to Eden shows he KNEW the Russians did it, but Churchill blamed it on the Germans. If you REALLY research into Churchill you will find he was drunk throughout the war. He was a coward. Bombing of civilians and destruction of their houses is a War Crime. There is nothing good I can say about that man. I spit on his grave.

He definitely would have. He reminds me of Ronald Reagan before there was Ronald Reagan. What is it that a lot of British and I guess Americans to that look at their history and judge it in such a Negative light. They were great men of their times. Churchill and Reagan would be disgusted with the leaderships and the state of our country of today. Reagan I think would be most upset with the media and the state of so-called journalism today. Our schools do not even teach about Thomas Paine or most of our founding fathers . I'd hate to think what Churchill would think about the British Parliament.

I was brought up in the knowledge that without the decisive and brave leadership of Sir Winston Churchill during WW2, our nation of Great Britain, the land mass of Europe and the lives we have led would have been been very different under the tyrannical rule of fascism. Churchill was a flawed human being, as we all are, and made mistakes but he also showed great courage and bravery and rose to the challenges he faced. On balance I believe him to have been a great leader and I'm sure history willl remember him as such.

Having lived my early years (age 8-14 years) through World War Two, right in the heart of Britain and experiencing every air raid over Birmingham UK, I agree that he was a good leader. Let us not however forget those "few" in the 1940 Battle of Britain (still unsung except for statues) who during that early stage, amidst much harrassment from unexpected quarters, kept their cool and saved us from Nazi rule at that vital time early on in World War Two. I believe this was the Kingpin which held together the vital and necessary courage to continue. At the same time, our courage not giving into Fascism developed our patience, perseverance, resilience, selflessness, forward thinking and attention to detail etc which is still thankfully with me to-day.

The famine was caused by a Typhoon that tore up fields, houses, roads and railroads, which made it difficult to get aid into the stricken areas. And the food that did exist were withheld by local authorities which were dominanted by the Muslims. Furthermore, many states refused to provide food aid to starving population of Bengal. Goverment officials, like Sir Chhotu Ram, the Revenue Minister of Punjab, instructed the farmers not to sell their grain to the central Government under a certain price.
Oooh, and by the way, according to economist and Noble Prize winner Dr. Amartya Sen, who witnessed the famine as a 9 year old, the famine wasn't caused by the lack of food, but inequality in the distribution. And it should be pointed out that food distribution was the responsibility of the local government.
Also, it was in this periode, from October 1942 to March 1943, it looked like the Allies were going to loose the Battle of the Atlantic. It looked as if the German U-boats were finally going sever the supply lines between Britain and North America! And yet they did what they could to alleviate the famine, but Bengal wasn't the only place that was short of food at the time. At the end of 1943, the Allies also had to provide food aid to civilians on the island of Sicily and southern Italy.

Having studied a great deal of British history (BA, MA--Texas Tech), I must say that this program was well balanced. Churchill's successes and failures were many, but they were the acts of a man who would take risks rather than hide in the shadows. His Gallipoli Campaign did not initially call for the landing of troops, and if this had been done immediately after the British Navy cleared the Straights--instead of six weeks later, it would have been a resounding success. in cost of human life, it was no more atrocious that the sacrifice of lives on the Western Front--and one of the few really original ideas of the war. I think that far from ignoring the mistreatment of the Boers during that conflict, he was kicked out of the colony for his opposition. His mastery of the English language is second to none. A speech impediment and a refusal to learn Latin (followed by brutal canings) gave him an extraordinary knowledge of the literature and use of the language. Works such as his HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLES, the two war histories, GREAT CONTEMPRARIES, and MY EARLY LIFE: A ROVING COMMISSION stand out as brilliant contributions to history and to the excellence of the English language. Best of all, he was unfailingly in favor of democracy and the will of the people. A flawed genius, to be sure, but he stands head and should above his contemporaries. Check CZcams for the movie YOUNG WINSTON. It's accurate and informative.

My Dad left Dublin for England in 1959 as a qualified carpenter and it took months for him to find a place to live, because there were so many signs that said "no blacks, no Irish and no dogs". This is honestly true.

The greatness of Great Britain is that they are always ungrateful. Britain used our soldiers as cannon fodder. More than 300,000 Indian soldiers sacrificed their life to protect Britain from German Nazi attack and your great leader expressed his gratitude by slaughtering 4.3 million people in Bengal. You people simply don't know what gratitude is all about.

Neville Chamberlains dithering during the rise of the Nazi party that got Britain into WW2. He resigned in 1940 a failure. Stalins armies and the bullets they soaked up in their Millions when Hitler got over confident and decided to fight on both the eastern and western front simultaneously, the later during the brutal Russian winter lost the Nazis the war. England by itself would be speaking German now if it wasn’t fir external help. Churchill drained resources from to Indian colonies to aid the war effort which almost bankrupted the nation caused the death of millions during the Bengal famine. Churchill love of warmongering and the limelight battle got him exiled from power for years after WW1 for being too radical. Yes I suppose he was great in terms of being bullish and a military man in the Boer war etc a possibly if he’d have been in power the Nazis may not have become such a strong force as they did in full view of the world albeit in the grips of the Great Depression of the 1930s after the stock market crash of 1929 but after his tenure it was clear Britain has lost its world dominating power to the US who couldn’t be bothered to get involved to protect the Nazis invading Britain and it was only after Pearl Harbour was bombed by Japan that they we drawn into the conflict. Not so great a legacy when you look at those facts. Anyone feels they should correct my words feel free. I’m always willing to learn. 🤙🏾

Churchill was one in ten million at least. No, he was not perfect. No human being is perfect, but think of how history may have turned out if he had not been there. Churchill’s successes cement his legacy and earn him the respect as Britain’s greatest Prime Minister. The failures or miscalculations he may have had were not so horrible as to alter the course of history toward a negative outcome. For that reason he should retain the title, thanks to the weight of his successes.

He got lucky that the Germans had little interest in invading England and much more interest in Russia due to the need of resources. 80% of WW2 was won because of Russia which is reflected in the number of casualties.
