    I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

    Great video Matt,as someone who built custom rods for 20yrs I believe the trend for longer an faster action rods is not the best in many situations. Keep up the great content.

      I couldn't agree more! Trouble is, businesses always "give the people what they want" in order to stay profitable, and right now the majority of people seem to want those longer rods. Tight lines!

    I’m glad I’m not the only one who uses shorter rods. I switched over from longer rods to the St. Croix 7ft heavy “Dock Sniper” for frog fishing. Walks the frog 🐸 so easily and skips like a dream 👌

    Hey Matt, great channel and finally found someone local! I won big bass last night on Tichigan (3.99) with a frog, but hate the rod I use and missed a handful of others. Came to CZcams for a fix and this was the first video, looks like I’m making a switch!

    I'm not a great Angler but I have found that a shorter rod does, indeed, work perfectly for me when frogging. I am a retired Senior so I don't have the muscles I need for the longer rods. Instead I can Hooksett stronger using MORE LEVERAGING and using LESS PURE MUSCLE with the shorter rod too. Softer twitching and longer pauses have been the keys to the frogging kingdom for me. I always let the fish eat it before the hooksett! Otherwise they will spit it out almost everytime. TOPWATER is my most favorite form of fishing. For this Mother's Day weekend it's frogging at Lake Apopka or driving a little 🤔 longer to Sebring. Yes, Florida has some AWESOME places 👏 for frogging. This weekend it's me-too-time 😍🙂.

    • @MattStefanFishing

    Very interesting perspective. I haven't heard it put more clearly and it makes total sense. Also of interest, I grew up in Yorkville, IL and I know of the Fox River since it ran right through Yorkville. When I was there it was a very dirty river, but has been cleaned up a lot since. Sorry to ramble, but I do appreciate your incite.

    My favorite frog rod up til now is a St.Croix MOJO 7'8" Big Crankster.
    I land a very high percentage of fish on this rod. But I do not walk frogs and never felt a need to.
    I primarily use the reel to give my frog a pop pop pause retrieve.

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  Před 3 lety

      Use what you are most confident in. That's what's most important since not all rods are right for each angler.

    Interesting that I was researching this the last few days and its like the internet read my mind!! I've been fishing a 7'3 Heavy Xtra Fast rod, but feel like it is not good of skipping frogs under trees, bushes etc. I have one of those I broke the tip off of I am going to try after seeing this video! Thanks for the info.

    Great video and good news to me since I fish out of a yak and have been thinking of getting a dedicated frog rod but nervous about whether I could handle a 7’ 4” rod. Since you make all of your own rods it might be helpful to list a few factory made rods that come close to the custom rod you described in this video.

    IMO a person preferred rod length is directly related to that persons height/wing span. I am not tall, 5ft 9in and i prefer a shorter rod in almost all situations. ? Is BASSPRO shop wuppin stick a good frog rod? Im just now starting to learn how to fish with a frog, so I dont have a dedicated froggin rod, but I know my brawler series rod from BASSPRO is a broom stick for sure. I don't know if I should use my ST Croix Mojo Bass rod( 6'8" MH Fast action or the BASS PRO brawler rod it is 6'6" MH Fast action)?
