I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

Great tip. Slack line snapping a bait works good with jerk baits and lightweight vertically falling tube jigs. Thanks for the vid, keep up the great work

New Subscriber here. I’ve loved Bass fishing for as long as I can remember. For a long time, I used a Texas rigged Culprit worm and would catch Bass all day long. That was when I was a teenager and before I joined the Navy. Fast forward 25+ years (ok…35 😂) and I use all kinds of baits for Bass fishing. The one bait I love to use is a Jig. There’s something about using a Jig that puts me in direct contact with the Bass. I have no idea what it is, but I love it! I have never tried stroking a Jig, but after watching this video, I’m wanting to try it. Sounds like a solid technique and makes perfect sense in that it replicates a fleeing Crawdad or bait fish. Thank you for posting this video. 👍👍

Here are the 2 best tips I ever got on fishing jigs with weed guards and they have improved my hook UPS 100% . The 1st came from ATV host and former pro by the name of Orlando Wilson about 35 years ago on his TV show. And this works for any jig with a weed guard except maybe a flipping jig and Jake. Spread the weed guard out you don't need that thickness other than a flipping jig and it will help you get the hook through the weed guard better and we'll still be witness and as a matter of fact will help keep weeds from the side of the bait away from the hook to. The other chip came from Al linner sir I'm one of his shows about 35 years ago also. I have never seen it since. He talked about using a crawfish imitator imitator on your jakes.. He talks about stringing it on the hook but instead of letting it flow straight off the back of the hook to string it about a 3rd of the way up the bend in the hook . This makes the pincher's stand up as you fish it just like a real crawfish does when it's trying to protect itself.. I saw him at a seeing Croix accident saying croy exhibition 2 years ago and asked him if he still does that because I never see it on the shows.. He says absolutely ! Try it and you'll see what I mean when using a crawfish plastic. There have been some Bates that have been developed with air pockets in the pictures to do just that when all you have to do is run that c*** but that crawl a 3rd of the way up the bend in the hook.

I spread those weed guards on every jig I use from an archie style bass jig to swim jig's, 2 Ned jigs. of course the only one where you would run the crawfish up one 3rd of the way up the hook has to do with casting jigs.all the other presentation the lure runs straight off the back of the hook.still spread the weed guard.

Thanks thanks so much for the info. I'm dedicating this month to learning how to fish a jig. Caught my first bass on a jig the other day. It was a 3 pounder in a place I normally catch dinks on a Texas rig. I will be using your tips. Great info!

The bigger bass usually eat it on the initial fall.. but if not.. unless its 50 degrees.. I'm hopping that kicking up dirt. Just remember you move that jig a mile even if you think you're barely moving it.

Definitely my go to technique win lose or draw. 9/10 I catch one good one on a jig. It or shakey. If they are just biting both the yeah.. I'm probably in the money. Although. .I've came a long way in adding other fish to bag. They call me Joe Bass or Big Fish Joe around here.
On hook sets.. if i feel bite.. i real down tight and jack that sucker. . If it's a hard quick bite.. just got to hope they have it and get as much slack up as you can

Matt great video. I love fishing a jig. I mostly feather it like you said. My question is can you explain the hookset on that type of retrieve? How you set the hook based on when you feel the bite in different positions of that retrieve.

Its just what everyone assumes you do with a jig...slow crawl it on the bottom. Which works, but it works even better when you mix in a few hops.
