    I dont understand why people say these engines are unreliable. Mine died at 196k kms from a broken coolant jacket. Still had great compression and previous owners never premixed it. Now i was tracking the car before it died, with a small crack in the coolant jacket. Damned thing brought me 100kms back home without any hiccups. Rebuilt it and went straight back to the racetrack the next year. Now 30k kms after the rebuild she still starts up like its nobodys business, gets driven hard everyday, no more track sadly since the local raceway closed but i do get it in the mountains every weekend or so. Damn love this ol thing

      On a global level (not just automotive) rotaries are super reliable, think of all the industrial gas engines, jet skis, light aircraft, karts, snowmobiles etc.
      Most of these have on thing in common, they are NA. Boost is not their friend.
      The Renesis is the exception but that’s down to how common they are and Normies don’t look after them and a bit of poor design.
      A carb’d FB or NA FC’s are pretty damn dependable, I nearly bought and unopened 134k NA FC once.

      Mainly the fact that a used corolla gets to about 400 000 km before blowing up, in terms of what you get for what you pay ends up covering a longer path, not to mention diesels

    The fact that people rebuild these engines on 5 gallon buckets should speak volumes of how simple these engines can be. It just takes people taking the time of learning what rotaries take to keep them happy. Tbh I think the major reason people keep swapping their 7s and 8s is because of the cost, rotaries are just expensive as of now.

      It just depends who you ask. Some owners have great experiences with them. Other owners like myself and my buddy have had TERRIBLE luck with our FCs. Mine was such a headache, that I sold it 18 months after buying it. It would spend at least 6 of those 18 months in my driveway waiting for parts backordered from japan. Just to get it to idle. At the very end, it lost compression, and I knew it was time for another rebuild of that engine. (Previous owner did a rebuild at 180k by a Mazda dealership). That engine only lasted 45k kms. So I sold mine not running for $600 at a $4k loss.
      My buddy bought an na S4 FC just after me, and it lost compression within 6 months. He did a 13bt swap. He put $10k Canadian into swapping ecu, wiring, engine, tranny, radiator, fans, driveshaft, rear diff, and axles. A year later, he told me that he lost all compression again and was gonna sell it at an $8k loss. He got about $3500CAD. I bought a Mustang after selling mine, and my buddy bought a civic. We were both much happier to have reliable cars after our nightmare experience. Like I said, just depends on who you ask if a rotary is worth it.

      Take me for example. I am a nobody, i know nothing about building engines.
      My first car was an Rx7, daily drove it for 7 years. Engine went out and i knowing nothing about building them rebuilt the engine myself. Its just that easy, if i can do anyone can do it. I have no background in mechanics, engineering, nothing. Such a simple engine, wish it never died because of dumb emission laws.

      My first experience with a rotary is my current project car. I found a 10th ann for a banger price but it had over a decade of no use sitting in a yard, everthing on it needed a refresh. So I'm still saving up for parts. It by no means is a perfect engine, but doesn't make it any less fun (at least for me).

    Your at a meet, there are turbo Beemers, straight piped V8s all popping & banging away. Then, a ported FD shows up! Everyone else has to sit down because the only way you can sound better than a ported 2 rotor is a ported 3 rotor.

    The only reason the rotary engine’s reliability really gets called into question is because they are always compared with ultra reliable piston engines. 200,000 km is totally possible with a rotary between rebuilds. But to explain how reliable reliable actually is let me tell you a quick story. Its 1979 and my dad buys a brand new chevy mailbu wagon equipped with a small block 350 chevy. Fast forward to 2024 and he still drives that same 1979 chevy malibu wagon. It has recieved 2 transmission rebuilds, 2 new torque converters, a new rear diff, many wheel bearings, and a few shocks. But the engine has never been rebuilt in all of the 633,000 miles (over 1,000,000km) that are on the odometer. Thats reliability, the rotary compromises on some of that because of its sheer performance capability. A naturally aspirated 13a will make more power than my fathers 350 with less than a forth of the displacement. But that performance has a cost, its only logical. You earned my subscription.

      This is also true! They are motors meant for performance, and in many ways performance reliability, but relatively speaking not longevity. They definitely can last longer than most think they can though ;) Thanks for the sub🤍

    To be honest, the first time I drove a rotary car, I was hooked. It has ruined my perception of other sports cars, I have never ever found anything nearly as good as it.

    Thank you for getting actual rotary owner's perspectives on reliability. There is so much hear-say on the internet from non-owners and people that don't have experience with the car. I've owned and raced RX7's for close to 20 years at this point. I wouldn't have stuck with these cars for so long if the reliability wasn't there.

    I picked up my Factory TII roller last year and so far its been a blast to learn how to work on against my MK5 GTI. although she's still a roller right now I'm chomping at the bit to learn more about the powertrain and chassis. Also having to buy parts off people with other FC's have lead to meeting some really cool people, from those who drift them, or time attack, to daily driven street cars. the community has be Surprisingly nice and knowledgeable willing top help with even the admittedly dumb things.

    As a v8 lover and a mustang guy i would like to say the rotary eninge is one of my absolute favorites i would love to pick up an fc one day or maybe an fd if money allows but hands down probably one of the best jdm motors ever so good it got banned from f1, braap braap and flames

    If only parts weren’t so expensive! Mazda is not doing any of us enthusiasts a favor by discontinuing parts and/or asking high prices for the parts they do sell. It’s not like there are a million different versions of the engine. Look at Porsche. They still sell general parts (not just engine parts) for the “classic” Porsches and those are many different models with many different engines. I think if rotary engine parts were cheaper, more people would be keeping them on the road.

      Exactly, Parts are just too expensive. I want to keep my 13b in my FC Rx7 but if it ever goes out on me i can't afford another engine. Which is my i am thinking about Renesis swapping mine. Rx8 are just so cheap compared to the Rx7 lineup engines.

    I’ve owned 6 Rx7’s and currently drive a 88 turbo and 93 R1. These cars are VERY special and IMO the best cars ever made! 🤘🏿

As a Euro car enthusiast (specifically Jaguars), I completely agree 😂 That applies to Euros as well: “People write them off and blow them up, but really it’s just that they don’t know how to take care of them properly.”

    As someone coming from the Subaru community it seems kinda familiar. People hate on the engines because they dont know jack shi about them. Awesome power delivery and great tunability. Still want a rotary car to call my own, i hope the day comes at some point. But here in Germany they are crazy expensive and nobody here knows anything about these engines.

    Id love one but only freshly rebuilt so that i know each fillup was premixed. Ive heard em lasting over 200k miles if you know how to treat them.

    ive owned all the jdm legends except for a skyline and an mr2 turbo. ive driven alot of super cars too. i have to favorite cars for feel and fun. the mazda rx-7 (shoulda kept my FD) and the first 2 generations of dsm(eclipse/Talon), the supra and s-13 ect. are tied for third. need to get my hands on a skyline. just hasnt happened.

    I love my FC, but i'm not under any illusion that it's a car for everybody, even putting aside the abnormal maintenance required to keep her brapping.
    It 's not an easy car to drive, if you don't get used to how the 13b responds to throttle control and shifting, it's also old and heavy (the controls are, the car is pretty light for a budget sports car from the 80s) and requires true physical effort to drive for long or hard...or both.
    I am just happy there are some dedicated people that appreciate them and more importantly, that it lived up to my 10 year old self's imagination (thank you Initial D).

    It’s like the difference between a 2 stroke and 4 stroke dirtbike more or less. Winds up more, powerband up high, wankels are a little more mechanically efficient too cause they don’t gotta convert vertical force to rotational. Less mechanical friction basically as to how much, who knows?… with all that said, it isn’t worth dumping your life savings to own one of these cars. Fun if you got the money, but most of us don’t. A turbo Honda, or v8 can also be fun, and way more reliable. Idc what anyone says, if your engine need to be rebuilt every 100k, it isn’t that reliable.

    Well I think the reliability thing just comes down to the fact it's horribly unreliable if you treat it as a normal daily car. Like imagine Stacy with her Corolla that gets an oil change at valvoline every two years and never lets the engine warm up, a rotary is gonna last a period of times counted in days in such situations, and you gotta remember when they were new or newish that's the kind of people that bought them (well maybe not stacy, but you know non car people, or at least people that are used to normal cars), not project car type of people.
    But as a project car that is gonna get attention and maintenance regardless, and particular care, it's probably not that bad.
    You just gotta remember what a car is supposed to be made for, how it's expected to be cared about, and realistically a rotary would be an horrible and unreliable experience in the hands of 99% of car owners.

      Thanks for the comment! These are good points, but that kind of negligent ownership is bad for any car, not just the rotary. It’s just that the rotary won’t put up with it nearly as long. Both a normal daily car and a rotary should be maintained according to their manuals, and both will last long if done so. Treating a car “like a daily car” is not an excuse for poor ownership.

    With the reliability, honestly its the same thing with Subarus. People are just echoing words of the past, or changing things without building the foundation to handle the changes.
    Sucks that Mazda has _ supposedly_ raised the prices of the rotors/housings. Some are speculating it's because they're gonna start reusing them more and don't want to be as cheap as they were anymore, so they can make more money off rebuilds.

    the reason people mistakenly PRETEND its unreliable is the motor is the cheapest simplest basic lawnmower like style in terms of car engines on the market. Interestingly some people argue that you could sort of use some of the best and biggest lawnmowers in them and get a 'good enough' since many go carts and motorbikes do that and italian supercars crafted by carpenters and plumbers you've surely heard of from the mountain villages now world famous brands that had to discontiue their twin engine product line when certain mower factory parts became unavailable is a big clue.
    They dont understand that when their mowers and things break down often its because they're a cheap and never maintained poor design often as they throw the cheapest simplest whatever in and not customize it for a specific car or weight or size and what have you or for longevity. A well engineered car designed for the road and all weather conditions and longevity easily outlasts most alternatives in engine on the market with lower costs. But because it can sorta spit fire out the exhaust and delivers a potential heap of too much power or could be considered noisier the way some mowers might be the sorta whiney high pitched or uhh chainsaw like motor noises? they tend to not line or soundproof or insulate the car at all or theyd never sell any other car and make it last not as long as it should or other engines would be super impractical so to drive one in a market with not rotarys you gotta kinda change the oil and tighten the timings and belts or sorta tune it and health check it more with minor maintenance and lubrication/greasing. So they try and make the most reliable simplest basic part uhh like a rice cooker look like an expensive thermomix with too many buttons and attachments that might need more cleaning than say a brand name that costs more and is awful at making rice. Just imagine they make it so the keep warm function of your rice cooker doesnt automatically stay or you gotta check on it. As cheap or 'replaceable' belts and coolants and things might somehow not be as reliable as they would be in any other car on earth even the SAME car in some other country they dont sell expensive alternatives. So its the reliable affordable easy to build and maintain by comparison with many more hundred thousand KM life expectancy when correctly maintained but the small stuff like a belt or a band or a filter might require maintenance or replacement more than on a far shittier more expensive less reliable less hundred thousands of KM's life expectancy engine and its often mistaken with troubles related to far older cars of a similar rotary motor in the 80s which were basically fakes built outta lawn mowers you have to watch out for.
    Buy it from the factory overseas check their catalog call them go in person to order select the colors and interior and parts maybe customize the engine slightly better or bigger model then get it exported to your country as car salesmen had many decades to figure it out but keep buying their cars from the lawn mower store the fags especially when the factory might make a few thousand a year and fill the nearby parking lot and containers or storage and need to sell them all clear before they can produce more but a cheap good looking great value reliable car might in several years sell 600,000 cars world wide but the factory made only about 50,000. Your local cardealer fags will harass the government to slam you with massive import taxes and duties and hardly any boats will let you drive the car on as cargo so uhh good luck! most of your foreign cars were locally mowing lawns or whatever and just appeared one day without being exported from country of origin by trillions of ocean liner sized boats with cars stacked higher than the tallest buildings on earth each time a new model of car releases..

    The reliability comments bug me. They're a high performance engine that has only been developed by 1 manufacturer and non turbo engines that have regular servicing, good fuel quality can get upwards of 200ks and in some cases its just a freshen up.Take 4AGE, or SR20 both without turbo and given a performance life would have simular life of around 200ks maybe 250ks an they'd be getting a little tired also some point they would need timing belt/chain done. Its shonky builders, bad tuning, and complete lack of knowledge thats given these engines such a bad rep and unfortunately dumb people listen a believe dumb people.

    It's funny and stpid how Ferrari and jetta are the worst engines cars because of how unreliable they are... but people see a dorito and it's automatically the worst of the worst 🙄🙄🙄🙄.

    I like we are mainly featuring FC's. FD's are way overplayed, unpopular opinion.
