This video shows the first step of the reconstruction of Calypso, famous ship of Captain Cousteau. The ship is towed from La Rochelle to Concarneau, in the shipyard where she will be completly rebuilt.
I was a longtime contributor to the Cousteau Society, and proud of it. I used to fight fires up in Alaska in the late 60's and was living in Anchorage when Calypso visited to re-supply for a trip into northern waters for a film they were making. I happened to take a walk down to the dock area on a day off and there was the Calypso and all her crew, wearing their red knit caps. I happened to be standing near a bollard when the ship was due to cast off and I slacked the line and threw it to the deck hand on Calypso and Captain Cousteau was there and waved to me in thanks.
I grew up in the 60's, I'd couldn't wait for Cousteau's show back then, I grew up on the coast so the ocean was a part of my life, but seeing the Calypso going to distant oceans was exciting, great memories. Thank you.
Calypso should NEVER have been allowed to deteriorate, many of us grew up on that Vessel with the crew ,and, Capt. COUSTEAU, I still see him on her Bow, she's just magnificent !!!
In 1970 my friend and I got to talk to Mr Cousteau on board the Calypso while in Long Beach California. He was very gracious along with his son Phillipe. Let us wander around the ship, even went down the bow observation bubble. Calypso is a lot smaller than it looks on TV
@@straightmanforever69 sadly I believe she is sat in a Turkish boatyard with nothing being done. So very sad and due mostly to internal wrangles with the family I believe.
Wow. I remember watching Jacque Cousteau and the Calypso on TV in the 1960s. I never really thought about but just assumed the ship was long gone. Very cool to restore a piece of history.
I just want to thank those that are doing this for restoring the calypso. So many of us here in the United States seen this ship at different times with Jacque Cousteau on board with his sons. We learn so many things now future Generations will be able to have this
I'm hearing John Denver's Calypso I had to post it here. He captures the Joy we all felt as children watching the adventures of this great ship and crew. "To sail on a dream on a crystal clear Ocean, to ride on the crest of a wild raging storm. To work in the service of life and the living, in search of the answers to questions unknown. to be a part of the movement and part of the growing, part of beginning to understand. Aye Calypso, the place's you've been to, the things that you've shown us, the stories you tell. Aye Calypso, I sing to your spirit, the men who have served you so long and so well. "..... Thanks so much to all for preserving this history. Much Love.
41point2 anything would be better than those horrid violins. I ditched the vid over them 15 secs in. I too remember the ship. But if people cared about its mission , it would have never come to this condition. But talk is always easier than work so it is what it is.
It was by watching jaques coutsteau programs on TV that sparked my interest in diving in the 60's and 70's. I became diving officer of various BSAC clubs here in the UK and dived wrecks around the world including the German High season fleet in Scapa Flow when diving was much more basic than it is today. What a great man.
I am from the Philippines and now in my golden age as child growing in the 70's the Calypso is part of my growing up years its an iconic Ship in oceanic research and i do hope it will be restored on its former glory and preserve as one of the famous ship in the century.
OMG i used to watch this ships adventures as a child and Cousteaus adventures prompted me to learn to dive! i cannot BELIEVE Calypso was allowed to rot away like this i hope they save her. I loved watching the adventures of Captain Cousteau and Calypso. Until now I never knew what had become of the ship. I'm so pleased to see this happening.
I have a model of her in a lighted case, in my living room. Captain Cousteau was probably the main inspiration that got me into diving. My regs, BC, and masks - all U.S. Divers/Aqualung. It is as heartwarming to see the ship being restored as it was heartbreaking to learn she'd sunk, back in the late 1990's. Vive La Calypso!
@@stevenhombrados1530 No, she sank before she was moved to France where she was part renovated. After some issues she was moved to a boatyard in Turkey and extensive work was done on the hull, frames etc but I believe there was a fire, now I don’t know what if anything is being done to complete her. Cousteau and this ship planned out my life . i was a child when I used to watch the great man on tv. i started diver training at 14 , and by 21 was working on the oil rigs. I so wanted to be one of his aquanauts
The ship is now in Turkey, hopefully yo be fully restored. I am so surprised that the support in France could not be raised to make it happen there! I have such fond memories of the Calypso, her crew, and their amazing adventures. So inspiring, even now as I look back as a 50 year old. Truly special people.
I think it has to do with the post-JYC Cousteau Fondation simply does not inspire trust at all... Endless litigation against legitimate owner of the ship and blood relatives of JYC tired the public. If we want this ship to be restored properly, we just need to get rid of the Cousteau Foundation.
I believe Calypso started out as a minesweeper, and Jacques Cousteau converted her for oceanic research. She really should be an international treasure.
This brings me back to my childhood, I can remember the anticipation, and excitement of waiting for the undersea adventures to come on , and racing to the television when I heard that iconic music at the beginning of the show, what a great living room adventure it was!

Calypso was launched in 1941 in Seattle as a minesweeper (wooden hull) to help rid the scourge of socialist AXIS tyranny. With Capt. Cousteau she became a world icon and inspired countless adults and children. She deserves to be permanently preserved with reverence.
Cant believe this ship is still around. It was this ship the late Jack Cousteau did oceanic research with during the 60s-70s. .Loved watching his documentaries as a kid .

How frail all things are in the hands of time, Calypso and her crew friends to us all as children our telivised classroom to the sea a sad sight indeed, hopefully this grand lady of the sea will become again the symbol of all thing wild and free.
As of 2014, she HAS NOT been restored, she is hold up on a barge due to non payment of bills, with barely 30% of the work done. Unless the french government takes over and funds it, Calypso will continue to rot away..
The wonderful sailor Jacques Cousteau visited Iraq and filmed a famous trip from there across the Arabian Gulf, then arrived at the Bab al-Mandab Strait and burned his ship in protest against the presence of warships for the major warring countries there .... Do you have a video of that incident, kindly?
enfant, j'assistais à ces expéditions; mais invitable tout vieillit When I was a child I saw these traces but undoubtedly, everything ages Cuando Yo era niño veía estas travesías pero indudablemente todo envejece

Mr. Cousteau was not there for any of this. I remember the tiny helicopter, the cramped galley, the paper cups from Bermuda, the great crew. Good times. Sad to see the ship in this condition.
Now that really is awesome!
Thats ship invented SCUBA diving. God bless her and all who sails on her.
The greatest ship in the world today.
Awesome!!
And she was.. the ship of dreams!
Jacques Cousteau would be so happy !
Why didn't this documentary get aired in the US? It's a wonderful story .
Before Captain Cousteau, few people knew what the underwater world looked like. I'm glad the Calypso is being saved.
You truly are the ship of dreams
Love to see the ship of Capt. Jaques Strappe Steau restored.
Oohhh extraordinaire bravo à tout ces hommes ✌✌✌❤❤❤🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️
unreal. What a same. Such a lady!
I often wondered what happen to that ship, still remember seeing a few times on the research ship that I was on
How frail all things are in the hands of time, Calypso and her crew friends to us all as children our telivised classroom to the sea a sad sight indeed, hopefully this grand lady of the sea will become again the symbol of all thing wild and free.
A piece of history
I remember there was a plastic model kit of Calypso that I built years ago.
As of 2014, she HAS NOT been restored, she is hold up on a barge due to non payment of bills, with barely 30% of the work done. Unless the french government takes over and funds it, Calypso will continue to rot away..
Calypso the Cold war ice breaker! My hero
You've made million John Denver fans very appi.
Just imagine if each of those fans would donate just five dollars to this project.
Calypso history in the making great......
That poor boat. She has been neglected for so long. Hopefully when she is restored she will be better than she has been in decades.
Im crying , both in sadness and happiness . yeah I can't explain it
When I was a child I saw these traces but undoubtedly, everything ages
