Been many many years since I played Divine Divinity, but I remember Zandalor and Lucien appointing an entirely new council, not actually resurrecting anyone. They also all die right after appointing Lucien the divine, if I'm not mistaken.
They don't appoint anyone, the gods chose people whether they were aware of their appointment or not, but yes they gather a new council, and after the ritual to raise Lucian to Divinity, the demon of lies kills everyone but Zandalor and the Orc representative Kroxxi. I actually have a full series on the story of Divine Divinity. I probably shouldn't of used the word resurrected there as opposed to restored. Could have chosen my words better there 🤷
Thanks for making it simpler. But Larian really needs to work on their pacing with the story. It’s so convoluted atm and even the books found in games really don’t do much in terms of making the lore more comprehensible.
This kinda annoys me to be frank. DoS:2 Made it pretty plain, that Lucian is a right bastard, and for all of his talk of sacrifice, he never was the one to suffer, and everyone else around him was forced to shoulder this "Sacrifice" for him, and his twisted plans. Even if the Seven were not innocent angels, if it wasn't for Lucian death fogging the elves, the whole void thing never would have happened to begin with. DoS:2 Also implies that if he gets his way, he purges all the source from the realm, thus making him a false divine, but the dragon knight game, which is supposedly after DoS:2, shows Lucian is still alive, and the divine? How does that work? Honestly, I'll be rather upset if Lucian canonically gets away with everything, he didn't deserve to. Though, thank you for making a timeline, it makes things easier to understand. DoS and DoS:2 was my introduction to the games, I didn't even realize until a while later Divinity was the same world, I thought it was just games of similar names. I agree. I think it's bullshit that he does all these horrible things "for the greater good" but he always ensures that *he* is still worshiped as a God by everyone in every outcome. I could see them doing this tbh since they just nlw started caring about lore
Just finished my very first play through with Fane on D:OS2, and I came here to learn more about the lore of the world. I'm confused on the existence of Eternals. Do they exist before 8800 AR, because they[the Gods] created all the creatures aside from regular wildlife, and if so, throughout the rest of the timeline just referred to as Divine/Gods(?). Was the technology of Dragon Commander something that that civilization at the time created, or technology of Eternals? And can we assume that the Female Divine that the Black Ring found and disturbed was actually Amadia(Or perhaps the one other Divine before Lucian)? I haven't played any other Divinity games, but I assume the Divinity Series revolves around Lucian & Damian, so my Fane and party will not be important in the next installment.
Eternals predate basically everything so even dragon commander. Long gone even by then, The technology from dragon commander was whispered to people by demons in exchange for things the demons wanted (specifically the demon Corvus, antagonist from the DC game) before being destroyed by the dragon knight protagonist at the end of the game and then lost to history. The Divine being disturbed by the Black Ring in Divine Divinity is PRESUMED to be Amadia, but it's left intentionally vague and they don't seem to be interested in explaining it specifically. Lastly, the next installment if they don't outright cancel it will be Fallen Heroes which will feature most of the characters from OS2 as its only a few years later, so yes and no. Larian will probably pick a canonical ending to set in stone for OS2 with FH, though it's likely going to be source being shared with everyone or completely purged, as those two endings would make the most sense in context of everything else going on in Divinity 2
@@oldoneeye7516 it makes sense, if you kill lucian and Hammer, they resurect, don't know how, but in the ending they are alive and taking all the glory.
I'm torn between admiring the dedication to try and make a timeline from Larian's "canon" or thinking this is futile since if we're talking about holes the whole tapestry (like they said in DOS1 IIRC) is a net :) I played Dragon knight saga then commander then DOS1 then DOS2 so the oldest then the newest chronologically but it still made sense, then the wackiest where nothing seemed to matter then the one where Lucian the canonical paladin is a bastard and Arrhu too since he was his accomplice, and probably Zandalor too, so to me Original sin 2 is an alternate "dark" version/universe/timeline
Larian should just scrap the Divinity 2 stuff, have Original sin 2's death of Lucian be canon and either go with a new divine based on your saves (import save or just do an interactive bit at beginning like some other rpgs) or have everyone have source or purge source. But the story with Lucian is just too convoluted at this point and apparently majority of players killed Lucian anyway. They should follow the will of the players and change the world for the better.
well having a player character be a literal god would be really hard to write, as thousands of different divines exist and you can't condense every players' character into one person, it would make everyone feel really detached; it's just easier to have an ending that isn't literal anarchy on rivellon and one that's impossible to write
@@jaspergregorio9774 many other rpgs pull this stuff by the end of the game, that is the whole point with series like divinity were games are set in a universe but not necessarily connected directly. You can become the Dragorn Born and ascend to diety level of power. You can become the divine etc. That is how you write it. Simple.
@@pseudointellectualist1936 I am saying that they should change the time line with Divinity 2, right now Divinity 2 is connected directly to the much older Divine games, Divinity 2 however is massively popular and has put larian in a spot were they can fix anything they deem troublesome, like lets say a convoluted timeline created by ill planned games.
But, with both (presumed) potential canonical endings of Divinity: Original Sin 2, Lucian lost his powers and only pretended to still be the Devine after his return. So he has no powers for the rest of the timeline, right ?
do you think Larian Studios will redo them because of bg3 success; so the project will have more time to restructure Divinity from any bugs & missing gameplay they didn't try yet?
Lucien may have been a hero at some point but he essentially condones what is done to sourcerers and mortals in DOS2, I.e. mind maggots, torture, enslavement and genocide, all in the name of saving the realm, yet he lives on.... go figure. Why they continuously revive such a god awful character I may never know, but thanks so much for this comprehensive work. Chronology now makes tons of sense. I'm just going to pretend I killed him in DOS2
What about the fact that lucian was trapped in hypnerotomachia by ygerna and damian? I have to say, as a big DKS fan, the story of original sin 2 makes no sense at all in retrospect It is clearly stated that the divine was assassinated (actually was captured) after the war against the black ring which took place before OS2 (since a book about it can be found in OS2) and was discovered to be alive by the last dragon knight So how can lucian be simultaneously trapped in hypnerotomachia and plot the downfall of the gods in his tomb in Arx? Its not just hazy, its downright illogical
@@MortismalGaming 1st war was against demon of lies and his cabal and the 2nd one was damien vs lucian (during which damien was banished to nemesis) right? And after the second war lucian was assassinated and presumed dead (but still alive in hypnerotomachia according to the flames of vengeance DLC, thus not in a tomb in Arx) Or am I missing something? Btw, I just like to discuss this with knowledgeable people like you, so no gripes against your video ^^ Its a very good video 👍
@@SpriteAndSmite thank you, and no I mean there is a second separate war after D:OS2 with the Black Ring where Lucian is captured by Damian, seems to be the plot of Fallen Heroes which was put on hold
@@MortismalGaming aaah okay now it makes sense xD I still dont like how they basically turned lucian into a utilitarian tyrant, but at least I know now that the timeline makes sense ^^ thanks for clearing that up
I hope they make things more concise and sensible with and after Fallen Heroes. If they need to retcon a but, I don’t think that’d be bad, but holy crap is the story wack right now.
Has the lore been updated after this video was published? I know Fallen Heroes has been canceled, but maybe some details have been clarified or something... I wouldn't mind if they decide to write books telling the story based on DOS2's new lore.
This maybe the best place to ask this question so spoilers cause it’s a question about the ending… So I gave everyone super powers and the characters that aren’t neutral about it think it was a stupid idea of fact the game also kinda seems to hint at that what is the context I’m missing here
Maybe we can play some heroes in fallen heros who scratch lucian out of existance at the tapestry of time, because something bad happens after 1300 AD because of lucians reign as false devine. So we travel back in time so that D:OS2 godwoken become devine and kill lucian (and dragon saga and d:os2 end never happend in the changed timeline)
@@MortismalGaming Its certainly the safest option in terms of narrative and gameplay id assume. No source no wacky combat and a world full of super powers.
Sounds like divinity is suffering from star wars syndrome when it comes to time Lucian’s 4 year plan is almost as ridiculous as Han Solo calling the Jedi generals in the biggest galactic war in the past 20 years that he was alive for hokie ancient wizards who in the past of the republic served as public officials
I dunno why it's called Dragon Knight Saga and not Ego Draconis, I only know it by the name 'Ego Draconis' even have the OG disc here. Has there been a remake? 👀
I've done full videos on both but short version Arhu: Born a cat, granted exceptional magic powers by the lich sister of Braccus Rex, incredibly long lived as a result (wizards in this universe can live thousands of years and it never explains why besides magic) Jahan: Made a deal with a demon for 1000 years of life and then tracked it down and killed it (his companion quest in DOS1) which granted him effective immortality, it seems to be implied he can still be killed but wont ever die of old age, illness etc.
So from what I gathered after watching some youtube videos the story went something like; 1. Dragon Commander days everyone was strong and all was well 2. Original Sin -> Wizard Wars started 3. Divine Divinity -> The 7 each gave half their power to a new Divine -> Lucian -> Lucian the idiot didn't kill the demon kid so The Black Ring split souls into a mortal baby Damian, Lucian decides to raise the kid and the kid falls for some spy Ygerna who tries to get him to realize his powers etc... Lucian finds out and kills her, Damian goes full emo and wages war on his father 4. Beyond Divinity -> Damian got banished to some other realm and cannot return so he tricks u the Paladin into soul forging with him and manages to return 5. Original Sin 2 -> You get rid of all source so Voidwoken and GodWoken can't attack 6. Dragon Knight Saga -> You revive then slay Damian's GF Now no matter how I look at this, I don't really understand wtf the story is about other than we need to kill Damian but then why is he absent in every game after Beyond Divinity??? Is Original Sin2 and Dragon Knight just fillers??? It's like the story didn't progress at all after Beyond Divinity... Also I thought I was the new divine after Original Sin 2? Also Lucian was weak as shit in Original Sin 2, I could of 2shot the fool...
Yes, I think it's stupid to let lucian live after dos2, it has no point, the character sucks anyways and we've seen enough of his ugly mug i don't want to hear his name again
@@pneumonoultramicroscopicsi4065 I do not think we are done his name lols until Divinity 2. It does not matter anyway Lucian is a Grey hero etc and glad to see for former divine since it started with him first divinity.
Original Sin where you can make any OP build & even Barrel OP=Teleksis to Swen Vicke that just their design. But, Lucian is not weak & little weaker than Braccuss Rex no irrevelant to any story beside being a "Favourite baddie boy" make no sense. He is not weak than Braccus Rex wtf is this shit Swen Vicke?. He is very powerful even powerful than God-king as Lucian states. The God King can't be as powerful as Lucian if Lucian without almost all of the Source in existence is able to stop him etc.
Don't watch this video if you haven't played D:OS 2 and you plan to in the future or if you haven't finished the game. I think you should seriously add SPOILER warnings at the start of the video, like which people shouldn't be watching this to avoid spoilers, especially when a large portion of people getting into this game started with D:OS series. I appreciate your work and effort but I watched this video at the worst time possible, when I just started playing D:OS 2, I was expecting a general outline of the game's history/timeline (and it is general enough) and the general events of the game's world but boy that spoiler slightly ruined the experience for me during the most important climax of the game. I know it's my fault in the first place but I just wanted to have a short informative video explaining the timeline of the game and history that every rivellonians already know about since my character is a "Scholar" lol.
Hi and thanks for making video on Divinity timeline. You did great job but unfortunately there are few things i have to say. First no game was decannonized by Larian so all games are so far cannon. Secondly Lucian wasnt assasinated in 1238 to 1242 because its confirmed that Damian attacks Rivellon in 1244 AD. Besides this Lucian used deathfog on Black ring in 1233 AD and probably used it as a cover to banish Damian and fake his death. In Divinity II DKS Its stated that Lucian was killed by Dragon Knight 5 decades ago so it doesnt make sense for him to die between 1238 and 1242 AD. Atleast thats how i understand the lore
@@MortismalGaming Truly? I am sorry then i concentrated a lot on the written stuff than on what you spoke. My bad 😅. (Its late here so my half sleeping brain is guilty)
@@MortismalGaming I understand that. Larian is well... not really good at connecting games. One thing that has been bugging me is for example who is Alexandars mother or where he came from because official lorebook and game contradict themselves. ( Atleast to my british friend. Since english is not my mother language he told me that the information in lorebook makes Alexandar born on 1233 AD...and personally i am just confused). As with writing it can be quite tedious to write it all. I tried to write complete Lucians bio on wiki and it took me several hours to patch most things up. So i completely understand why you havent written it all. (I apologise if i sounded arrogant)
@@janadenkova4345 Just one remark: stuff like this happens a lot if one creates games/books/films without thinking about an underlying franchise. Connecting such different storylines as Ego Draconis and Divinity OS is not as easy as most people believe. Give Larian time, let their universe grow. I know many rpg-franchises (partly p&p ones) who needed up to twenty years to connect all their stories comprehensively.
Your comment is a little hard to read to be honest, but here's a video where I cover the entire story of Divinity 2 at any rate czcams.com/video/0bMIk5_O6W8/video.html

Yes D:OS1 takes place in 4 AR, and D:OS2 happens in 1242 AD, Lucian died to Death fog in 1233 fighting Damian According to D:OS2. Lucian didn't even become Divine until 1218 AD, so D:OS1 honestly didn't have much to do with 2

I doubt it, theyd probably just make new one
Lucien may have been a hero at some point but he essentially condones what is done to sourcerers and mortals in DOS2, I.e. mind maggots, torture, enslavement and genocide, all in the name of saving the realm, yet he lives on.... go figure. Why they continuously revive such a god awful character I may never know, but thanks so much for this comprehensive work. Chronology now makes tons of sense. I'm just going to pretend I killed him in DOS2
I realy love this serie but damn... story is so confusing xd Thanks for explanation
What about the fact that lucian was trapped in hypnerotomachia by ygerna and damian? I have to say, as a big DKS fan, the story of original sin 2 makes no sense at all in retrospect
It is clearly stated that the divine was assassinated (actually was captured) after the war against the black ring which took place before OS2 (since a book about it can be found in OS2) and was discovered to be alive by the last dragon knight
So how can lucian be simultaneously trapped in hypnerotomachia and plot the downfall of the gods in his tomb in Arx?
Its not just hazy, its downright illogical
Two separate wars with the Black Ring, one before OS2 and one after
@@MortismalGaming 1st war was against demon of lies and his cabal and the 2nd one was damien vs lucian (during which damien was banished to nemesis) right?
And after the second war lucian was assassinated and presumed dead (but still alive in hypnerotomachia according to the flames of vengeance DLC, thus not in a tomb in Arx)
Or am I missing something?
Btw, I just like to discuss this with knowledgeable people like you, so no gripes against your video ^^
Its a very good video 👍
@@SpriteAndSmite thank you, and no I mean there is a second separate war after D:OS2 with the Black Ring where Lucian is captured by Damian, seems to be the plot of Fallen Heroes which was put on hold
@@MortismalGaming aaah okay now it makes sense xD
I still dont like how they basically turned lucian into a utilitarian tyrant, but at least I know now that the timeline makes sense ^^ thanks for clearing that up
@@SpriteAndSmite For sure, Im not wild about the second faked death part myself either.
I hope they make things more concise and sensible with and after Fallen Heroes. If they need to retcon a but, I don’t think that’d be bad, but holy crap is the story wack right now.
I agree, Fallen Heroes is honestly the opportunity to bridge all these gaps in the lore from D:OS2 to D2
Has the lore been updated after this video was published? I know Fallen Heroes has been canceled, but maybe some details have been clarified or something... I wouldn't mind if they decide to write books telling the story based on DOS2's new lore.
No with Fallen Heroes cancelled this is all still up to date
This maybe the best place to ask this question so spoilers cause it’s a question about the ending…
So I gave everyone super powers and the characters that aren’t neutral about it think it was a stupid idea of fact the game also kinda seems to hint at that what is the context I’m missing here
Maybe we can play some heroes in fallen heros who scratch lucian out of existance at the tapestry of time, because something bad happens after 1300 AD because of lucians reign as false devine. So we travel back in time so that D:OS2 godwoken become devine and kill lucian (and dragon saga and d:os2 end never happend in the changed timeline)
Is there nothing to draw from the games after dps2 to determine what the godwoken chose to do with source?
Nothing concrete, it's heavily implied the purged world option is what happened though
@@MortismalGaming Its certainly the safest option in terms of narrative and gameplay id assume. No source no wacky combat and a world full of super powers.
Hopefully Larian continues this game series
I always thought that wizard wars were actually events in Dragon Commander.
10/10 ty
Sounds like divinity is suffering from star wars syndrome when it comes to time Lucian’s 4 year plan is almost as ridiculous as Han Solo calling the Jedi generals in the biggest galactic war in the past 20 years that he was alive for hokie ancient wizards who in the past of the republic served as public officials
So how old is Zandalor if he was alive in 4 AR and also in 1218 AD? Or is it 2 different wizards named Zandalor from Original Sin and Divine Divinity?
Same guy, true wizards are more or less demi gods in Divinity, the seem to live an undisclosed very long time.
I dunno why it's called Dragon Knight Saga and not Ego Draconis, I only know it by the name 'Ego Draconis' even have the OG disc here. Has there been a remake? 👀
Ego Draconis the base game, DKS refers to the base game and expansion together
@@MortismalGaming THERE WAS AN EXPANSION!? Bloody hell I need to find a digital copy of that game and the expansion
Mortismal Gaming
...?
@@MortismalGaming And no one will ever know.
Wat?
This is confusing
So what the fuck are arhu and Jahan?
Both are present in div os and os2
I've done full videos on both but short version
Arhu: Born a cat, granted exceptional magic powers by the lich sister of Braccus Rex, incredibly long lived as a result (wizards in this universe can live thousands of years and it never explains why besides magic)
Jahan: Made a deal with a demon for 1000 years of life and then tracked it down and killed it (his companion quest in DOS1) which granted him effective immortality, it seems to be implied he can still be killed but wont ever die of old age, illness etc.
So from what I gathered after watching some youtube videos the story went something like;
1. Dragon Commander days everyone was strong and all was well
2. Original Sin -> Wizard Wars started
3. Lucian finds out and kills her, Damian goes full emo and wages war on his father
4. Beyond Divinity -> Damian got banished to some other realm and cannot return so he tricks u the Paladin into soul forging with him and manages to return
5. Original Sin 2 -> You get rid of all source so Voidwoken and GodWoken can't attack
6. Dragon Knight Saga -> You revive then slay Damian's GF
Now no matter how I look at this, I don't really understand wtf the story is about other than we need to kill Damian but then why is he absent in every game after Beyond Divinity???
I haven't played any of the games but reading their lore feels like reading someone's shitty D&D campaign
'Tis more confugulating than the lore of which game I speak is Dark souls
Glad you enjoyed it, I said all of those things in the video though? And pointed out that while you can make the leaps yourself there are plot holes.
@@MortismalGaming Truly? I am sorry then i concentrated a lot on the written stuff than on what you spoke. My bad 😅. (Its late here so my half sleeping brain is guilty)
@@janadenkova4345 no worries I totally get it but yeah I explain a lot of that over the relevant side. Just didn't want to try to write it all etc
Actually dragon slayer is the one who capture lucian. He go back time to stop him kill damnian lover. Then they both capture after that fight.
Your comment is a little hard to read to be honest, but here's a video where I cover the entire story of Divinity 2 at any rate
czcams.com/video/0bMIk5_O6W8/video.html
Okay, let's just pretend that the first 4 games didn't happen, and that DOS and DOS2 are independent stories that accidentally share some names.
oh so it's just a bunch of nonsense. cool, now I can focus on playing Original Sin 2 without worrying about lore stuff.
Yeah pretty much
Wait, isn't Divnity Original Sin 2 about 1000 years after DOS ? I mean, Ifan fought in Lucian's army and he can't be older than 50. Also, everyone in Rivelon is reacting as if his death was a recent thing. (I mean in DOS 2)
Yes D:OS1 takes place in 4 AR, and D:OS2 happens in 1242 AD, Lucian died to Death fog in 1233 fighting Damian According to D:OS2. Lucian didn't even become Divine until 1218 AD, so D:OS1 honestly didn't have much to do with 2
@@MortismalGaming But they are trying to resurrect Braccus Rex, and one of the companions is Jahan, and there is Lord Arhu too!
What the hell Larian...
@@janisir4529 yeah it's supposed to be over a thousand years later and all of those characters are supposed to be like super mages so who knows how long theyre gonna live 🤷
@@MortismalGaming Super mage my ass, Jahan got whopped by the doctor... And Arhu totally just died.
@@janisir4529 Arhu isnt dead. He appears in Divinity 2 Dragon Knight Saga in the ending cutscene. That game takes place in 1300 AD. As for Wizard immortality. Wizards were blessed by Seven God Amadia who gave all wizards immortality or atleast prolonged life. :)
I just got spoiled when looking for backstory
You liked it but it hurt to know ending like that bro :(
I hear you, that sucks. I make more of an effort to call out spoilers these days, but it is a bummer for sure
I came here to understand the lore before starting DOS2
Amazing video, but you ruined a major plot point in divinity original sin 2.
You said : « Spoiler Alert by the way » AFTER revealing a major the spoiler...
It was around 8:10
8:26
Gives spoiler, follows up with "spoiler, btw". Wtf dude, all I wanted was the story up to original sin 2, and you casually just spoiled such a huge thing.
It's a 3 year old game, it was a prequel to Divinity 2, the marketing for Fallen Heroes had tons of spoilers, so I understand the frustration but at the same time I'm not entirely sure what you were expecting.
