I love that depiction of Alfred where he let the bread burn. (There was a tale saying that when his army set up in a village he was asked by a widow to watch her bread so it didn’t burn - but so focused on planning how to deal with the Vikings that he let the bread burn. The widow then drove him from the house and according to legend it was then he came up with the plan on how to deal with them)
It’s such a great story. And even though it didn’t happen, the fact that it actually probably reflects his character better than most of those stories tend to do makes it even better.
I expect you to make good on your promise of 'what if everything went perfect for Ireland', the absolute devastation of England's non existence not benefitting Ireland demands it.
What if everything went perfect for Ireland, possibly beginning with a sort of unification pre-Norman invasion in 1167, would be really cool to see! Love the videos
Video suggestion : What if Ireland joined ww2 on either side. You could split the video in two to cover either Ireland siding with the allies or the axis. Love your videos and keep up the amazing work. The maps look amazing. ❤
The borders would be different if Ireland's side wins, as they'd either be given Northern Ireland if they joined the Allies or take Northern Ireland if they joined the Axis.
@@gengarzilla1685I doubt that Northern Ireland would be lost if Ireland joined the allies. Why would Britain consent to giving up a European ISLES territory in exchange for some random colonies
@@cosmosyn2514 I doubt that britain would be desperate enough for a small insignificant country that hates them to go to war alongside them, and offer them Northern Ireland for it
I love medieval alternate history and this is a good example of it. I would support more wholeheartedly, especially far-flung outside of Europe - we need more medieval Indian and medieval Chinese scenarios
I think there are some huge changes you may be missing. First linguistically a permanent danelaw would probably cause standard English to become much more similar to the Scandinavian languages. Jackson Crawford and Simon Roper did a great video about what a conversation between an Anglo-Saxon and an Old Norse speaker may have looked like. The languages were already almost mutually intelligible, hundreds of years of proximity would probably cause them to be even more so. The second big change I think is possible is a larger sphere of influence for Scandinavia as a whole. Jorvik would essentially make the British isles an extension of Scandinavia and may allow them to culturally hold onto some of their further colonies. Many of the Norse cities in Ireland could maintain their Norse identity much longer. Normandy may end up like the England of our timeline with a Norman language which is mostly Germanic but has been heavily influenced by French because it has access to greater Scandinavian support. Finally Jorvik could ally itself with celts in general as a buffer for its sphere of influence. Supporting the Welsh against the English like you said but also possibly the Bretons against the French to help keep the Normans out of the French sphere of influence. It could also allow for Norse colonialism to get the head start it almost had in our timeline. Maintaining the Greenland and Vinland colonies or even just the knowledge of those lands would be much easier with a large kingdom so much farther west than Norway was. Further on into the timeline a more powerful Scandinavia as a whole might cause the low Germans and Dutch to gravitate more towards Scandinavian culture and influence rather than German and HRE influence but this is maybe a stretch. I love your videos btw and don’t think that youre wrong about what you said I just think the implications of this scenario should look more at the areas that Viking age Norsemen as a whole we’re interested in rather than mostly England and Jorvik. I also understand Scandinavia was by no means unified at this time but I don’t think that matters too much because of how much more far reaching their cultural influence would be with a permanent base in Britain. Thanks for the video!!
@@xNick01 he already did a "what if everything went perfect for the Roman Empire", it obviously led to a stronger Italy but litterally impossible to predict the future after the inevitable fall
@possiblehistory, Do a video about "What If The United Kingdom Never United" The video idea would mainly cover how geopolitics would have developed differently along with how the world would be a completely different place than what we know it today, and the impact of no longer having a superpower to balance out the Russians and the French along with other European powers!
@@MPbmfm Yeah I know that Denmark and Norway were unified at various times during the viking age, and that they would be united again after the end of the Kalmar Union. I was thinking more if they were united during the viking age and then stayed together, or maybe during/after the Norwegian civil war era :)
Waited for this video so long, glad it's finally here, also, another idea for a video: What if soviet union went to war over Montreux convention with Turkey
What if king Wladyslaw warnenczyk of jagiellon dynasty won the battle of warna (or accepted the peace treaty he was proposed before the battle). At the time of his battle he ruled Poland, Lithuania, Novgorod, Moldavia, Hungary, Czechia, a huge part of other HRE territories and Croatia while still being unmarried (and possibly able to gain more thrones via marriage). After he’s death during this battle this massive personal union was split into many parts with some thrones being gained by his brothers, some by Habsburgs, some conquered during the chaos that occurred after his death and some taken by local nobles. He’s victory in this battle would absolutely destroy the ottoman influence of Europe and even the more moderate peace treaty he broke before the battle would keep him alive (and his massive empire United) while weakening the Turks
I doubt that William the conqueror would succeed, because in our time Harold’s army were tired for a long march having just fought off a invading Norwegian army, which has in an area that is now controlled by Dane-law and so then hardrads army whould have longer to sail or he would not invade at all.
Suggestion: What if Basque whalers discovered America in the early thirteenth century. Considering the Basque set up outposts in the new world in OTL, maybe with a headstart and the main colonisers embroiled in the one hundred years war and the reconqista, the Basque may have a new world monopoly for at least a while
Video suggestion: What if the Vikings escaped to North America and preserved their pagan traditions? (Perhaps pick this up with European colonisers discovering a viking kingdom and having trouble colonising) Whatever you do I'm sure it'll be great though!
Given modern English people are still majority Brythonic Celtic by blood and not Anglo-Saxon, I like that you pointed out that England wouldn't magically become Norse due to small waves of migrations over the centuries.
The matter of French centralization would be dependent on what Normandy does. Normandy itself was already quite powerful and militant despite being a French vassal, almost akin to a Prussia within the French realm. If some Norman duke like William still becomes King of Wessex, his powerbase north may be reduced from our timeline but it still creates just enough of the same historical power struggle that prompted the French kings to bolster their direct control in France, irrespective of whether Normandy actually bends the knee to France on paper. If any conflicts do happen between Norman Wessex and France, I expect Jorvik to play a role similar to Scotland of our timeline, the northern kingdom France guarantees and allies with in order to keep this rival boxed in.
Would be really nice if you did a “what if the first Chinese republic under sun yat sen survived”. Seeing that with your own way of how it would happen would be really cool!
