  • This video was created with the avid watercolorist in mind to address common problems that we encounter. In Todays episode I am addressing the challenge in working from an icon Santa Maria Della Salute. I am looking for some unique to add the the hundreds of Masterpieces done throughout history of this magnificent church. The problem of painting a subject that has been painted by great artists of the past - how to see something new in an oft repeated subject. It starts with observing - observing the subject and finding a passage or view that leads to a unique rendering of the subject. This weeks episode is created around several studies in color and black and white. In the following episode I will portray a more complete version based on my studies...
    Stay tuned.

Thx Sarah - The tonal study gives me a foundation for the color interpretation as well as a second painting :-)

Thank you for the kind words Angie - choose a few of your favorites and start to sketch them , that starts the creative engine

Your thoughts throughout this work are so helpful. Despite having hundreds of photos of great places I have had a hard time finding inspiration for painting. I feel I can look at them again for potential subjects. I’ll watch this one again for that reason, and for technical ideas. I watch your videos often, and learn every time. Thank you for being generous with you talent and your thorough teaching method.

Thank you Gary. The skill I would love to achieve is the ability to look through such a complex, highly detailed building and with an inner eye see the essence of it, know what to focus on, and paint it. This is what you do with such ease. Your Salute is immediately recognizable with just these quick, loose strokes. Pure magic.

Thx Barbara - I’ve found memorizing my subject through drawing and small studies - repetition - gives me the ability to “look through” the complexity...you can do it too!

Gary Tucker You're probably right. I think I'll try, sketching to become familiar with the motif. I have practically the same photo myself.

This beautiful motif gave me the push to take your advice about knowing your subject. Sketch, tonal painting then a 3 colour final painting. My photo was almost the same as yours as I didn't want to copy this time, but a dull day so I had to 'invent' the shadows. I finally produced something reasonable! Thank you for your tireless instructions, Gary.
