Around ten years ago, my minimalism journey began with decluttering some of my things. I felt overwhelmed by the stuff around me, and wanted to simplify. I started tackling the clutter and saving money, time, space and energy in the process. Later on, I noticed that my life began to change in a number of unexpected ways as well. All of which have helped me to become a happier person. So today, I talk about 5 unexpected ways minimalism has made me happier.
    Lots of love,

Yes, I'm definitely both a minimalist and a neat freak, have been so for many years. We had a house fire in 1991. Thank goodness, no one was seriously injured. Insurance required us to count and list EVERY SINGLE ITEM. Oh, my goodness! It really opened my eyes to how much STUFF we had!! And it made me see that family is really the most important.

I would say I’m minimal-ish, striving toward minimalism for 20 years, now. It’s hard when you’re naturally sentimental, share a house with others who aren’t minimalists, are raising a child, etc. I have a minimalist wardrobe, minimal knick-knacks and wall art, have downsized my book collection, etc. But I did recently decide I’m too strict with myself overall and need to allow myself to have for instance some scented candles because they make me feel happier and some holiday decorations.

    I am pretty hardcore minimal
.I don’t have things around that I don’t use nearly every day. I keep all my surfaces clear of all clutter. My clothing is of a similar colour so easily interchanged, and I don’t follow trends. This has helped me not only save money but live mostly anxiety free, as to me clutter exacerbates feelings of stress. I 💖 minimalism.

I find that being content with what we have rather than what we don't have is an effective way to resist accumulating unnecessarily things or stress. Being content doesn't mean giving up on self-improvement, but rather having a state of mind of calm thankfulness while striving to be a better person. Maybe that's why a lot of journaling guides include a section on gratitude. đŸ€”

I checked what are the 3 pillars of minimalism : simplicity, usefulness and clarity.
As I got older I gravitate towards simplicity in all areas, have no love or eagerness to make things complex when you can get things done in a simple way. When I buy or want to buy something, I question its usefulness, which to me means if I would be using it daily and would it in return, add goodness to my life? If yes, I get it. Clarity is like the glue of both things. A cluttered space makes me very uncomfortable now and drives me up the wall... I find it a little bit hard having to share space with someone who is more messy, and the response is.." messy is creative " hahaha, I wonder if there is a tidy version of "messy creativity" ;) Anyway, I don't like labels nor believe in them, but yes i look for simplicity, usefulness and clarity in life and my surroundings!

This is my jam also. ESP simplicity. Idk if it’s me getting older and just tired of things like “chores.” I used to be really bad about buying the latest “wonder cleaning gadget.” I found that the simple basics work for me far easier and better. You know I guess it was like if I needed an instruction manual, or if it’s heavy or clunky machinery...I prob won’t even use it.

I love my spaces being clean, organized, not cramped, and aesthetically appealing. The label of minimalism is not a goal for me, because decluttering is a means to an end. It’s not so much about having as few things as possible, but not having unnecessary or too many things, and about having the things want and need

“Silent messages and emotional labor.” Wow, that truly describes it! Recently I have parted with all of my handbags except 3- a beautiful leather Aigner from the 70s, a Vera Bradley tote, and my Louis Vuitton Speedy I finally decided upon after 20 years of trying to find a preloved one I could afford. I could not enjoy it until I eliminated all the others that did not spark joy. I am now on a digital minimalism journey with a flip phone. Imagine carrying a LV and using a flip phone😂. I am a collector and I am happy surrounding myself with things that I love, so no I am not a minimalist by definition. But I have also reached a certain age and the phrase "you can't take it with you" now resonates louder than it once did. So for the sake of my heirs I am trying to let go of those items that no longer bring me joy to own. I also choose my activities with this same minimalist consciousness. I do more things I want to do and less of the things I think I "should" do.

I would say I am minimal-ish. It’s really hard to be a complete minimalist with a partner and children who are not. But I have to say that in the last 4 years I have gotten rid of at least 70% of my stuff. Just stuff that I was holding onto for “some day”. I used to spend 8-10 hours a WEEK cleaning my whole house and moving around my extra stuff. Now it only takes a short while to clean and so much easier to maintain. You have a responsibility to the stuff that is yours. Responsibility of upkeep, moving it, cleaning it, fixing it, etc. The less you have the less responsibility and the more freedom. Seriously.

My family calls me a minimalist. I love tidy and organized space, so I'm constantly tidying and organizing. I believe myself to be minimal-ish. I have lot of the minimalist habits down after years of practice, BUT I'm still stuff-shuffling ( just moving things around, organizing over and over instead of getting rid of excess). I don't feel at peace yet. Love love love Goodbye Things book. I still have too many things giving me silent to dos. I love staying home, but I feel restless in my home. Irony is- my visitors love my minimal looking home.

I do not consider myself a minimalist. I love variety and abundance with my possessions, such as colorful jeans, shoes, and accessories. That being said, I appreciate the relief I experience when I declutter and let go of what I no longer want or need. I just went through my wardrobe and accessories and was surprised with how much I took out. It’s like shedding skin! Like I’m letting go of an old me. It’s a reflection of how I’ve grown and changed over the years through my own actions and mindset as well as with changing life circumstances. I love the space that decluttering provides, making room for what I really want as well as future items I may acquire. I am happier when I let go. Now for the 30+ years worth of written journals
that’s another story! 🧐😉

Got a crazy story to tell you. I had a flood in my apartment, I lost almost all my stuff
PlayStation, books, movies, etc
I have like nothing left except my tv and my switch.
It’s been two weeks now and I actually feel free. I missed my stuff for the first week or so but I’ve been so much more productive and I feel like I don’t have distractions anymore. I’ve been meditating every night, reading, working on my car, etc
I think it was a blessing in disguise.
We’re so over stimulated with bullshit all the time that we can’t get anything done. We can’t even reach the stage where we even know WHAT we’re supposed to get done.
Strangely enough, my confidence is also higher, I’ve been talking to more women and even getting hit on. This minimalism stuff is almost too good to be true.
    Life is simpler now.

Have for years only bought exactly what I need and never had to declutter as things not working or not fitting are taken out directly and replaced if nessesary. To have a place for everything, is also something hugely importent to me. But that is not really minimalism just commando sense and to like order, I think. What a wonderful video that really captures so much of the true value of minimalism. Makes me smile with contentment just watching it. I can relate to all of the points you made and also to your enjoyment of the book 'Goodbye Things' which I found to be very inspirational and helpful.
I most certainly do consider myself to be a minimalist and am incredibly grateful to have discovered it. Indeed in some ways it has been a lifesaver for me as since the start of the pandemic I've had to spend 99% of my time at home and whilst obviously this is difficult in many ways, thanks to minimalism my home is at least a calm, simple space to be in and not a source of stress and distraction as it was before I discovered minimalism. I really liked the way you described minimalism as 'what do we want more of through less', perfectly said!
The images you chose for this video were beautiful by the way, such an enjoyable watch.

I used to think I was a minimalist, eventually realizing I can live out of a backpack or equally, live in a fairly empty space, having what I can use when I find it useful. So it’s not minimalism for me, it’s external stressors in opposition to what is useful for how I am living at that time. Hi Vera! đŸ™đŸ§˜đŸŸ

Just a couple of months ago I decided to get rid of a lot of stuff. Oh my what a lot of things I collected in the last 25 years as a shopaholic. Up to now there are 3 rooms fully cleared out of things I never use and I already got rid of more than a thousand books too, but there is still a lot to go through. Indeed is everything in my house calling me to do something with it. I still have loads of books left that I don’t want to part with and also a lot of craft material that I also want to keep. I just love reading and crafting so I think it is something I should keep, but I also didn’t buy anything new during these last couple of months. So I don’t think I’m a minimalist, but I try to be as minimalistic as possible for me. At least I’m not a shopaholic anymore 😅.

Great video Vera, I can relate to all 5 of your points. I like the term minimalish for myself. I began my decluttering journey 6 years ago when I retired. I was now spending time at home realized how much stuff we had accumulated and didn’t use. I donated, recycled and trashed so much stuff trying to be responsible in the process. A huge job but so worthwhile. I learned to forgive myself for the excess, and I am much more mindful in my purchases now. I encourage everyone to give it a try, even in one area of their lives. â˜źïž

I am a minimalist in waiting! Watching your videos helped me to start getting rid of the excess stuff, mainly clothes right now. My wife has overheard your videos as I watch them, now she is in the mindset of down sizing. I grew up with my mom having 14 brothers and sisters and so they threw nothing away. Our house was always cluttered and it was just how it was, always cleaned it but still cluttered. Helping her to downsize has been hard but getting there. Growing up that way it was easy just to buy and keep everything, but we started to spring clean and throw things out or donate them. I’m now ready to start to declutter and make things easier. One little step at a time! Thank you!

I generally describe myself as an "aspiring minimalist"- I actually have a "fantasy self" that owns practically nothing, feels incredibly free, travels a lot (since for me, too much physical possessions gets in the way of living a more mobile lifestyle)... ironic since we usually use the term "fantasy self" to discuss material objects we aren't letting go of. For me it's almost the other way around. I still have a lot more stuff than I need but I'm slowly getting there :)

Living out of a backpack is what everybody does on vacation, so you can do it for 2-4 weeks for a time even if you don't do it long-term. Vacationers look on it as something just for the situation, but you can look on it as, "How would I feel about having this many things for a longer period of time?" The answers may lead to reducing your amount of clothing or books or furniture or whatever, or how big a house/apartment you need. Or finding that some kinds of things are more important to you than other kinds of things.

I'd say that where I'm at now with minimalism as a lifestyle is that I don't feel a need to live by any self-imposed rules, and it's okay for me to take it on with a more moderate approach. I'm sure that in the next couple years or so, I'll start evaluating again what minimalism means to me because life isn't stagnant and as we change, so do our priorities. In saying that, what I'm focusing on currently is my relationships and if they're still serving me or not, and this is a tough one for me as I can be a bit naive still in the way I think. Thank you for creating this very insightful video, Vera!

Really great tips and perspective. This is my second major round of "essentializing" my possessions in the last 4 years as I'm heading into a cross-state move (and into a much smaller house).
The last time I let go of so much stuff, it felt AMAZING - literally life-changing - so at least I know from direct experience how good it feels.
Still, it is TOUGH. Man, every little tiny item, from pushpins to pencils, has some straggling emotional attachment.
The faster I take action, the less I overthink, and the more willing I am to let go, the better I feel.
Thanks for the ideas and reminders.. gonna keep going. Big yard sale happening tomorrow :)

I'm definitely not a minimalist, but I notice I have a minimalist mindset in some areas in my life and the number of those areas grows over time. I am conscious about what I buy by asking myself the question: "Do I really need it?", I don't own a lot of duplicates or unnecessary stuff and everything must have it's own place in my apartment. However, I have several hobbies that result in me having a lot of stuff I can't get rid of for now. You might say I'm inspired by minimalism, but change is slow but steady in my case

I’m a minimalist. I believe I come from the opposite end of how usually people get to minimalism. I struggle being a very cheap person. If there is a less expensive option I want to get that one even if I know it’ll malfunction. Don’t go out because it’ll cost more money than I’m willing to spend, skip meals, etc.
This weekend I visited a friend and was a little more expensive than anticipated, however my thought was “this is the whole point of minimalism, reduce things you don’t need or value so you CAN spend on things that you do value”

I'd say minimalism is an attitude, a way of looking at things more than how much stuff you actually keep or decluitter. And there are several kinds of minimalism, some of which contradict each other. The part that resonates most to me is 5:44 "I have the luxury of living below my means". I've never been interested in driving, I've long admired people who can fit all their posessions in a Volkswagen or a few pickup truck loads, I appreciate those who can live out of a backpack although it's not for me, I find many adequate things in thrift shops, and I value a few quality ingredients in my food. So that gave me money to travel in my 20s and 30s, and to save for the future.I'm grateful for that. And grateful that I don't feel the need to have a car or boat or 30" TV or fast fashion. I can just coast somewhat, and I have everything I want, and still save a lot of my income. The biggest luxury I buy is high-quality food ingredients; that's really all I want.
