- What lens should you buy? I asked the same questions when I wasn't quite sure on where to invest my money. There are so many lens choices and variations that it can be pretty overwhelming!
NEW! Lightroom PRESET PACK: sellfy.com/p/QjNY/ - Edit your photos with 15 brand new presets!
I shoot Canon, so I am using Canon lenses as an example for this video because I know them the best. By no means do YOU have to buy canon and I'm not telling you that THESE ARE THE ONES TO HAVE! I am, however, talking about the focal lengths, F stop, and overall use of lenses and what I think 3 questions are you can ask yourself to narrow down your options. So, What lens should you buy? Watch now! Links below from lenses mentioned in video.

Thumbs up for the Bazooka lens! :)
yoooo
Peter McKinnon so much lens, panic attack
Peter McKinnon that thing brings a whole nother level of intensity to shooting your car, your house, your dog, your wife, your kids! lol
Peter McKinnon some day i'm gonna get it, and I will hit someone with it
what lens should i use to shoot photos and videos
*Sees pictures from the 16-35 mm*
*Pulls up amazon*
*Closes Amazon immediately after seeing price*
lmao right!
😂
Older glass is better, stop buying the latest most expensive lenses. That won't make you a better photographer :^) ( not directed at you specifically, just photographers in general)
And lol me too
same here i'm crying
Camera shop: Hey Peter, what lens do you want to buy?
Peter: Yes
when peter says somethings expensive, you know its expensive
I'm going to paint a red line around my Canon lenses to make it look like I have better lenses than I actually do.
then sell them ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Some pros over up there red marking for safety reason but I have thought of doing this too!
Dennis Osipov made my day😂
Already done this long time ago. Now I have 18-55 3.5-5.6 L lens. Also 40D with 5D Mark II strap.
Try a thin red rubber band instead of paint! Also only needs one rubber band that can be interchanged between lenses :-D
Always THE BEST Content.

Quick question!
What would you prefer between a 70-200 f2.8 with a x1.4 extender and a 70-300 f4. Both intended to use for wildlife photography. Do you think the extender compromises the sharpness, focus and quality of the image? I have never used an extender so I’m not sure how good this might work.
100%
Yeah and whenever Peter starts I'm like am I watching Peter or Chris Ramsey
Your comment is 3 years old
Me: saving up for my nifty fifty
Pete: pulling a trolley of L glass
Thank you Christian Bale, u are my favourite actor ever!
Funny as.
Misho Amoli thank you Gareth Bale. Great Footballer. Did not know you were into photography as well
my price range is 0.00 to 1.00
Hilda Leung so?
Is that Bitcoin?
Chuck Walker for sure it must be BTC.
Here'sa lens for your budget jobs.com
hahahahaha
First time i have watched a 15 min video without skipping even a bit... Amazing.
I knowww riiight?? he's a born communicator.. I usually hate enthusiastic people, but he's actually pleasant!!
Dcvbkyrsscbgdsxcgf That's what I'm saying lol
Same here. I even backed up a few times to make sure I got all of the numbers for the suggestions correct so I could go research them more.
I second this!!
damn i even rewinded a bit on some parts to watch again
I bet the guys at Henry's had a hard attack watching you wave that big ass lens up and down, back and forth....poor guys.
I was just thinking the same thing
@@brettfowl1208 me too hahaha
a hard attack
The first lens I put money on is the 50mm 1.8f Prime Lens by Canon for my T6.
I love this lens because not only does it shot beautiful shots for portraits and close ups, it’s limitations really stood out to me as my preferred style of shooting. I wanted wider shots.
So the next lens I got was the 24mm Prime Lens, I get nice wider shots and now I get to shoot my subject in their environment with an 2.8f. So I lose a whole level of f-stop but it opened up a whole different genre of photography for me.
I also recommend to look for used lenses so that you save yourself a couple of bucks, with hopefully little wear to them. Just my experience which hopefully helps another beginner photographer.
That Shelf behind Pete makes this video 100% complete.
wowBhaskar shelf*
Glad you notice, Thanks.
Landscape: Superwide 14mm or 24mm
Macro: 1:1 90mm lens
Street: 50mm prime
Wildlife: 600mm prime sigma(because the canon/nikon one costs $13,000)
Everything else: 70-200
do these recommendations change much for aps-c? as much as I wished to start out ballin with a full frame I ended up grabbing a used d5200 for a decent price. it hasnt even arrived yet but im stoked to start collecting.
I think you can find the same lenses for APS-C cameras. My recommendation is always to use APS-C lenses for APS-C Cameras and FF for FF cameras.
Good Free Photos I own FF and APS-C bodies, and all of my lenses, are L series. They all work top notch, you just have to take crop factor in consideration.
that's true, the L series does work for both.
Forgot 35mm for portrait use.
I got nervous as he swings that lense around
It's a $10,000 lens, too. Holy pants :D
That moment when you don't understand what he's saying but still listen anyways because he's entertaining.
All my professional photo and video needs have been met for the last few years using just the Sigma 35mm f1.4 art lens, the Canon 85mm f1.8 USM lens, and occasionally renting the 14mm, the 16-35mm f2.8 L ii and 70-200mm 2.8 L ii if the job requires it. That being said, with the shift towards Sony for video work, I do find myself looking at the plethora of lenses on the market once again, wishing I was 10 grand richer. Damn you, 4K!
I had the Sigma 35 f/1.4 Art but since I'm on APS-C I replaced it with the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 Art to save me switching lenses, and haven't missed it since. As incredible as the 35 Art was, the 18-35 is just as sharp and the bokeh is a lot better.
Ozzy what are your thoughts on the 18-35? More specially for photography, been looking at it for quite a while and am currently selling my 10-18 and 50mil to buy it :)
try out the newer Canon 85 mm f1.4. you will never ever ever want to touch the 1.8 anymore.
I’ve been doing amateur photography for years and getting into video now. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve revisited this video. Thank you for helping me continue my passion, Pete
Great to hear man! How are things going?
Your videos are so fresh and binge-worthy. Congrats Peter from a fellow Ontarian.
LucasGrowsBest Binge-worthy! Yes, and NOT cringe-worthy, which is awesome 😎
Hey Peter, I'm a first-year film student and am finding your vids so helpful in support of the stuff I'm learning in lectures. Thanks so much! Keep them coming! :)
I'm amazed that this stuff is hard even for academic film students. I'm just an amateur that wants to take great vacation photos. lol
just found your channel because I'm really starting to love photography, and I can already tell the videos and information you put out are gonna help me tremendously as I try and figure this stuff out.
I'm not even that into photography and I love your videos! They're so well put together and look really professional :D
*looks at the price*

Ryan you're my friends favorite youtuber!
wow ryan you deserve a lot more subs. Also great video peter
coming clutch....squad.
please stop.
Every time I watch I start to understand photography more and more! Thank you!
Great vid! When I got my first Canon, I started with the 24-70mm and 70-200mm L-series lenses. Together, they gave me solid coverage. I’ve since added lenses, but these two are still major “go tos” for me.
This video actually taught me a lot and I want to thank you for that! I love photography but I've basically taught myself and some of the things you say in your videos sounds like another language but slowly but surely I will understand more and more about the technology and language of photography. I shoot with a Nikon D3200 and I feel as though I've captured some awesome photos with it but I got that camera not knowing shit about photography but at this point in my life I am looking into buying a Sony a7s ii or a Canon of some sort
"This could be a hat for a small child".... LOL love it
I've been doing photos as a hobby for about 1 year now. I got the standard started kit Canon Rebel T6 with the basic glass. I picked up a 50mm 1.8 and can't get enough of the lense. The versatility for portraits is awesome
Thanks for breaking it down and talking to the newbie's!! Greatly appreciated.
Thank you Peter ! Today I switch from Nikon in to Canon full frame and honesty your video be helpful ! Keep doing good job !
BAZOOKA LENS FOR THE WIN!
This was beyond useful information. So to be clear, 24-70 mm is like a sweet spot? Someone correct me if I am wrong...
Michael Levette yea, always depends tho. I use a 12-40 mm f2.8 for most of my stuff but 24-70 is also a very good range
Finally, after months of research I know all I need thanks to this video, thank you Peter!
some of the best content I have found...Literally learning everything I know about photography from this dude
You're the best! BTW I love your videos and personality! 💖
Thank you Jon Snow! I think that 16-35mm looks like can do the job really well for vlogging 👍
I think I've watched this video 3 or more times and it always helps me more and more for everytime! Great work!!
When he mentioned the urban exploration part, that was exactly what I am looking for so that you so much Peter
Wooowwww thanks for the quick easy illustration using Matty. Even him and his face were made handsomer lol
That part summarised the whole video for me.
Dude you are just amazing!! You inspire me so much, i just wanna buy my dream lens and go out and get some awesome pictures.
Thanks man! For these outstanding nice videos! :D
Pete... Thanks for being sharp and helpful. You are one of the few on CZcams who are actually any help with stuff like this!
This is one of the most insightful and concise video's about this particular subject on CZcams. Thank you.
Content at it's best! Thanks pete
10:45 “you could assault someone with this”🤣🤣🤣
By far the best “what lens is best” video I’ve seen. Lenses are tools, choose the best tool for the job. Simples.
looking back at this now mid 2021, gets me excited. His videography improved so much and it gives me hoping know my stuff may not be great today, but it might be great with 4 years more of experience lol.
Peter, I need to thank you. I was re-watching this video moments before window shopping lenses on Amazon I cannot afford and discovered their prime day camera pricing fiasco. I got my first full frame (6Dii) and the 24-70 f2.8 for a combined $200. It would have taken me well over a year to earn that. It's because of this video that I wholeheartedly thank you, Peter.
Pete, do you plan to travel to any place any time soon.. If you do.. I would love to see you make a travel vlog in ur style.. 👍
Sooner than you think!
Can't wait!
Peter McKinnon looking forward to travel vlogs

Is it weird that I love the way you say “out”?
Really helpful video, I’ve learned a lot lenses. Thank you.
I've been shooting for way too long without truly understanding lenses. Thank you for the helpful videos!

Just seeing this, in 2019, STILL RELEVANT!! 👊👊👊👊👊👊👊 Thanks!
Peter you're great photographer!!!!! i love it
Hi Peter, Dope channel. You're an inspiration to us all. Cheers. QQ. Thoughts on 24mm 1.4l version mki vs mkii? Is it worth the bigger price point? This would be for travel, portrait and landscape photography primarily.
Make a video on cheap lens dude....
agree
Buy the Canon 50mm 1.8
Yep the thrifty fifty is so good for the price
nifty fifty
Sankalp Sadhwani yes we need it
Like the video, nice job explaining in this short video for a very large subject to explain. Nice job pm
Thank you Peter I am learning so much from you and all the while totally entertained!!!
I highly recomend the canon 50mm 1.4 and the 35mm 2.8 as all around prime lenses
i love your videos always learning something new i bought a camera 2 months ago and now i do photography and video and im 13 years old and im already getting some jobs thank you so much for your amazing videos so keep posting your amazing videos always learning more
and what do you suggest for photography and video
Nikon body. For budget photographers Nikon gives more features in cheap crop sensor DSLRs, better build quality and much better sensors. I have over 55,000 shots on my D3300 including sports, portraits, northern lights, the milky way, scenery, etc... It also takes great video (1080p 60FPS). Many 3rd party lens manufactures such as Tamron, Tokina, Sigma, Rokinon etc... make good lenses (sometimes better than Canon and Nikon) at much lower prices.
Same, I’m 13 and have just started and photography is definitely something I’m gonna do for the rest of my life, maybe not as a job maybe a hobby but I absolutely love it. It just seems so confusing for a young kid with all of the things I’m supposed to know to take one photo but I’m taking it upon me to learn as much as possible.
Sarrib ROX I'm almost 16 now. I feel you 😂
*gasp*
This dude is always dropping some good nuggets... Thank you!
This was incredibly informative!
IVE Used The 50MM F1.8 For A Few Days Now! Im Pretty Happy With It ! Maybe You Should Include That Too!!!
Everytime I walk into henrys I have to leave my wallet in the car
SAME! "I'll take one of everything please!"
haha yes!
jackmodz hah
jackmodz 😂😂
where do you park your car...? ;-)
thanks for this video man, Im a student at TFS and i finally bought myself a canon rebel T3 and want my shots to look as fantastic as possible, this video was very helpful, see ya around man.
You are really helpful in explaining the different lenses.
What would you recommend for travelling as a all-time-on lens?
Especially more the 24-27 or 24-105?
16-35
In terms of image quality, would you say the canon 16-35 is better than the sigma 18-35?
Another very informative video Peter. I have been learning a ton from your channel and can't wait to use your tips and ideas to help kick start my career in film making and photography! Thank you.
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for!
I love this channel very much it's so entertaining! Peter is so funny guy as well :)
By the way the music is fantastic! Does any1 know its track ID?
I know it's from Epidemic Sound's website, but how can I find it there? Any suggest?

Worth every single sub and more Great content and infectious personality!!
LEGEND!!!
heya Peter, first of all i love your content. it's awesome. I have a question though. I'm an amateur Photographer, it' s the best hobby there is butt sometimes i just don't have any inspiration. Could you make a video about how, where and when you get inspiration for your photos what do you do when you don't know what to make or do! I would love to see that. thanks very much and keep up the good work !!!
When you want inspiration for pictures, go on google and type in movie poster. If youre searching for inspiration for some videos, go on youtube and search for people like casey neistat, sam kolder, or me ;D (just kidding). There are so many ways to get more inspiration, i mean you have the internet Bas.. let me know if it helped you :)
Louis Kellner The movie poster idea is genious! Thanks man!
I was shouting "please put the lens down " when you was waving that 200 to 400 around. 😂 you just about gave me a heart attack. Love the video like always man.
love these videos - they are amazingly helpful. Really kinda awesome...
Thanks Peter, I've been wondering for so long. I finally know now.
Best video ever !! 😍😍😍
