I'm so happy you enjoyed this piece!
Yoko Shimomura is one of my favorite game composers. FFXV is definitely a hot mess in terms of story telling, but the emotional core is so strong and the score just amplifies it to amazing heights.
The soundtrack has never left my iPod/Spotify rotation and I'm pretty sure I've killed a few sets of headphones with how I max out the volume for a majority of the playtime.

Suffers from the same thing Wow's story does. You gotta dig up everywhere else but the game to really get the story. And the combat... Give me the full story in the game and don't start me on half way through about what's happening in the world and then leave bits out that happen on the side.
It's the best simulation of drunk friends having a bang of a time for sure with what you don't remember about the story/world happenings if you only play the game.
It's not a bad game. But a major disappointment when you consider the wait from the last major title to this one for what we got.

Square-Enix I think has the problem of trying to take too many money making trends to just make a coherent game stand on its own. They really blew a budget on a sub-par yet still enjoyable movie, a small anime mini series, and a damn mobile game. Not to mention the fact the game had a miserable development. I absolutely love 15, but it's basically poorly implemented and left unfinished due to publisher issues.

FF14 and FF11 are the two MMOs in the series so they have regular new content including new tracks. FF14 adds about 20 new tracks every 3 months so it has a huge library. The other FFs are single player games so outside of some DLC, the entire OST is generally part of the original game. FF14's had about 10 years of continual new content including new music.

To answer your question, this music plays at a few climaxes in the main story of FF15. Honestly "Apocalypsis" is a fitting name as those moments are epic in proportion but also surrounded by some pretty extreme devastation. It's the kind of song where you enjoy the adrenaline while it lasts, because when it's over... Things aren't going to be the same.

  • @DameonStarflame
    @DameonStarflame Před 2 lety +28

I personally love this game, flaws and all. It's pretty much the only non-MMO Final Fantasy that I can confidently say that I've completed more than once. I think I'm up to my fourth or fifth run through of the game (twice with the original, a few times with the Royal Edition). The actors did a great job selling the brotherhood in the game, and in fact two of the actors stream together and do live shows at conventions together, and you can feel it in the game. Yoko Shimomura knocked the soundtrack out of the park, though if you have the Kingdom Hearts soundtracks and XV on the same playlist, it can get a bit muddier at times which album is which.
The theme that starts the game off officially and is the end credits for XV is Florence & The Machine's take on "Stand By Me", and it's a beautiful take on the song and it fits perfectly with the plot of the game. Doubt it's react-able due to the DMCA, but give it a listen if you haven't already heard it at some point.

"Does this mean I have to choose which one is better?" Absolutely not, you string all of the versions together and then you transcend to another plane of admiring Yoko Shimamura!!
My request might be a bit too similar now, but then again, I've just given you another version to like!
In regards to feeling 'bigger' than 14, I totally get you! 14 is constrained a bit in that Soken has to compose his fights in phases and loops and generally had less funding? But Yoko's Speciality is heavily narrative, epic pieces that are made for Single player games instead of MMOs :D
If you're interested, there's her entire performance at London Abbey Road Studios with the London Philharmonic Orchestra that was just- man it's so good. I watch it over and over because she's so good on the piano haha.

XIV recently got an expansion and has exploded in popularity so it's basically the FF that is trending at the moment. It being an ongoing game means more people are finding out about the music and many people have been streaming it lately as well so it's reaching a further audience.

It hasn't been officially confirmed, but it is very likely that Soken is composing ff16. His style is all over the trailer that was released last year.
I recommend checking it out because it will give you an indication of what Soken can do with a bigger budget and support. Ff14 will also get better treatment in the future due to its rise this year so we may see "bigger" tracks there too.

Most XIV fans will have a deep appreciation for music from the FF series in general. No matter how you feel about any particular game in the series, the music is not typically a point of contention; it's almost always of the highest quality in the industry.
The reason for the volume of XIV requests is probably just 'cause there's such a wide variety of sounds XIV has to offer. Somnus and Apocalypsis Noctis are the identifying sounds of XV, even if it has tracks that stray from them tonally, whereas deciding on a musical identity for XIV is like nailing Jello to a tree. XIV fans want to give you the full picture, and that takes a lot of songs to do, lol.
XIV is also currently the most relevant title with the next expac coming out.

Ah, yes!! I LOVE this game's soundtrack!
FFXV is hands down my favorite FF game. Not because it's the strongest in some individual metric (though musically and emotionally it comes VERY close), but because the sum of its parts is just an unforgettable experience for me. I've played 7, 10, 12, 13, 3... none of them hit me as hard as 15 did.
As for some of your questions:
Is it an RPG or an action game? It's the first non-MMO FF game to fully step away from turn-based elements and embrace a fully action-combat system. It's not perfect and you can tell it's their first time doing it, but it was fun!
Is Noctis a boss? Nope! A couple minor variations of the song play when facing two of the major bosses: Titan and Leviathan. They are some of the most visually-satisfying and epic-looking set piece fights in gaming period IMO.
FFXV has SO many incredible tracks. Off the top of my head a few more i can recommend are:
    - Omnis Lacrima (Boss theme)
    - The Fight is On! (Battle theme for Duscae region)
    - Hammerhead Theme
    - Prayer of the Oracle (Episode Ardyn DLC title theme)
    - In the Light of the Crystal (Prelude arrangement for FFXV)

    FFXV is... complicated...
It was originally conceived as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, with development hell and company internal changes rebranding it into Final Fantasy XV. With a change of directors and core themes etc.
A lot of people have mixed feelings on this, in terms of gameplay FFXV was a rushed game at launch with many seams and holes. Throughout the years it was improved with DLC patches, but it still left a bit of bitter feeling, but development hell continued and the DLCs abruptly ended, with the director leaving the project and company.
I have mentioned in my comment under the somnus video, imo, Somnus and Apocalypsis Noctis were sort of written for two different games. I'm curious what do you think on the differences between the two tracks, now that you've listened to them both.

Yoko Shinomura is the composer, she even composed music for Street Fighter II. Fun trivia about Street Fighter II that not a lot of people know. During production, Shinomura watched Top Gun and subconsciously remixed a song from the movie into a character's stage theme. The theme even inspired the rest of the character's creation, including his backstory. But since Capcom was so afraid of lawsuits at the time, instead of making her go back and make a new theme, they instead swapped the stage theme with another character. So basically, Ken's theme, which sound's a lot like Mighty Wings, by Cheap Trick was originally Guile's theme while Guile, his stage, and his backstory with Charlie was based on Top Gun.

I have fond memories of messing with my friend with that. Sitting in my college game room, playing XIV. We're chatting about the world because he doesn't know much about the game so we're just talking and then I pull out the car and he breaks off from what he's saying to go "Ok what the f***? About getting a lot of Final Fantasy XIV requests and not as many of the other ones (I don't know if anyone else already borught this up in comments yet, I didn't do a thorough read):
The truth is, Final Fantasy XIV is pretty close to counting as a gigantic crossover of every other Final Fantasy, on top of being its own game. It has it's own narrative, but it constantly borrows bits and pieces from other games of the franchise. There was a special timed event recently in which Noctis comes to the world of XIV and you have to help him back, so several compositions from XV (including Apocalypsis Noctis, exactly as you heard it here) are featured in XIV, and somebody could've just as well made you listen to this while watching more XIV footage fighting at Noctis' side.
As a huge fan of XIV, and having played other games of the franchise as well, I personally think that it's not about not liking the other games as much, and instead that we're just the most vocal and passionate corner, because to like Final Fantasy XIV isn't to love only XIV but to kind of love ALL of them, and we can still make you experience other Final Fantasy music even with XIV--just that it's often been put through the Soken filter and made into something new.
(Which, if you'll allow me a low-priority suggestion as a non-Patreon... You could consider comparing the original Eternal Wind or Crystal Tower Theme from Final Fantasy III by Nobuo Uematsu, and then listen to Soken's re-orchestrated and piano versions of Eternal Wind, plus Shattered as the Syrcus Tower's Battle Theme in Final Fantasy XIV.)
Thank you for all your reactions! I found you roughly a month ago when you started listening to XIV music, but I've also peeked at some of your other ones. Despite often rocking out and headbanging to recommendations and suggestions, I love how calm you look and sound before starting and when giving your assessment afterwards. This is a wonderfully chill channel and I'm glad I found you!

FFXV is a action rpg with flowing combat. Sadly it was plagued with development issues as it was going to be a XIII spin off as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis world but latter being broken off to its own thing. The whole XV scope was HUGE! Spanning the main game, a movie that takes place during the first chapter of the game + a handful of story DLC chapters, and 6 part anime that takes place quite a few years before hand, and mobile game that mirrored an ingame game, AND LASTLY a little pixel game about Noctis's father while in his younger days... woo... the game has its flaws but I still love it and how it plays.

FFXV is one of my favorite FFs, granted I came late to the party and I prefer real time combat rather than turn-based combat, but I still stand FFXV is one of the most emotional FFs for me.

I played this game just last year for the first time and it was amazing. Absolutely. I don't like the older final Fantasy because of the turn based combat but this game was great. People who played it at launch say it was pretty bad but I can say anything about that cause they fixed pretty much most of the issues and I had an amazing experience with this game.

FFXIV has so many songs so there is something for everyone. XV has songs but I've mostly forgotten them (battle theme is good tho (side note on the music on XIV, the composer does Kingom Hearts music as well, might wanna check it out or play the games)) but if you want something fresh but not so fresh then look up FFIX, battle theme, boss theme, dark messenger, beatrix theme, anything goes on FFIX. I might be a bit biased because FFIX was the first Final Fantasy game that I ever played.

FFXV is a game that I would have loved A LOT if they had put all the DLCs in the main game. Especially the Ignis DLC is so much character development for Noctis (the main character) himself, imo. And that sadly was extra content that not everyone had access to :(
But the soundtrack is so amazing and I love seeing you reacting to it! Especially because you have already heard another version of it! The FFXV soundtrack does feel like it has much more orchestral feeling making it bigger than XIV :D

I love XVs music. I promptly bought the OST once I started playing XV. I just love the music in this game. Listen to it frequently in my car. And I love this game. In my top 5 with VII Series, XIII Series,VIII, and X. 😁
And Noctis is the major Protagonist of XV. You actually play as Noctis throughout the game save for one part you have option to play as Gladio and the DLCs of course. XV is RPG and this plays during boss fights like against Leviathan for example. 😊

If you want to know what the latin choir is singing here are the translated lyrics:
Through you alone there will be worship.
I am the one who sends the stone and rules all lives.
    Heaven, earth, aversion.
    Great, small, return.
    Strong leadership and command.
That binds to the voice of light.
With all full light, the end of apocalypse.
That which devoured all life, darkness.
    Evil increases bringing death.
    For! For! For! For!
The mighty king, warrior, with the sword in his hands.
Battles in virtue, survives the enemy.
    But death comes first.
It is certain that it will come!
To all! To all! To all!
Now is the time, this is a place where we are established, finally, each of us!
    All!

Noctis is the protagonist you play as. This song plays against the final boss, essentially your final chance to stop the apocalypse.
As a whole, FFXV is the one Final Fantasy game that I actually think SHOULD have been developed as a trilogy.
The first part covering the initial area.
The second part expanded up until the big "Empire Strikes Back" moment of the group being broken apart.
The third part being fully fleshed out "World of Darkness" with the eventual return of the hero to the climactic battle.
If it had been planned, storyboarded, and announced as a trilogy set from the start it could have worked and they could have told a complete story, as well as the sales keeping revenue flowing to further work on the rest of the game. Normally I'm not a fan of the multi-release Final Fantasy games, but XV actually really would have benefitted from it.

FF15 is an interesting one to talk about. It has a lot of baggage from being in Development hell for years. It started its life as FF13: Versus but was eventually split out of the FF13 universe and made into its own story. I hated the magic system in it, but as a story, its quite good. It's a Road Trip story about brotherhood and the heavy weight of destiny. I would recommend it as a narrative experience. Make sure you get the patch that fixes one of the chapters. It's an Action RPG that tried some things that are innovative. I personally enjoyed it, but it's not my favorite game in the series. My personal favorite is a LITTLE more decisive in the form of FF8. 8 is a Love it or Hate it game. But I would strongly recommend giving FF15 a shot if you have 100 hours to sink into a narrative. A LOT of the music has a sense of scale. Check out Leviathan's theme in FF15 if you want to have a visual sense of scale.
Also, quick note: FF14 and Soken hold the world record for most tracks composed for a single video game so... That's why there's so many 14 tracks. And it gets bigger every year. There's like... 5 or 6 albums for the game on Spotify.

FF XV is an orchestral masterpiece on it's own, way above all other soundtracks in matter of monumental/majestic themes. It's kind of music that you go to Philharmony or Theater for a big orchestral concert. It's very ambitious on it's own, but the game gameplay and build was not up to the par with music, so that's why people often tend to talk less about it :)
There are plenty of favourites, full ost basically, but to mention one - Valse Di Fantastica - has an amazing feel to it ;)

The actual song is only 2 minutes long and loops ingame. The original version has a small loop section which replaces the normal end to make the transition of the repeat smoother. You can also hear it in the OST version which repeats once. The version you listened to seems to be looped by the uploader which sounds a bit weird (at 3:24). Just something that I noticed immediately as I'm used to the OST version.
By the way there is also "Apocalypsis Aquarius" which is pretty much the same song but with some of the piano parts replaced with electric guitars.

I can't say i didn't like 15 since i spent 115 hours in the original release, but it definitely got better in the Royal/Windows Edition (final edition). The original release had serious pacing issues, while the Royal edition didn't fix all of it, it was basically impossible considering Square asked you to both watch an Anime and a full Cinematic release movie to get the entire story, but it did improve it.
Noctis is the protagonist, and its an Action JRPG.

I am a huge Final Fantasy fan, having grown up on the more universally beloved entries (those being VI, VII, IX, X, and XII). I waited for around ten years for this game to come out, due to its infamously hellish production, and hoped it would be great. And, on launch I was a bit disappointed with the game. That said, I have played it pretty consistently since its release five-and-a-half years ago and I gotta say that it has become one of my top five favorite entries in the series. It's so endearing, the characters are charming, the atmosphere being welcoming, hell . . . even the intro to the game says "A Final Fantasy for old fans and first-timers." It's just a great game if you want to enter the series. It is also just great on it's own merits. The characters, voice cast, and music are probably my favorite components. The story was good after some of the tweaks, but I would have liked if they placed the bits they stored in the film, anime, and other bits into the game as well. They should have just lengthened the story period, as it felt way too short. I could have standed at least ten more hours of story. It would have made it truly epic. Hell, had they done that this game would be a definite contender for top dog of the series. But alas, it shall remain in the "underrated, but still great" category that some of the other entries fall under. Truly unfortunate.

Second commentary (because I had not finished watching the video with the first)
I always thought it was weird too that you reacted to all those FF XIV's songs and almost no songs from other FFs, because all the FF have amazing OSTs (maybe not X-2).
That means that you haven't been exposed to Nobuo Uematsu that much, this guy is a litteral legend in the industry ! He did all the main FF's OST until X (and most of spin-offs of that same period) You must check it out ! I don't know wich one to recommand of his work, there is so many cult songs !
Clash on the Big bridge - To Zanarkand - Fleeting Dream - You are not alone - Don't be afraid - Those who fight - Those who fight further - J.E.N.O.V.A - One Winged Angel - The Landing - The Promise - Searching For Friends - Liberi Fatali.
And so much more ! All those I just cited are classics among classics, and I forgot so much !
Otherworld too ! It's not from Nobuo Uematsu, but just because it's the first real metal music used in FF (Intro of the X) I think you would love it ! The legend said that Rammstein did this song, and a lot of people thought this for a long time ! But not at all, it was some quite unknown guy.

Really loved FF15. The only downside to me was how it skipped time or rather the route they took as their take on “maturing” the cast and progress the story but I will be Frank, out of ALL the hype songs before fights in FFs, NONE made me get as hyped as the apocalypsis songs prior to some fights. It made the whole battle and feel so much more vibrant. Amazing game and astounding score.
