True, the only one you cannot equip is the master matchlock which requires artisan 10 I believe. You can use the lifeskill buff scrolls to allow you to use an artisan matchlock with crappy gear
There are birds (seagulls?) you can shoot at velia and the nearby islands. Nobody really does it but you need it for 1 or 2 of the adventure logs (bartiali? I forgot) and the hunting questline, You can use the equipment tailoring coupon on the hunter's clothes from the vendor (or from hitting hunting artisan or something) and equip it as an outfit if you want some extra exp. You can also equip one of those questline outfits (grunil/hercules might etc) you get from doing the balenos to mediah main quests for +2 attack speed (or the serendia soldier outfit for a very cheap +2 movespeed) if you need the attack speed.

You can use a Karanda Heart to get an extra crystal slot on a budget. They're usually on the market and cost 1/40th the price of a Garmoth. That said, it should probably come as one of your last upgrades.
Well you can't use failstacking so you basically just brute force enhance them. If you want you can try building aegis pity on other manos clothes of the same enhancement level (doesn't have to be manos hunters) Hunting is also one of the best ways to get the LS black gems too. You get a ton of them hunting and you can trade the hunting proc item for black gem fragments instead of xp/contr
Whale hunting: Top 20 parties get loot from whales, so we're always good about filling parties for maximum people. More people = more damage = quicker kills = more loot.
Another thing. You can equip higher tier machlock if you reach certain tier with mastery as well i believe
