AC-bu is an animator unit formed by Toru Adachi and Shunsuke Itakura, celebrating their 20th career anniversary in 2019. Their work spans over psychedelic music videos, commercials and animations that all share the unit’s concept of providing an unexpected, strange feeling to its audience.
The pair will take us to a Royal Host in the Yoga Area, which served as a location in one of their segments for Bobunemimimi, derived for the manga Pop Team Epic and one of the unit’s most acclaimed works. They will tell us how they incorporate locations into their work as we follow them to the Futako-Tamagawa river banks, which appeared in the animated music video they produced for the band group_inou for their song HEART.
The unit will explain the philosophy behind their unique work, far from the traditional concepts of animation.

In my opinion some of the most creative people on the planet. Videos by AC-Bu look like nothing else, and to think they learned everything on their own, rebuilding their standards each attempt, in a country where animation is so massive and industrialized. Their videos are incredibly silly but the artistry beyond it is incredibly unique
Such a huge inspiration. They are a great example of dismissing the rules and making your own and as someone who struggles with comparing his work constantly to others, that's such an important lesson.

Came here after watching the Hellshake Yano episode from Pop Team Epic S2. They did an amazing job on it and they’re segments are one of my favorite parts of the show as a whole.

I love these guys! This is the way animation should be transformed, I mean in a way to stretch the posibilities if animation as art. Without the rigidity tho, absolute genius.

Great video! These guys are really interesting, and I love how they started to talk about breaking out of the status quo style, breaking from constraints of trad animation by not learning the basics, using alternative tools. I enjoyed how they alluded to also drawing on previous manga traditions (Garo magazine for example, heta-Uma style, king terry etc). Very interesting work!

the timing of this upload is so weird because I’ve been watching two different music videos late that feature their animation and I didnt even know they were both done by the same studio.
Powder has got a lot of attention recently so maybe that's the reason?
