Every year in schools we do lockdown drills to prepare for these sorts of things. They use to be just turn off lights and sit in a corner, but now we're taught to defend outselves. On college campuses there are bluelights so you can contact campus police if you don't feel safe or need help.

It is quite saddening that even living in Europe the meme is instantly recognizable due to how often American school shootings happen. I remember recently reading it somewhere that due to Covid the amount of school shootings had gone down. Like yes that makes sense, but it's also extremely sad that it took a global pandemic for it to drop.

@@anastasial7687 I won't even blame mental health for it. Most people with mental illness hurt themselves, not other or random people. Don't villify mental illness, it's not always the case. I don't blame the shooters for thinking of doing it I blame them for doing it. The people they hurt don't deserve it and it's also not gun control that's the problem a pistol would do the same as the AR. Those kids are sick in the head because of something at home or at school. It's sad why they do what they do. There was a threat at a middle school (11-14) today in my town. It's crazy. The Florida shooting in 2018 was my highschool rival school, I used to be there all the time. On top of that, the school is in a predominantly white wealthy area that's why the shooting was absolutely *SHOCKING*. If you said a school in my county got shot up you would *NEVER!* say that school. If anything I would've said my school. The way the school is design it's so EASY to get on campus unnoticed so I do see why that was able to happen. It's just all so sad ...I can't imagine witnessing my classmates & friends die .

Its horrible, people also instantly blame guns rather than the system, do you think a kid gets up one day and says you know what i wanna go kill a bunch of kids. Its usually their home life and how theyre treated at school. They want revenge for those who have wronged them or hurt them so they go all in to kill them. Its so sad that people do these things for no good enough reason.

I was suppose to be there but plans ended up being cancelled. But with El Paso being such a tight community we all felt the pain even though most of us weren't blood related. If you are paying attention and you don’t have your head up Fox News or Alex Jones’ a** then you would understand shootings are are almost a daily occurrence in the U.S. It’s just that the news either doesn’t bother to report on all of them unless there’s enough of a death count to attract readership/viewership or they just ignore the carnage all together since it doesn’t fit the neo conservative narrative within their propaganda.
This European has more empathy for our fellow Americans than the brain dead and blood thirsty right wing will ever muster up. You guys like to dry hump the flag all day but you can’t muster up the patriotism to care about the lives of your fellow Americans? This person is trying to convey that our children and babies shouldn’t live in never ending mortal terror that they could be brutally gunned down like an animal by a lunatic wielding a weapon of war. It’s called terrorism for a reason and it’s the schools who are on the frontlines and that are being invaded by these radicals. Just because the vast majority of these domestic terrorist acts are committed by white men will never change what they truly are. Living in fear for your life everyday because you could easily be a victim to a ballistic attack IS gun violence. Just because the shootings aren’t directly occurring to the children they still see on the news, are forced to run drills at school, hear about their school receiving death threats, and fundamentally sense that the adults in their life either won’t or can’t protect them from that ever present threat. Assault rifles against our smallest and most vulnerable members of society is a quick death. The psychological and emotional violence inflicted upon the developing mind and soul due to the way our children experience this naked and constant threat is a long and agonizing death of the mind, body and spirit. I know this life, I have lived this life. Now I see the next generation being traumatized just as my generation was.
No child should have to with any thought of mass gun violence EVER; let alone within the very institutions that are supposed to be protecting our children. Why should this even be argued, let alone be said? Wake up Karens, the rest of America who isn’t crazy and the rest of the world see you lunatics as the laughing stock of the world. Please, americans just want to focus on guns because they want to ignore from the fact they let half a million people die from corona and have an obesity/health care crisis that sees millions dead from easily preventable deaths everyyear. The guns are a distraction, youre more likely to know someone who died from jerking off with a belt around their neck then to know someone who died in a spree shooting. And everyone in my country knows someone who died of corona, but wearing a mask is literally still optional in many places.

The higher the grade level, the less seriously it was taken. In middle school, we would actually get to the corner and be quiet. American public schools have monthly drills for like tornados or fires and shooting drills are also done. Procedure is to lock the door, turn off the lights, and then press everyone into a corner the farthest away or in a blind spot. Teachers would also give instructions at the beginning of the year of what we would do if it happened during their class. One year my English teacher had a metal bat in her closet and said that someone would have to climb on top of this cabinet by the door and then hit the shooter with the bat if he came in. Then we would throw the textbooks at him because they were like two pounds each. Then the chairs and desks. My math teacher that same year was a black belt in karate and had a bo staff in her closet and told us “if a shooter comes through that door I will fight like hell for you guys” Sad thing is we almost had one😔 A guy was found to have a gun in his backpack and his friends knew but didn’t tell anyone until almost noon. He was in the room right beside mine when they found out... The school sent a call out to parents and let them pick us up early if they wanted and my mom was already crying by the time I got to the car. She’s never hugged me tighter than that day.

i remember when a shooting happened in another state our professor was warning us to remember where the exits to the outside of the buildings are(our campus is built kinda like a maze, its really weird, i often got lost in my first year). anything could happen at any time and sometimes the people armed dont even have guns, could be walking around with a knife(happened in my college) or something else. the best way to keep yourself safe is to know where you can escape if absolutely necessary

It’s interesting because it’s way more worthwhile to act like you’re not in the room when in a university type campus; because, unlike with elementary, middle, and high schools, there’s a lot more flexible schedules and many rooms won’t be used at the same time as others. It feels really useless in schools like the aforementioned because they use almost every class unless it’s a lunch/recess period.

The first meme sadly makes all too much sense. We almost had a shootout one day, but thankfully the guy was caught before hand. It is really scary when you are in lockdown, hoping that you live to see the next day. Or even lockdown drills; it’s scary but sadly necessary. I also never understood why some people would take it as a joke and just laugh during lockdown drills, like if someone actually was shooting up the school and heard us, we could be dead.

People think we don’t take the situation seriously as students but don’t understand that most of us joke about it to take off the fear and seriousness of it. The parents and other adults don’t understand how terrifying it is to fear for our lives everyday. How easily someone could walk in with a gun and no one would be able to stop them. I wanted to pretend it wouldn’t happen, I didn’t want it to be real. But I was also 13 when I sat on the kitchen table, reading school reports about how many times they caught a student hiding a knife. How many times they possibly got away.
From elementary to high school, we have these drills, drilled into our head. Some teachers would joke and say ‘this is my hiding spot, don’t take it,’ but everyone knew they meant it. It’s dark but we try our best.

We have drills in school for shootings. They'll either announce that we're having a lockdown or say "mr.green" is here. Then we have to huddle in a corner of the classroom that's out of view of the windows or doors. We have to pull the curtains turn off the lights, lock everything, then barricade the door with desks or book shelves. A police officer then comes through the school and tries to enter each classroom after he goes through they tell everyone the lockdown is over and you go back to learning. Also I live in Connecticut and we had parents from sandy hook come to our school and talk about an anti bullying campaign. It's awful to see a grown man in tears. Really hits you when you're a kid/teenager.
