That imagery ! Truly Indian this is. The shape of the village was like a fish which was changed into a lion..An obvious reference to the courage and how the village adapted. The birth of Ravi is straight out of Mahabharata with Sun-God bestowing her with a son 'Karn.' Mother is still sleeping coz she wasn't able to see through the ascetic and his intentions..when she finally realized it..she ended it by killing him although he trapped Bitti in his last moments. The old village vibe and the cult of banyan tree is about the obsession of things around you. The fairies which played under their wing were around the violet steam and ultimately it was eaten accidentally. A girl child reference for me I was.
I am surprised to read that you could see so many references in it.

Thanks to a FB post, 'The Most Respected Indian Filmmaker Internationally Is Someone You've Never Heard Of!' (Jamuura blog) made me want to see his films. I'm stunned by the conceptualizing, imagery and storytelling. Magical.

Narration could be a bit better. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but the disaffected tone takes you out of the story.
that's an interesting point you made, in his book on cinema, dutta talks about the concept of vakrokti in sanskrit poetics, literally meaning an oblique element which broadly speaking, produces a tonal contradiction to the dominant emotion of a representation, a kind of subversion that as per dutta is used to jolt the spectator towards new recognitions and understandings. the choice to take away what is expected of narration or what it normally embodies performs a similar function of undermining the heightened expression of the tone or its lack thereof (^disasffected^) and relegating it to a secondary interest, the primary being the apparent automatism of its form, camera stitches different temporal realities into the seamless whole, the prophet weaves in and out of the stories, narrative time is subject to dilation and contraction, episodes taking place over many years are wrapped up in a few seconds, while prosaic actions such a hand reaching for the switch are slowed down, the voice over too shuttles between past and present that flouts common sense, past, present, memory, presence coexist in spaces such as its life force and logic is derived from the subconscious, from that of a fevered vision, hypnotic as it is like being in someone else's dream
