Short story some of you might enjoy. I was a CH 47 Chinook Pilot in the military. On my third flight in the CH-47 I made a comment about how the helicopter is a slow brick in the sky not as agile as the little 58. My instructor pilot looked at me and said he has the controls. Next thing I know we’re at Treetop level at about 120 kn doing almost map of the earth along a river. One second I’m looking out my left window and seeing the ground and the next and looking at the stars. When it was done I thought I was going to have to pull the seat cushion out of my fifth point. Most of the time the Chinook is a slow flying workhorse. But in a moments notice that bird can really move.

At the very least a helicopter is much safer than a plane because a helicopter would slowly stall meanwhile on a plane you are either gliding down so fast or going down straight like a meteor either way it would spell crash all the time and with a helicopter you got huge gaps to actually escape when it sinks a plane only has tiny portholes that won't even open and the doors are too far

Helicopters and planes are some of the safest vehicles on the planet not only because of the rigorous training involved to fly one but also because of the copious amounts of maintenance involved.

Wife and I took a helicopter tour of Kauai about 8-10 years ago. Was an awesome, beautiful trip. They even hovered down inside a small volcanic crater above the Na Pali coast. It was raining and we were told it pretty much always rains way up there.
Definitely a fun experience I went to an air show when I was younger and my dad paid for a helicopter ride for me and the 2nd time I rode in a helicopter was when was in a motorcycle accident and had to be airlifted to the hospital I remember just floating sure would love to get a chance to go Again in this life time

Great video, thank you! I flew as a passenger once. It was a short sigthseeing flight over the plains in summertime, including nice views on windmill farms. The pilot was very experienced and everything went very smooth - no turbulence at all. And this feeling of levitation. Helicopters are awesome!

I have been working on helicopters for a long time. I fly on maintenance flights very often. I love the machines. The do things airplanes can’t.
They must be respected by everyone involved with them.
Most of the crashes I know of were during training.

Autorotation is a procedure the pilot performs rather than a system. The pilot lowers the collective, which reduces the angle of attack, and increases rotor rpms. When the rpms are high enough, the pilot pulls up on the collective and creats lift and slowing the rate of decent. Depending on altitude, this will be done 2 or 3 times before reaching the ground. I was a helicopter crewchief in the army and have been in them many times doing autos.
As a UK Mountain Rescue Search & Rescue dog handler, many years ago, the dog and I took part in a training exercise to familiarise us both to being in the chopper and being winched to the ground. What a fantastic experience for us both. Always, after that, my dog would immediately perk up whenever she heard a chopper, even on the TV!

I remember not thinking much of it as i got on a helicopter for the first time it was until my cousin asked the pilot how he got a big scar across his face to which he replied helicopter crash. It was in that monent I realized we were heading straight into a mountain before he pulled up last second and proceeded to show off crazy maneuvers boy i tell you that’s about as close as ive ever been to crapping my pants 😂
I was blessed to obtain my PP license during college, and then my dad, having his own construction company, gained access to sell and represent McCullough Gyrocopters. It was the only FAA certified gyro at that time. At their expense, I was able to travel to their factory in Lake Havasu, AZ, and get certified to fly the gyrocopter. I had an old Vietnam pilot training me, and we would chase the wild donkeys that roamed the desert outside of Lake Havasu. BTW, McCullough was the chainsaw guy that bought the barren land where Lake Havasu is located, and paid for and built the main structure [roads, water, sewer, buildings, etc] of the city known today. He also bought the London Bridge and moved it there and re-built it over the Colorado River, We did a complete loop in this bird, and this technique had not been done before. We took a long cross country to another state, landed in a field, hopped a ferry across the river to a casino, had lunch and gambled, all on one trip. This was in the early 1970's. Lots of fun flying the J-2 Gyrocopter. We even sold a few.

I travelled the length & breadth of South Vietnan on a daily basis, flying in both the Huey & the Chinook, & C130's & C123's, once in a South Vietnamese Douglas DC3, entertaining the troops.
From Mountain Top Fire Bases to the Delta regions, to close to the DMZ, and anywhere we were welcome.
But the most spectacular flight was with 'The 1st. Cav' air wing, these blokes were complete with Handle Bar Moustache's & Yellow Cravats & Ist. Cavalry Hats, right out of th 1850;s ...
we flew in Bell UH-1 Iroquois at tree top height for the entire 45-minute journey for fear of Snipers!

Crash simulation definitely seem more tense that what we go through for off-shore rigs. We were taught hand placements before impact. So when we're flipped upside down. Our hand closest to the door would guide us out. Nothing like doing it at night,storms & salt waters.
Helicopter and other aircrafts are the safeties mode of transportation. Everyday there are huge number of cars and motorcycles that are involved in any accident while helicopter and other aircrafts only have few accidents ANNUALLY.

The autoration "system" 🤣
It's not a system you can just engage, the lever on the pilots' left side by his/her leg is called the collective because it collectively changes the pitch of all of the rotor blades. In order to enter an autorotation you have to lower the collective so that the pitch of the blades allows air to flow up through the rotors and keep them spinning, which allows you to basically glide to a safe landing spot. When you lose engine power in normal flight the rotor blades will begin to slow down because they are pitched up, if they slow down too much then you absolutely will sink like a rock and changing the pitch of the blades will not help. So pilots have to act quickly when the engine fails, especially in lightweight helicopters like the R-22 where you only have a few seconds to lower that collective before it's unrecoverable. I'm a student pilot, practicing autorotations is one of my favorite maneuvers to practice! Although you actually are gliding it still feels like you're coming down at a very fast pace so there's a bit of a pucker factor involved, and I'm a bit of an adrenaline junky so there's that. But it's also challenging because there's so many things you have to do all in a short amount of time; enter autorotation, scan for a safe landing area, navigate to that area and scan for power lines or other hazards, monitor rotor RPM's and airspeed throughout the entire maneuver, make a mayday radio call which may involve speaking to ATC or other pilots while you're doing all of these other things. It's a multitasking nightmare and I love it! 🤣

@Xplained you are not correct with the automated helicopter landing system. It was developed for the Japanese military not the Chinese. Mitsubishi is a Japanese company. You might want to do more in depth research with reputable aerospace and defense sites, rather than Wikipedia or some other online platform that does not have verified experts.

I only travelled in a helicopter once; I was given no choice but never again. I have attended far more fixed wing than rotary wing crashes virtually all fatal but that ride was something else.

Flew many hundreds of miles and many hours by helicopter in Alaska. Only a few problems. I also got some flying time in the left seat in three different types.
As a young teenager me and my sister went for a paid 15 minute helicopter ride back in the 80's where I got to sit next to the pilot and we even did a small set of g turns and free falls. I really enjoyed it...

I flew in a Bell 425 once. It was kind of scary at first, but after a few minutes I relaxed & it was an enjoyable ride! But mostly I worked on the avionics of them.

9.84 deaths per 100,000 thousand hours is still nothing compared to cars.
I was trained in Army Aviation is 1966 and completed two tours in Vietnam, accruing 1,955 combat flight hours. There were five (5) events during my time there (due to combat) requiring autorotation and all 5 were successful. Why? Because we were trained by helicopter pilots who had completed their combat tours in Vietnam. We were taught EVERY CONCEIVABLE way to autorotate TO THE GROUND (except upside down!). And don't start with "Redbull" helicopters - they are specially engineered for the aerobatics they do and are NOT indicative of the ability of common rotary wing aircraft. The BIGGEST problem with today's training? Virtually NO helicopter pilot today is trained to autorotate TO THE GROUND! They recover with power at about 100' or so. "Oh, we practice in simulators." Hey - big hint here - "Simulation" is NOT reality!" And again, don't start with that 'mulit-engine so we're good' song and dance. I've seen common shoulder-fired rocket propelled grenades (RPG) go right up the back of a Huey tail pipe and blow both the engine and transmission out! Today's "Threat" is lightyears more advanced than the rice paddy bad guys we faced. V22 Osprey, V280 Valor and S-97 Raider all look sharp and of course, have Shills all screaming about how good they are. BUT. All I see is nice, big, juicy TARGETS easy to hit when they ALL HAVE TO LAND! Speed? I want to see any one of them dance their way out of meeting a modern guided missile of any kind, much less radar-guided artillery (which I encountered myself)! Have any of you NOT watched the Ukrainians blow a number of Russian combat helicopters out of the air without breaking a sweat? I have. FOOD FOR THOUGHT for all of you out there believing the shills and so-called "invincibility" of new modern rotary wing aircraft! My 2¢

I was in the RAF and anyone who flew as crew had to go in the dunker! So I did the training. I was on the Chinooks for some time and discovered they can land on water! Rotors turning they can open the ramp and kick out a RIB zodiac out the back full of Marines! They literally FLOAT OUT

US Army, 1975 67N20, my first ride, I thought, this is what Ali Baba's magic carpet must feel like. Went up with a Warrant Officer from the Nam, used the rotor like a giant weed wacker the land in some pine trees, "Hover Hole" INCREDABLE. My first autorotation I remember swallowing repeatedly on the way down to keep my stomach intact only to have to pucker my butt cheeks to keep from shitting myself..

Helicopters are not a dangerous mode of transport, but the environments in which they operate are. Challenging, unforgiving, hostile, raw, & most times with little to no auxiliary support. When bad things happen, it usually requires a split second reaction & response. We don't have the luxury of going back for a cup of coffee, to give the situation a think.

He didn’t explain the emergency system well so I will. The pilot has the control to told the blades of the rotors in either direction. I’m the event that the engine stalls and the chopper starts falling out of the sky the blade are flipped right before the chopper hits the ground since the force of the chopper falling has spun the blades on the opposite direction and give them a lot of speed it’s enough power just before the chopper hits the ground to flip the blades therefore changing the direction of air the rotor is pushing it.
