Mercedes C Class W204 Squeaky Steering Wheel FIX

  • A common but really minor design flaw from the pre-facelift W204 C Classes was the steering wheel creak/grinding noise. Some people replaced their whole steering rack for thousands of dollars, without realising it was actually just a misalignment of the driver's dash underside panel. Here you can see how to fix it.

This was very useful in pointing me to the right location but I didn’t have to remove anything. The lower section of the plastic trim has a tab that pokes into the carpet. I pulled this free by hand, which was easy, and I tucked a 2” section of foam behind the trim, where it pressed against the rubber boot of the steering column, problem solved without the use of any tools! Just a torch and a small section of foam. Many thanks for the video 10/10.

Hi. So just wanted to give my experience on this. I just went under and removed the plastic panel. I did not remove the panel/trim on the right (I'm not certain why that was needed in the first place so I left it on) I was able to remove the plastic trim under the steering wheel colum above the foot brake without any major issues. It was a bit of an awkward location but I got all 3 screws out and the 4th one holding the bonet lever in place. lowering the trim, I found on the far left of the this plastic trim panel there is a small cable connecting to the trim, becareful not to damage this when lowering the panel/trim as there was not a lot of wiggle room at least for my car anyway. Unplugged this and I moved to the right , I decided to not remove any other cables/plugs because it didn't seem like it was really needed. The main reason was, when I lowered the trim, my trim was covered in dust and there was no sign of any rubbing onto the panel itself so I did not feel there was any point in removing the panel any further.
Instead, I did decide to spray a small amount of WD40 onto a rubber boot that is just above the foot brake as I cannot see anything else that could be rubbing... so far, this has stopped the noise but I need to do mroe testing.

Hi, friend. Thanks for the neat video. I have an issue with a knocking sound coming from my w204 (same model as yours) every time I turn the steering wheel. It's really irritating. What could this be? Thanks in advance for any help

If it's not the same issue as mine, I'd suggest it's something mechanical in the suspension. Check for wear in any components or play in the wheels.

I'm actually not sure to be honest - I'd have thought that if it was a common issue, it'll have been updated and fixed for facelift models.

I actually just put some oil on there to see if it'd make a difference, which it did, but it returned a few thousand Kms later. The second time around i actually sanded back the contact patch.
